  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is Fincher shooting 'Gone Girl' on Dragon?

Boop. A little write up on Gone Girl with a cover shot by Fincher (don't know what it was shot on).

No, I don't know either.

But I can sure guess

Really cant wait for this one! Fincher and Cronenweth make REDs shine cant imagine how they're pushing dragon. Wonder how they're dealing with motion mounts and shooting wide open?

Don't know if they are using Motion Mounts on the production, but what I do know is they are shooting essentially entirely at ISO 800 at 6K 2:1 with a 5:1 REDCODE RAW ratio. You can see the frame guide that they will extract the 2.40:1 material out of.

They are shooting exclusively with the Leica Summilux-C lenses and likely a lot of wide open. I've spied a couple of two camera setups while snooping around one day, which Fincher enjoys doing for dialogue continuity if you've seen how he's shot his last couple of films. Don't know if they have any 3 or more camera setups, but I'm sure they'd do it if there was a reason for it.

You can see in the photographs that the 9.0" LCD Touch is preferred on camera most of the time.

I heard from a good source Fincher specs the way the camera trucks are laid out, down to the drawer. And the wilder report is that there's an outright BAN on wearing the color red on set.

Gotta love OCD.

Can I up the ante?
Dragons with RED Motion Mounts and "Meizler Modules". So much more in the way of groundbreaking techniques as well.
I have probably said too much. Have I mentioned how beautiful the Midwest is this time of year?

Great info Phill, this is why I mentioned motion mounts. I know they've been framing for the center extraction since social network but man, framing like that in 6K takes it to a whole new level.

also interesting choice going with the leicas as he seems to have a thing for master primes. Cant wait to see how the dragon and leica combo looks

I don't trust an AC if the first thing he does when shooting wireless is pulling from a monitor. I don't mind them doing so, but only if I know the have the skill and prefer to not go by monitor / most times they're pulling off monitor is when they don't have a clear line between them and camera

It's also annoying (sometimes) if it's your monitor and you have an AC who doesn't seem to realize it's not his LOL

At least on HOC, the pulling off of monitors thing was finches idea, and a lot of AC's I know were not in love with it. As an operator, I didn't like having my 1st so far away. I am used to having my 1st right there and being able to tell them
That they are a touch deep or shallow, or to tell them that I am going to go to something else. Although on that show, they are very very anal about camera movement, and it's pretty much set up before hand. Definitely takes some getting used to. From what I have heard from people who have worked with Fincher on other projects, the aesthetic on Hoc doesn't nessecarily carry over to different projects.

Can't stand WFO on MP's or Leica's. Ugh. Ruins your day when you just can't stick it like usual. 1.3 will break down a grown man on tough shots.

Can't wait to see the final product. So looks like a 2.40 extract judging by those framing guides? Interesting to see which directors don't mind all the extra screen gak (scopes, settings, etc) and which do.
