  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

It this normal? 50fps/50fps on scarlet mx playbacks 200%speed!

Hello , thanks everyone for the help im receiving!

Yes, if you put in 25 fps timeline it playbacks in "real speed" but , again, we wanted 50 frames per second but played in "real speed" no varispeed at x2 speed because the vfx need it to apply fluent fake vfx movements to objects in composition and playbacked smoothly . The problem is that we wanted 50 frames per second at normal speed not 25 normal speed so we recorded 50/50 fps, is it something wrong with the settings then ?

Thanks.

Lluís.

Same problem we have with my Epic-W. We could not solve it. It is weird! Playback in camera is oké! I have to make a new test because i'm going to shoot a whole feature film end July on this speed 50/50.

Simply to play back in 50fps if thats what you want. Then you need to have a 50fps timeline. But normal procedure for having sub frames for VFX is to shot (in this case) 50fps at 25fps time base. Then in offline edit you simply speed all those clips with 200% later when the VFX guys do their stuff, they will conform your edit and then have the additional sub frames handy where needed. Simply you dont have to have a special mixed frame rate timeline or such. Simply edit in 25fps and give them the EDL/XML or edit in 25 and when done stretch export your committed edit with 200% speed baked in and then also export one where all those clips are stretched out.

Simply I think the 50fps time base thing is not doing you or the VFX guys any good. just edit like normal and let them lure out those frames out of the source files.

Ok but wouldn't be 50fps/50fps project setting incamera doing exactly the same thing but without all that postproduction procedure? Recorded 50 frames per second playback at 50 frames per second means it has to be playback at normal speed because its 1:1 ratio. (Not talking about timeline settings only talking about playing it back on camera wich takes the information to playback the clips from the project timebase.

Could it be that mixing project timebases in a same media or something like that could be the mess?

Im not sure what your mess is. As if I bring that clip into flame it plays back in real time. i.e. 50fps. So something is up with your premiere, FCP or what ever you are using.

And just to explain premiere can not have one timeline with clips shot at different fps. So basically all your clips will be played back with the same frame rate in an edit. If it´s not possible to set your NLE to 50fps then is something wrong with it / the settings. The r3d is just fine 50/50p.

Why does fcp and premiere playback in double speed? I have the same problem. We have a hole show to show in 50/50 out of fcp X Is the metadata from my Epic-W not good to read for fcp and premiere and davinci?? So we need flame.... Can you test next to flame in other edit programs Bjorn?

50/50 in camera is exactly the same as 25/25 in camera.

I understand, what i don't understand in a time line of 50p it play twice the speed instaid of normal speed;)

Here's one other thing to look at. Take a look at the time code. There is a mode on Red cameras that allows you to use a 24 (or in your case, 25) frame time code in a 48 (in your case 50)frame project. In this mode, each frame of the time code is on 2 frames of the picture. The first frame with any given time code has a "." preceding the frame number and the second has a ":". This was done to allow shooting of a 24 frame picture at 48 fps, but with the ability to edit at 24fps and finish at either 24 or 48. There have been a few projects that needed this, primarily the "HFR" pictures like the Hobbit movies, but others have taken advantage of it. Your description sounds like the programs in question are playing the "field 1" frames only - in other words, one frame for each time code frame. This has the end result of playing the 48 frame clip at "double speed."

Very interesting, could you give me a little bit more details on how to change that on RedCineX or other software? Thank you very much.

Lluís.

THis is it.

I just checked the clip and the same TC appears across two frames. So the NLE's are reading one frame of the timecode and not recognizing the number of frames in the sequence. I doubt you can change this in RCX, but you can probably modify how the NLE reads the TC information or the actual FRAMES.

Maybe there is a setting in those NLE's to have it read actual frames over TC, because in this case (at least on the clip provided by the OP) the frames are there and the TC repeats. RED player plays the clip back at the correct speed.

Maybe have a read through this.
