  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Introducing the Panavision DXL

8K RAW with simultaneous 4K proxy (ProRes or DNx)
SSD (up to 1 hour on a single magazine)
.r3d (supported in RED SDK)

Does this mean that there is Uncompressed RAW onboard?

Congrats Michael and Red. I do recall a few conversations in which Michael predicted onset dailies could change very radically and rapidly in the future. This seems to be the first step in that evolution as the puck moves forward.

One reality check....

I love how all of the people hating on Red are suddenly professing this is the best camera ever... It's a fucking Red Weapon! The raw file is still exactly the same. Applying a LI "LUT" does not fundamentally change the characteristics of the Dragon sensor.

The Millennium DXL camera is partially the result of the steps taken with NHK's 8K broadcast version of the Weapon, Fincher's Xenomorph specs and Panavision's own check-list of desires. And it's a beauty for sure!

Congrats to all, and I for one am gladdened that more tentative cinematographers are going to be duped into the Red workflow unbeknownst to them due to some clever marketing. It only helps the Red cause, and that's a good thing.

My favorite Probst post ever?

Love to hear the Xenomorph truly does have some of its DNA in the DXL - seemed obvious to all, but nice to hear from someone close to the source!

Chris - hope your having a blast on Mindhunter!!

No, from what I've heard. Good interview here with Bill Bennett ASC... http://www.newsshooter.com/2016/06/...the-panavision-dxl-8k-camera-with-red-sensor/

So no interchangeable OLPF. I bet it's the STO used... anyone?

There are still a lot of speculations in that interview.

And the biggest question remains if light Iron does the debayer and apply their unique "color science" or do they apply their "color science" (what ever that means) after de debayering process is made from red's SDK like if it would be LUT?
In the interview (at 16'10'') they talk like if RED would need some help from Panavision to implement the "DXL color science" in other Weapons to match (f eg movi).
Now I think that LI role is also to tell DP's : "Hey guys, this is not RED's color science" "Ah! cool! let me try it then!"

Misinformation behold! The Genesis has nothing to do with the F900. The F900 was a 2/3" broadcast camera with 24p. The Genesis has a S35 sensor with more pixels than the Red MX sensor. It was fully built for cinema.

wasnt genesis the sony F35 re branded?

Looks great. Hats off to everyone involved.
Happy for Red. This was inevitable. Congrats guys and gals...

Looks like a huge step for RED, jumping into an even more collaborative partnership with another leader in the industry. Congrats to everyone involved!

Curious about the evf since the new dscm2 one is such a disaster.

Any news on which focus hand unit the lenses work with? Sounds like the mdr is built in. I would assume its not the wcu4...

No, actually, it was the other way around (the Genesis was developed and introduced first).

Unbeknownst to many (by beknownst to others) Panavision had an internal program to develop a large format digital camera for most of the last 4 or 5 years. The product was never completed, and ultimately some key development team members left. From what I see, this camera might be a reworking of that intended internal product (hence the packaging and optics) finally brought to market via a deal with Red to solve the sensor, recording, and workflow issues. If Michael Cioni is reading this, I'd love to have a talk with you at Cinegear. I'll make it quick... :001_smile:

(snip) As for light iron, the biggest 'complaint' you hear about red from those that don't understand RAW, is colour and skin tones etc. My guess is light iron have made the colour logs built in, so on set, you get the same look as film to appease the DoP's that don't know about RAW and prefer the 'look' of Alexa. Then you go back to post with the RAW....cheeky ;)

Unless Michael says different, this seems on point. If the on set experience is more in tune with how most DP's expect to see what they're getting on the day, with the full RAW data set still intact, the DXL ecosystem seems like an elegant solution.

In terms of the debate - it's a RED with a Panavision badge VS it's a Panavision camera with a RED sensor - IMO, it's both. I also hasten to add, that outside of RedUser, and some sharp DPs, the story of Panavision developing a proper camera that happens to source their sensor from RED is likely to generate far more enthusiasm. Just sayin'

yea man i want my 10k proprietary codec panavision. idk why they would kill it when it was practically a finished product? i guess they had to repurpose all the lenses somehow but i was literally freaking out since i heard so much about their now moth balled 65!? i just wish they would let me play with their prototype... i had really amped myself up about it... i was ready to quit my job and intern for them just to get my hands on it!

Congrats, this is big news and a game-changer for big budget Hollywood. Awesome "custom build", great additional features and overall formfactor. I like the direction you are going, opens new doors for RED and possibilities for all kind of productions.

But the RED WEAPON 8k will still be on #1 of my camera dream-list. ;)

I suggest you attend a Gearheads Anonymous meeting immediately, and every day after CineGear... ;-)

I have a serious gear lust problem. I run losses regularly... I'm still attempting to pay off 1 1/2 arris and a CF weapon and that's just from last year alone! I've finally had enough I'm buying solar bonds from now on and powerball tickets only
