  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Introducing the Panavision DXL

Hats off to RED for collaborating with Panavision. Great alliance. Can't wait to see all the films and series made with both the Panavised RED as well as the 8K Weapon when it debuts.

It's interesting to compare and contrast the Xenomorph Red Weapon vs. the Panavised Red Weapon:

Is it possible to get the color science for us with "regular" reds? ;)

Sure hope so... Lots of former RED hating ASC guys were commenting on how beautiful the color was and that is was far from the "RED look." Could turn a new chapter for RED to adopt the LI color in camera to please everyone and get us beautiful images straight from camera. Some even mentioned the highlight rolloff was more beautiful and soft. Is that a color science thing?

Panavision is more traditional and classy looking. The Xenomorph went for the badass factor. To each his own but the Panny version is sexy..

Honestly, and this is all conjecture on my side, I have a feeling that the LI color science is not that different from the latest Dragon color. It's more an excuse to allow themselves to like RED now (the DP's that used to dislike RED out of misinformation), since it's a "whole new color science".

DLX will have a brand new custom made by Panavision OLPF and custom IR filter. That means, that the whole optical path will be different from standard Weapon, so LI color science will not apply to the standard Weapon or Dragon cameras.

People have actually be permanently banned from RU for implying that there's a "RED look"... As for the softer roll-off, I'd think that'd be more of a LI gamma thing or custom OLPF thing.

In any case, I'd love to be able to apply the LI colour/LI gamma to pre-existing .r3d footage.

Haha, yeah this too; ironically that just makes the partnership with panavision that much more of a master stroke by RED... Conversely, to be fair, I do think Cioni, Ian, and the LI gang, have a maybe-not-mathematically-correct-but-visually-better factor going in their favour... For example, theoretically the ALEV isn't better than Dragon (or even MX), but practically it certainly has advantages... Know what I mean?

Where did you read/hear this? Or are you making an assum--err, "educated guess"?

Does the PV DXL accept RED branded mini-mags?!

This is in their video's how they say they will optimize the olpf to the glass, also they explain how they can tighten up some stuff on skin tones for specific looks that are needed for a film. This makes a lot of sense to me for films that have a daily burn rate that is more then the cost of my entire indie film production: the lens & camera package is like the fuel pump to a billion dollar rocket so it has to be perfectly lined up.

Those who called RED vaporware back in 2006 should feel ashamed now.

Why? Becuse they made a camera that 1% of the users here will actually use in a production?
Also, Let's not forget, "4k for $4k" was vaporware.

Probably. I've encountered this numerous times with people who dismiss Red and are pretty vocal about it. Then you show them some Dragon material or even old MX material, one time even regraded Red One material and they love it, praise it and then realize they just liked some Red material. I'm not so much into tricking people or making fun of them, but when I talk casual about a choice of camera with someone that I might want to rent out my camera to and they are vocally hating the brand because of nothing more than a lack of knowledge it's a pleasure seeing the look on their faces when you drop the mic about some material being from a Red, especially if it's old MX material.

But I still think that a new color science has it's place. I'm not sure what relation there is between the OLPF and the color science in the Panavision. If it indeed has a new OLPF, then why not do a total package of it. Buy the LI OLPF and use the LI Color Science in post. It might be expensive as Panavision want's to be in on the cut, but at least it's then available for use.

If not that, I really hope that Red look at the LI color science and maybe improving their own a step further. As we wait for a totally new sensor, it would be a great evolutionary step to have an up to date color science for our Weapons.

No, actually, it was the other way around (the Genesis was developed and introduced first).

Unbeknownst to many (by beknownst to others) Panavision had an internal program to develop a large format digital camera for most of the last 4 or 5 years. The product was never completed, and ultimately some key development team members left. From what I see, this camera might be a reworking of that intended internal product (hence the packaging and optics) finally brought to market via a deal with Red to solve the sensor, recording, and workflow issues. If Michael Cioni is reading this, I'd love to have a talk with you at Cinegear. I'll make it quick... :001_smile:

Will certain be there at CineGear to answer all the questions, but more importantly, show off the camera modules, the glass, and the amazing pictures we're generating. We'll also be showing render speeds thanks to ColorFront at 40fps for HD dailies.

See you all tomorrow!

Where at the show are you going to be? Looking forward to seeing you, your team, and this remarkable camera!

i would bet not. Seems pretty clear they have done their best to keep the Red name off of their camera (and I get it... I mean it is their camera) and minimized the wording in all their media as to only mention that it uses a Sensor developed by Red. Like that's the only part they used Seems that an effort was made to only mention the sensor. So I'm betting there is some little code key that will only allow you to use their mags.
Hey I could be wrong. But kind of on the same note it was pretty difficult for a long time to use other CF cards on the Red 1.

Why not? But who would bother to rent a 3000$ cam/day and spare a few $ using Red branded mini-mags?
EVF connectors are RED-style, there is a lot more RED parts in there than only the sensor.

Honestly, proprietary media could almost be as simple as a new aluminum enclosure on the SSD that has a groove in it, with a peg inside the SSD slot that would prevent RED media from even being inserted. I don't think anyone would bother trying to modify expensive RED media just to cram it into the DXL. Cheap, requires no extra software, firmware, or coding, and they would already be making custom aluminum enclosures anyway to make the SSDs Panavision branded.

Any way you can answer some of the stuff in a way I can see it remotely? Like blog at the event or something? I'm intensely curious about it thx

Seems pretty odd to me, no "RED inside" marking anywhere....wonder what Jim thinks about this camera.
