  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Its official - Black Magic 4k Cinema Camera

I think users who want the latest new tech will be all over a 4K BMCC pre-order. Me I still can't shake the frustration they put so many through for V 1.0. I just got an email from Abel Cine Tech saying my camera finally came in...7 months late. And I'm one of the lucky ones to even get it. How quickly they forget.

This is a too familiar feeling. This time I'll wait it out shooting with my R1MX, and its lovely ability to overcrank. Maybe next year when they start delivering. Nice specs though.

yeah, 'once bitten twice shy' when it comes to BMD, after that awful wait. I'm just glad the fates landed me with Red :-)

There are some smart folks over at BlackMagic and I fully expect them to implement an OLPF at some point, or perhaps attempt to use some kind of processing to achieve the same goal. My limited physics understanding leads me to believe that when particular frequencies are attenuated optically prior to bayer reconstruction you end up with minimal loss of genuine high frequency detail in exchange for dramatically less aliasing/moire (different equations but similar causality).

IAC, all due respect to the BM crew, but all those times Jim noted how insanely difficult a lot of the RED program was to execute - I don't think that's smoke. It might be trivial in 10 years, but at the moment, it's still a serious bit of engineering to make a proper digital cinema camera - especially when your total cost of content has to be low enough to enable a $4,000 price point. Best part, is that like Jim and the RedTeam, Grant and his peeps can shut up all the doubters by delivering a great camera. Until then...

Cheers - #19

Ah, I see. That would make much more sense.

Psh.

Anway Red hasn't taken full payment for the Dragon sensor and kept it for the best part of a year now (true for many still). That didn't happen with Scarlet either.

Check out the comments over at bmcuser.com. The bitterness is nothing like I have ever seen on Reduser.

I gave up waiting on my BMCC, and opted for the Scarlet, best thing i ever did. Even i had opted to stay with BMCC, i still wouldnt have received it yet here in the UK.

A.

I was more thinking about Epic and RedRay. Remember the 2009 release date? Then 2010? How long Stage 2 owners had deposits down? I'm not meaning to bash Red - just thinking that the less-than-a-year holdup from BMD isn't the unprecedented disaster people make it out to be.

And yeah, I've seen the comments. You'll notice I've been very active in that thread.

A deposit is another deal (in fairness, not all distributors took deposits)

So When is RED is suing Black Magic for compressed 4K super 35mm global shutter camera?

LOL.

Where does this leave Red lawsuit at F5, F55 and F65?

It's all good. Consumers win. Black Magic are attempting to do to Red what Red did to Sony and Arri. This will be a bit uncomfortable for Red as now they understand how the established players felt with Epic. It will be hard for Red to respond to this threat -and it is a threat- without sounding like Sony and Arri. The more things change.....heh.

Whether the typical Reduser buys or hates on this Black Magic 4K camera simply does not matter. The opinions of many established cinematographers could not keep Red down and stop them from re-shaping the market, and all the opinions expressed by us here won't stop Black Magic from doing the same.

This is a game changer in true sense of the phrase. As much as Red's Epic once was. I love progress.

The only game changer is that now people no longer need a story.
It suffices to simply spend all of one's time promoting new equipment with fluff pieces to have an established professional reputation.

Well said, and Jim has broken this to us ahead of time: that everything gets better and cheaper and you have to look to yourself for value, not your gear. This is a race to the bottom in which the bottom means a level playing field.

The BMD pocket camera looks cheap at first... But consider GoPro. They may still have an ace up their sleeve. 4K for $4K is cool. Hope they've got their sensor supplier issues sorted.

As for BMD's "quality control issues", I'm not sure they can be referred to in that way. If they had shipped the cameras with the dud sensors, then that would have been a QC issue. What it is is a supplier issue - and an embarrassment. Of course, if you're Apple, then you ship the broken tech, deny it's broken and then ship an "updated" model with a fix for the problem that didn't exist with the previous model and ask everyone to pay full price for it.
