  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Isn't it time to have DSMC2 Forum with line of cameras discussion thread group?

I agree with Daniel, but maybe something more like this...

RED Digital Cinema:
- Recon
- NAB / Cine Gear Expo
- RED Discussion
- Crucial Ordinance

Sensor Discussion:
- Helium
- Dragon
- MX
- M

DSMC2 System:
- Raven
- Scarlet-W
- Epic-W
- Weapon

DSMC1 System:
- RED One
- Scarlet
- Epic
- Epic-M

+ RED Developer Discussion
+ Hydrogen Discussion
+ Lens / Gear Discussion
+ IPP2 Discussion

I really just want a dedicated place to talk about Helium and IPP2 mostly, as all of this information seems scattered everywhere. :(

Tossing my hat into the bin. Hoping we can get more traction on this!
Honestly, I just want to talk about and find topics related to Helium, DSMC2, and of course IPP2.

Part of RU historical hook is the treasure hunt format whereby you have to spend hours to find clues to other clues with an assortment of opinions and guesses to triangulate a best guess at what you're looking for. . . which makes for a "sticky" website. Average user time spent on RU is measured in hours - not seconds. Hard to see RU management tinkering with that basic formula by changing to a hierarchy which provides quick, easy answers to question like shipping status, best practices or reoccurring technical questions

While Zeb indeed paints a bleak canvas of what REDuser is, I'll say that there is a bit of organization planned relatively shortly. It's just not ready yet.

So sorry for that "spoiler alert".

There is a lot of information on this site and with a general steady stream of new members who often are new shooters and/or users working on the latest or a generation or two or three back at this point. It's certainly piled on, but a few have worked hard at promoting some sense of important organization.

i.e. Everybody who visits REDuser should start with Recon and perhaps take a look at Crucial Ordinance.

Also, general advice to newer members, if there's a question on your mind it's always good to search first. Odds are somebody else has been in your shoes.

On the note of something good to digest, while Jarred is flying off to distant lands at the moment, his monthly Recon posts have been nice to chat about "where things are". I'd love to see that go down the first week of the month and he's been sort of on that schedule for a bit now.

So in short, stay tuned for whatever new catagories/topics/subtopics and simplification is coming.

Didn't mean to come off negative Phil. Treasure Hunts are good wholesome fun!!

Seriously, I could give a fuq about Raven upgrade path questions, slow Premiere Pro performance or other specific user issues since most don't relate to me. DMSC2, IPP2, Helium and their related best practices are of top interest to this country boy

Phil,

I apologize if this comes off as a bit pedantic, but what is your frame of reference for "relatively shortly"? As in, what is it relative to. To me, that would mean in a month or less, based on my own timeline for reference. However, I'm pretty sure the RU Mod Team is operating on their own timeline. I just don't know what that reference is, and it makes it tough to judge when I would/should expect to see the re-org come online. Hopefully that makes sense?

Guys,

It is not entirely up to mods and would involve (probably) a ton of work on the back end. Also, the site would have to be reindexed by google which could break a lot of existing links, etc.
As stated earlier, it's not as simple as reshuffling a few things around. The very best person to ask is Jason Ramsey as he would most likely be the one doing the heavy lifting and the re-arrange.

While Reduser wants to respond to everyone's needs and suggestions, some thought and planning does have to go into a change which on the surface seems simple but probably has more repercussions than you may think.

David

David,

I'm not questioning what you are saying (or any of the other mods), in regards to the amount of time, work, and effort needed. I'm simply trying to guage when a possible re-shuffle could come to RU. I don't know what "soon" is to you all, and would be ok with Jason Ramsey or any of the mods chiming in on a timeline.

Ok.

So I'll listen, but I don't quite understand what is being asked here.
Is it difficult to find topics?
Hard to understand where to post questions?
Too segregated?
Not segregated enough?

This is in line with a request I had a long time ago that went into oblivion with time.

