IS REDUCATION WORKSHOP WORTHWHILE

Is there any alternative workshop in the East Coast.
What are best resources for self study / self train, apart from the Red 101 DVD and the Ultimate Guide book. I need to know the production as well as the post production workflow of the red one.

I am a fresher but want to avoid the cost for the workshop if possible.

Someone kindly suggest ASAP.

I have heard very good things about Reducation.

But if you don't want to spend anything, I would say your best bet is to volunteer on some Red shoots with experienced users. No substitute for on-the-job learning.

Ravi, there is so much to be learned at REDucation. It is a fully immersive "RED camp" with 50 hours of hands on training where you shoot 4 K and then evaluate your shots on full 4K projectors.

If you would like to see a sample of just how much there is to learn, our good friend Ted Schilowitz along with 3 others just held a webcast talking about some of the post workflow and gives you a feel for what REDucation is all about...

Here's the link to the webcast...

I, personally, will not be able to go to the REDucation due to scheduling and the fact I will be shooting videos from the NAB floors for the members here on REDUser and DVXUser to see what's going on in Vegas...

Thanks for the response Joseph.
I definitely agree with you that it will be a valuable experience but I was just wondering if only the Master Classes were included...maybe I will just go.

Are we permitted to video record the training, if possible please let me know the checklist to get the most of the workshop

Thanks
Ravi

No, video will not be permitted...most workshops forbid that. ;)

I attended the first session, and feel it was well worth the time and the money.

No recording but you get pretty exhaustive pdf's of the presentations.

Cheers,

Steve

Fxphd also has a great set of videos that kick total ass for RED!!

It's super informative and worth the money even if you go to reducation.

Ravi-
My name is Michael Cioni and I'm one of the lead instructors for the REDucation teaching series. I completely understand the cost of REDucation can be a factor in your attendance. However if I may add one thing to the others who have added their feedback:
The depth we go into at REDucation is going to have the fastest, positive impact on your work with RED - this goes for pros and amateurs alike. Taking the time to go on set and attend evening seminars or even webinars is definitely in my prescription for RED growth. However REDucation offers unmatched proximity to the RED company at its core through it's curriculum, teachers and TA's, plus it covers the entire process of RED, which is impossible to get working on set. We preach to everyone that it is as important to know the part of the process you don't do as it is the part of the process you do. That means post and production have less boundaries and understanding and experience of this "hand-shake" is critical in improving your footage, and ultimately your stock.
Taking the information we offer and "purchasing" it thorough a myriad of available options would not only take a very long time, but it would probably cost more than $2500 altogether.
Happy to answer questions if have any-easy and tough :-)

Ravi,
You dont learn what they teach anywhere else, unless you work with the best.
It is by far the best way to learn as much as you can about RED, its workflow, and what evolves around RED.
If it is a serious path for you then it is very hard to argue that you'll learn more anywhere else.
On sets left and right yes you can gain so much. But there are things they cover in this REDUCATION that you dont just learn on set or in post without significant experience or well trained professionals.

Its all relative to how involved with RED and its workflow you want to be. If you are extremely serious about it then yes its worth it to take it on.
If its a so/so thing for you or not too important, then im sure you can get by with trial and error, experimenting and crossing your fingers.

Hope that helps.
And i get nothing by saying this at all you should just know.
Its the best training you can get on the entire education of RED.

best of luck.

Nice to see all the good comments from those who have taken REDucation and the recommendations for others interesting in learning that REDucation is the go to place. We are constantly learning and evolving the teaching and hands on process ourselves, with the new M-X sensor, the new post tools in place, etc.

REDucation is sort of like summer camp for getting fully immersed in the RED world with limited distractions - For 5 days you live it hands on, and walk away with a solid working knowledge of Production and Post for the RED.

Sorry if this is obvious on the website somewhere but where I can find out details about when and where Reducation takes place during, cost and so on.

Many thanks

Hi Rob,

(and others that are curious and want to get more details on the program)

you go to: http://www.reducation.net/

(or you just google REDucation - it's the first link that comes up)

Hi Michael, thank you very much for taking out time to address my concern and I apologize for the delay to respond.
:iagree:
I completely understand that especially for an independent film maker it is imperative to have multiple skills and be self reliant in most aspects of film making.

You are the creators of the RED ONE phenomenon so it’s obvious that you have the most intimate knowledge about the camera and that you mean business in spreading that knowledge.

I was just hoping that the amount of info that would be pumped would not bounce off my head.

Ravi

100% True. . . I'm able to pay my rent because of Reducation & Michael Cioni. There's no better review than that. :)

Michael, what does REDucation mean to indie film makers.

James-
REDucation is one of the best resources for independent filmmakers to get acclimated to the world of file-based filmmaking. There are some great resources out there, but a unique thing that REDucation offers is the in-depth professional training from both a curriculum learning environment as well as hands-on teaching followed by detailed evaluation. One thing that I think independents benefit from at REDucation is our workflow curriculum. We teach a number of step-by-step workflow pipelines that include short and long form, indies and studios, tape and files, avid and final cut, high res and low res, conform and color correction. This is a highlight for a lot of attendees because it reveals such a wide array of information regarding potential uses of RED. Also, there is another section about "do it yourself" filmmaking. On this day, we go through dozens of tools out there, their purposes, and even their prices. We then evaluate and compare them against each other to create your ideal equipment "matrix" infrastructure.

Here is a quote from one of our students that was recently sent to me. Brian is a "do it yourself-er" and took this class to improve all his tools...which he has successfully done.

"The REDucators were able to walk the delicate line between brand advocacy and real world post-production necessities--and conveyed to us not just how things are supposed to work--but how they really work, and how to deal with it when things simply don't work at all. They provided a survey of all the techniques and workflows necessary to navigate the treacherous landscape of dealing with the new technologies now in filmmakers hands. I felt like a chimpanzee handling a hot nuke before my class--and left walking (more or less) upright, head buzzing with the possibilities and potentials. For anyone still dragging their knuckles through the tech, I'd highly recommend letting REDucation get you up off all fours"
-Brian Pope, REDucation Class III

Prerequisites for attending Reducation workshops?

Prerequisites for attending Reducation workshops?

Don't have any real hands-on experience with the RED but I'm considering investing in the REDucation workshops coming up in December here in L.A.

Can anyone let me know what's the most basic level of knowledge I'll need in order to get the most out of these courses? Thinking about attending 3 day workshop and the Post production extension.

Thanks in advance!
