Is RED upgrading EPIC-X yet?

But realistically if I'm not mistaken the 3K for 3K Scarlet was ready to shoot (bar media) where as the $9750 Scarlet was only the body, SSD and Canon mount, right? So his $14,000 isn't that far off to get it shooting.

Exactly... although $9750 just got you the brain (in 2011)... not the SSD ($1500) nor mount ($700). Plus you need the 5" touch screen ($1500).... and another $950 for the smallest 64gb Redmag and $250 for the reader. So actually more than $14k. In late 2012 the Scarlet brain dropped $2k in price.

They don't just announce - they quote dates and then proceed to get it wrong by many YEARS! How is that prowess?

There seems to be a fine line between enthusiastic fan and apologist.

I think most agree if RED could announce products WITHOUT dates and not raise impossible to meet expectations it could ONLY be a good thing.
Don't get hung up on details. The number of (RED) cameras sold in this market segment is unprecedented. And probably will not be matched for a long time. The fact that an individual did not get this or that accessory they felt they really had to have is completely irrelevant in the big picture. And understanding that very fact IS part of Reds marketing prowess...

Well, if are are going to criticize, you should get the facts right. They started taking orders for Scarlet in 2011 and it was $9750.

I know my facts are right. As I've already posted in this thread from Wikipedia:
The RED Scarlet program was announced on November 13, 2008 and upon announcement composed the less expensive half of the company's Digital Still Motion Camera program.[SUP][25][/SUP] The specifications that have been announced were a 3072x1620 pixel, 2/3 inch image sensor and an image processor capable of recording 120 frames per second in RED's proprietary format.[SUP][26][/SUP] It also included a non-removable 8× zoom lens [8× lens specifications: 28–224 mm (35 mm equivalent) T/2.4 throughout the zoom range] as well as a model which uses an interchangeable lens system. Prototypes of both models have been demonstrated publicly since 2009.[SUP][27][/SUP] When first announced the camera was expected to be sold in 2009 for $3,000.
At CES 2010, a self-contained 3K resolution [SUP]2[/SUP]⁄[SUB]3[/SUB] in sensor size Scarlet prototype with an attached lens was demonstrated. The camera was announced to be able to shoot up to 120 fps at 3K resolution.
At the NAB 2011 a working prototype with a fixed lens and electronic aperture control was shown. On November 3, 2011, the firm officially revealed the new system, with the same S35 Mysterium-X sensor and only minor changes in the housing as the Red Epic.

I lived through the long wait for Scarlet... First for the 2/3 $3k version that never happened and then for the DSMC Scarlet. The Scarlet is a great camera, but the wait was painfully long.

Sorry man, but you sound like the Red marketing boss. "Don't worry that we announced the Dragon in 2011 and most people in 2014 don't have them yet. Don't get hung up on (these small) details!" :)

No one here is disputing the absolute awesomeness of Red cameras. The discussion is about bad marketing hype and missed deadlines.

You talk about Red marketing prowess??? Have you only talked to red fanboys to gain that opinion? Most non-Red users have a negative opinion of Red's marketing. I defend Red cameras where ever I can. I cannot defend their marketing schedules.

Here we go again:
It doesn't matter what I sound(?) like:
Fact: Red sold more cameras than anyone else in the high end market.
Fact- all these delays had very little to no effect on their camera sales.
That's all I'm saying- simple facts.
Instead of worrying what I sound (?) like on the forum please just consider these facts...

How can you say that it is a fact that these delays have had very little impact on their camera sales? That's a subjective opinion... based on what?
Show me your sources for your 'facts'.

This is a fact: Red announced the Scarlet in 2008 and delivered it in late 2011/early 2012.
This is also a fact: Red announced the Dragon in 2011 and most people don't have it yet in March 2014. Only early adopters and Carbon purchasers have Dragons.

How can you say that it is a fact

Jacek, dont let facts get in the way of your defending REDs marketing record. Only a hard core fan could over look the very common perception, even here on REDUSER, that REDs weakest moments are in the marketing area.

Luckily for RED their hardware is great. For hardcore fans on reduser, REDS marketing record doesnt matter - for the bulk of people it does and it chips away at their opinion of the hardware.

And what do you call "the bulk"?
Do you own Red camera? Because you think these are the best cameras out there?
Does Michael own Red camera? for the same reasons?
Did the delays make you change your mind about purchasing?
Answer these questions and tell me Red does not border on marketing genius ;)

Clearly their "genius" has easily won you over.

Not to sound like I am going against the grain...but this thread is a bit trivial. There is no amount of complaining or praise that will make the process go any faster or slower. Best thing to do is put it out of your mind either way and when the dinner is done cooking...the chefs will call. At that point you are either hungry, or not. Some have already eaten some snacks and don't need a meal, and others are starving. In the end, hopefully we will all be fat and happy. Some ate at the neighbors house and others got to enjoy moms home cook'n.

Okay...I think I need to eat breakfast before I start posting. Sorry.

LOL

Eloquently put!

Me , You, Michael and about 10,000 others.
In a market that can absorb maybe 20-25,000
How owning half of the market is not a great marketing achievement? It boggles my mind that you guys can't see that.. Or, maybe, that's another marketing genius marker ;)
And BTW Michael J is spot on- bitching and whining will not change a thing in scheduling. They are going as fast as they can- they have no reason not to....
