  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is now a good time to buy the Scarlet?

There won't be any new camera from RED and I doubt that any other manufacturer will unveil a product that will be able to compete with Scarlet.

If you're thinking in terms of Dragon/non Dragon, the new sensor will first be installed only as an upgrade to existing cameras (my educated guess) and only after everyone is upgraded Scarlet with Dragon will hit the store.

So if I were in your shoes I'd pull the trigger now.

some may also feel that adding a dragon to Scarlet may not suite them for what they need. Like if your doing personal projects, is there a need beyond 4k. Will may need bigger cards, more horsepower, how long will batteries last etc. There will be a lot to insider when the upgrade program come out.

Check the Sony booth @ NAB.

To see what there exactly? FS700? That's not a Scarlet competitor by my standards.

Until there is a camera that records 4K RAW internally for 15K there is no competition for Scarlet.

Although I'm all for a good fight between companies, it pushes the progress, but so far neither Canon nor Sony showed that they have the balls to stop playing marketing games and begin to produce kick ass products.

Buy with peace Al. This is RED land. Your camera is upgradeable. :yesnod:

My scarlet is worth more and has gotten better since purchase. This makes me a very happy customer.

Even once a company actually matches and outdoes specs and performance of the Scarlet. Until that camera is also upgradeable, there is truly no competitor. Though the frame rates on the new sony do have me pining a little.

I know I know. Gateway drug...

Best guess is that all announcements from Red at NAB will be for accessories, or possibly display methods (we haven't heard anything official about RedRay in a while) or upgrades. Since the price just went up in January I highly doubt there will be any sort of discounts or markdowns come NAB.

So, the only reason to hold off now rather than get it is to see what other camera companies are coming out with. If you are already certain you want a Red, go ahead and buy. You may want to hold out on fully kitting it out, though, until after all the new accessory reveals (both Red and 3rd party) come NAB.

Of course, if there is any doubt in your mind, all indicators point to Red being out of backorder on pretty much everything very, very soon. Meaning if you do wait the extra 2 weeks to order, you will get your Red gear shortly thereafter.

Nick, what is the estimated wait time if ordering today, any ideas? Everything in my cart currently says "In Stock".

Cheers!

Anything in stock can be in your hands within 5-10 days of Red verifying your payment.

I think it remains to be seen how "upgradeable" or "future proof" my Scarlet will be. Don't get me wrong, I'd love my camera to be upgradeable for decades but I'd be stupid not to understand that marketing terms are most useful for marketing. Time will tell.

If the Dragon is announced at NAB, they have to replace more chips in the Scarlet than the Epic to get it to work, so consider the cost of buying a new Scarlet/Dragon vs buying an additional upgrade.

Kind of depends on the Dragon's features and if you need them?

Unconfirmed rumors would point to better light sensitivity and possibly improved rolling shutter values (Scarlet is 14ms, which is comparable to a budget CMOS camcorder doing 30i).

As for light sensitivity, not so sure it's that bad now. This article talks about using the Epic for a TV show and being particularly pleased with the low-light capability.

As to the FS700, it's got some neat features, but it's not 4K recording 'today' - and won't be for some time.

Of course, if you really want to record 24p at 4K, get an Epic, as you have to record at 5K to get true 4K due to the bayer pattern of CMOS (multiply the pixels * .8 to get the true resolution).

Les, are you saying that if Dragon is announced it will be available in the Scarlet for the same price?

I don't know if that is what Les was saying, but the answer to the larger question appears to be No. Red has made it fairly clear that a Scarlet to Dragon upgrade will come with specs and a price tag that will bring it to parity with Epic. Expect your all in cost to =$34,500 + whatever Dragon for Epic costs...

So $24,800+Epic Dragon upgrade cost? Maybe close to $30K?

I think the FS700 looks great, but it's not a competitor to the Scarlet. For one thing, take a look at what Sony's external recorders cost now, then consider how much for the 4k "add-on" plus external recorder. I would bet you are at least in epic territory if not Alexa territory by the time all is said and done. However, for shooting 1080p with a great sensor and kickass frame rates, the FS700 looks like a great replacement for my AF100.

owning an Epic doesn't make you a better film maker than anyone else. They spent all of that money and if they can't afford the upgrade and you can bet their camera will be on the out dated list like everyone else. Who knows they may say epic's make a great crash camera. it's not what you spend it's how you use it.

Get your scarlet brother or stay in the world of consumer cameras that claim to be like the world changers.
