  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Its official - Black Magic 4k Cinema Camera

I don't RED think will announce a global shutter just by inferring from Jarred's post here:

Global Shutter creates foundational problems in other aspects of sensor design.... as much as everyone thinks they want a global shutter they really just want the side-effects. We took things to a whole different level.

Sony F5 maybe in trouble..... F55 another matter.

Canon dead in the water ( for new product) .

Arri let's see what they have to say ..... I'm imagining some new software presents in the pipeline from Red. (outside of dragon)

P.S. heres hoping "Global shutter" hasn't become the latest marketing term like HD a few years back......was HVX ever HD?

Les

I think you are on to something here.

Dragon could appear on the Epic for maybe the low $20's and maybe Scarlet gets updated specs, like 5k at speed?

I agree, both Sony and Canon must be freaking right about now.

Great times.

All I want is the red laser pJ

To be fair, it's not an announcement, and I said "something like that" so it many be a kind of workaround, but the inference is about a solution to rolling shutter.

Check out programs like PFTrack and The Foundry's "Rolling Shutter" for bespoke methods. It's trivial now.

Yeah, but these work a lot better for pans than they do for hand held jello.

This announcement is the real "game changer" for me, can't wait to see what red will respond to that..
Just a little question, do you think prices of the red one mx market will drop? (i want to buy one in next month, that's why i'm asking)
Thanks for your replies all, and have a great day!

I would hope so. a lot depends on when these cams actually start to ship.

BlackMagic Production Camera:

Super 35 sensor, Global Shutter, Ultra HD and 4K support, Built In SSD recorder, Touch LCD metadata entry, Compressed Cinema DNG RAW and ProRes recording, Thunderbolt and EF lens compatibility,

AND It will also include FREE DaVinci Resolve and UltraScope.

Now what you think the prices of the red one mx market will be?

Mate,

This camera, is gonna be used as an A cam on many feature film sets. Mark my words.

Ivan
Define feature film set? I agree that it could end up on indie feature films and perhaps on a major if someone really falls in love with it but from my experience DPs are less concerned about price point and more concerned about IQ, integration with production gear they are used to, and service/support from the rental house if/when things go wrong. At least on the majors. There is still a large contingent that are not happy about the departure of film. Alexa and RED Epic have helped some of them feel comfortable with digital. To me, the BMCCs are aimed at the indie filmmaker, and in the case of this 4K camera, we don't know a whole lot yet other than some initial specs.

Until it's out there in wide use, we won't really know what to make of this camera or any others that may be announced.

Only trouble with BMD is they need to stop announcing new products and ship backordered products first (lol)

@ Troy, i agree, it depends on when they'll start to ship these cameras, but my guess is that e don't have to be worried..
Shipping of the ef version took a long time certainly because of the fact that they were working on these two new models.. So, i'm not worried..

@ Kwan Khan, Ahaha! Yes, when you see all these specifications, my question seems to be stupid.. Prices of the red one mx will fall for sure..

I think they had some manufacturing issues which they solved now. They will probably / hopefully offer a trade-in option, so that you can change your order from a BMCC 2.k to a BMCC 4k.

Prices of the red one mx will fall for sure..

I wonder how much further the prices of a Red One MX can actually fall? I doubt the BMC 4K will do 120FPS. After all of the BT Red One's sold for $4000, heaps are back online as packages for $8-10,000. Much less than $4000 for a Red One and why bother selling it? Sure, on paper compared to a new BMC4K at $3995 it should be cheaper, it is a few years old and second hand, but it is still a $25,000 camera that was used to photograph The Social Network and win Oscars. Just because cheaper alternatives are coming, I don't see many people letting go of their Red One's for much less than $4000. And how many will there be on the market? Red has sold all of the stock they had, a lot of people have said they're sticking with theirs - there is a very finite supply.

I could be wrong, but I think there will still be some things that the Red One does that the new BMC4K doesn't, and I don't see the price falling much lower than it already has.