First off, there are forum parts almost never used, high up on the list. The EPIC-M OWNERS hasn't been updated since February but it's still part of the top forum list. Then in the same place we have NAB2016... it's 2017 and Red has moved away form NAB. DRAGON WEAPON and RAVEN are listed as cameras, but Dragon is the sensor in both Weapon and Raven. Then in the camera section we just have Epic, Scarlet and... Red One. Under this we have probably the most active place, RED WORKFLOW which should probably be listed in the top instead... RED RAY... anyone using these? Post-Production HARDWARE should be placed right beside RED WORKFLOW. Bugs / Problems / Help! should be listed in the top section as well, since there are so many putting their help requests in the RED DISCUSSION or other camera forums instead. Also, the help-section never gets any attention, such requests always goes under other sections more in-line with the specific question.
The Shooting Red section is all fine and good, but I don't think Cinematography should be there (will explain later). In this place, change Lens Tests to just Lenses, since it's never just tests it's discussions about lenses overall. The section should also contain something about Grip gear. If it's about shooting Red, then include what's used when shooting Red: Lenses, Grip, Audio, Gimbals / Steady etc. Under Everything Else, just put all the sections that shouldn't be in the top under "Archive" just like with RED WORKFLOW it contains entire sections under it. Red User groups should have sub-sections per country... not a thread per country. This way, people can post threads under their country or group.

So... there are a lot of clean up that I think should be made and to add to that a section named "CREATIVE"

Here's my suggestion for a new list of forum sections.

Red Digital Cinema

- RECON (News)
- GEAR DISCUSSION (In depth threads about the gear)
- RED DISCUSSION
- CRUCIAL ORDNANCE
- RED WORKFLOW
- BUGS / PROBLEMS / HELP!

Sensors (sensor specific questions and discussions)
- MX
- DRAGON
- HELIUM
- MONSTRO VV

Camera specifics (System related questions and discussions)
- RED ONE (Original system discussions)
- EPIC/SCARLET (DSMC1 discussions)
- WEAPON (DSMC2 discussions)
- ACCESSORIES FOR DSMC (Mainly third party, since most discussions happen under GEAR in the top)
- POST-PRODUCTION HARDWARE (Hardware setup discussions for handling the workflow)
(Move REDLINK DEVELOPERS into RED WORKFLOW)
- HYDROGEN

Shooting Red
- LENSES (Old Lens tests section)
- GRIP (Everything grip related)
- AUDIO (Audio and Red)
- GIMBALS / STEADY (Gimbal discussions and how to stabilize)
- EFP / ENG and RED (not sure how popular this place is though)
- 3D and VR (Old 3D section)

Creativity & Business
- SHOT ON RED
- CINEMATOGRAPHY
- DIRECTING
- WRITING
- EDITING
- COMPOSING & AUDIO
- VFX
- PRODUCTION MISC

Marketplace
- RED STUFF
- 3rd Party Gear
- For Rent / For Hire (Delete Red Owners Rental Group, why is there two places for this?)

Everything else

- OFF TOPIC
- ARCHIVE (Move all old sections in here including: all old NAB threads, RED RAY, DSMC FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY (it's not active), Old camera threads etc. Basically everything that is just cluttering the forum.)
- REDUSER USER GROUPS (Have sub forums for each country or specific groups)
- COMPLAINT DEPARTMENT
- OTHER CAMERAS (Link) (Or have a real forum place for this so that discussions about other systems doesn't appear in weird places around the forum)
- UNBOXING

Delete or merge other sections that correspond to headlines above.

Yeah, it's not a Mod thing actually. Like we literally can't do the organizational stuff. Too much power. I'd get drunk one night and create topics about which Pajamas people like wearing after wrap.

More or less waiting on the tall man to return and likely one other thing. Tall man is off being tall in a different land at the moment.

Relatively soon.

Indeed! ;) I can give you a definitive answer on when my page will be up, though. Unfortunately, my first couple passes at doing my own coding haven't turned out results pleasing for me. Just add it to the list of things I can't do well.

HAH! That would be an epic forum category. +1 for drunk shenanigans

No worries, Phil! :)

I think the easy way is create the new structure without messing the existing - Let the old one as it be and put a deadline to existing threads to be locked, example , end of 2017, so that members starts new thread under the new category.

And also just move old active threads over to the new sections while older semi-active goes into an "archive" section. That's where future things like NAB threads or stuff like that goes as well when it's getting old. We still have a NAB2016 thread at the top for instance.

Yes, what Anthony said. That makes sense and is easy to understand. +1 for this

This is the way I see the forum titles division IMHO:

RED Digital Cinema:
-Recon
-NAB
-RED Discussion
-Crucial Ordinance

The DSMC system:
-RED One
-Scarlet
-Epic
-Epic-M owners

(New Title) The DSMC2 system:
-Raven
-Scarlet-W
-Epic-W
-Weapon
-Custom (Xenomorph, Bayhem)

(New Title) The Sensor
-M
-MX
-Dragon
-Helium

And then place REDLink Developers under accessories
And the rest seems good as it is.

Just a suggestion...

+1 on this...

But I still would like somewhere to talk about post production software and computer hardware stuff :)
