I really value being able to use an eyepiece for handheld shooting to frame and steady the camera against my eye particularly in bright daylight. Looking at the specs released from Jim it seems the only option for monitoring with a viewfinder is $3,200. Is this just for Epik, or has a cheaper EVF for the cheaper 2/3 scarlets been mentioned by the RED team? It seems too pricey when a full fixed kit is a similar price.

Why do these things need to be so expensive anyway, I understand they have a quality screen inside but isn't there a cheaper way to monitor with an eyepiece. Seems a lot when you can buy a huge LCD TV for the price!! Or I can buy Mp4 glasses for a few hundred dollars.

Is the option of a small hood attached to the LCD screen a viable option?

*This isn't a complaint cause RED is doing an amazing thing right now.

Good question, and unfortunately no. A high definition EVF is highly specialized item and it's produced in relatively low volume.

So although $3,200 seems high compared to an HD TV, compared to other professional EVF systems - which aren't as good - it's a steal.

( check out Panasonic AJ-CVF100G or Sony HDVF35W for price reference )

However, all the Scarlet and EPIC bodies provide an HD resolution HDMI output, so that gives you another monitoring option to explore -

There's these attachments they make for the 5D lcd's so you can use them as a viewfinder. I think that would be the cheapest option in combination with the RED 2.8" lcd.

Bingo. For the budget shooter, this is definitely the way to go. I'm sure lots of options like this will become available for the 2.8" LCD once they start shipping.

I think this is a great idea. I know you can put anything anywhere but if one wants to simulate a similar set up to say any DSLR - the view finder, judging by the TATTOO LCD picture it looks like you would be able to mount it on top of the brain or a module and swing it down and flip it around so that it would be flat against it. Obviously then the only question is does the image flip but that is probably a silly question.

There are a few devices like that one from Optitek out there. I think one that can fit the 2.8" DSMC LCD would be a big hit with the Scarlet crowd.

Any one know of a "flip LCD" solution? I tend to shoot from waist level a lot and something that'll help me avoid having to take a knee everytime when using a VDSLR would be nice.

Stuart, you are correct. I am testing Panasonic's AJ-CVF100G right now on my HDX900 and I am not seeing $8400 worth of viewfinder.
The RED finder looks great and an incredible value.
Is there a way to use the RED viewfinder on my camera?

That's exactly what Canon did for the XL2. It has a flip-up viewfinder mounted on a little LCD.

Is there a way to use the RED viewfinder on my (non RED) camera?

I am afraid not.

One of the reasons that we can offer RED EVFs at such a great price is that they are designed as an integrated part of the camera system.

i.e a lot of the drive electronics are in the RED camera body itself...
