  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Introducing the OConnor CFF-1

Looks cool, but how much play is in the gearbox?

That it the important question.

I need more money. Anyone have some they can spare?

I'm getting one of these as soon as I can afford it.

How much is the right side knob and other accessories? Are they available yet?
Can they be purchased together in a kit?

I will order now to get the 5% off from the $3400.

Thanks,

Norm

This looks amazing. I'd be interested to hear what if any play there is in the knob but the video sold me. I want one and knowing O'Connor products it will be worth every penny.
How long is Abels $3,400 price good for and what does that include?

Mitch,
Does it works with the above zooms Cooke 25-250 MK3 and the Angenieux Optimo 24-290 and 17-80?
Does it clamp with no problem to both 15 and 19 system?

Absolutely on all counts. There is a vast amount of clearance -- more than in any other design.

One of the clever features of the bridge is that it works for either 15mm studio or 19mm studio rods. For 15mm lightweight rods there is an optional substitute bridge. Simply slide out the studio bridge and replace it with the lightweight bridge.

Mitch,

Can it reverse so I can use it with ZFs? This looks perfect!

No reversing function built in, but you can use an aftermarket reversing gear such as the nice one Duclos makes.

If you go to our website page for the CFF-1 you will see a Related Product box on the right side of the screen. Click on the Follow Focus tab to get a drop down of some of the accessory items with pricing. Click on the Cases and Covers tab to get a drop down on the appropriate case (the CFF-1 hips in a foam insert designed to drop into a Storm case). Click on any drop down item to go to its Sales page for further information.

Anyone can always order off the website including international clients now, but if any client wishes to speak with me or a Sales Rep. you are certainly welcome to do so.

Norm, I'm working on your requests.

Does the second focus knob can serve as the right side knob?

That's the idea. Either knob can go on either side. There is also an extension available to push the knob out further from the camera which can be used on either side and can even be doubled up should one wish to do so.

How long is Abels $3,400 price good for and what does that include?

The introductory pricing is good through NAB, but I'm not certain how much longer afterward.

On our webpage there is an Item Includes tab where all the bits are listed:

# Main Bridge (C1241-1400)
# Swing Arm (C1241-1200)
# Snap-on Studio Rod Bridge 15mm/19mm (C1241-1300)
# Driver Gear 43 tooth 0.8M 6mm Face - Cine (C1241-1600)
# Driver Gear 35 tooth 0.8M 10mm Face - Cine (C1241-1700)
# Driver Gear 50 tooth 0.6M 7.5mm Face - Fujinon ENG Focus (C1241-1800)
# Driver Gear 60 tooth 0.5M 7.5mm face - Canon ENG focus (C1240-1900)
# Set of 10 Marking Disks (C1240-1530)
# Foam Insert (fits into a Storm Pelican 2200 case)

Here is the link to the CFF-1 YouTube video I posted in another thread:

Unfortunately Mitch was not available to do the narration for this one

The render below is of the custom foam the follow focus will ship in. It drops into the Pelican Storm Case 2200 to create a ready to shoot follow focus kit. The additional cut-outs are for 2 knob extensions, a focus crank, larger drive gear, etc.

So excited for this thing!

It got me thinking the other day of some interesting add-ons. Since I've got you here might as well pitch them.

Keeping with the modularity of this design, and the unfortunate popularity of HDSLR's these days it would be cool to create a "Adjustable Drag Module" the would plug into the dumb side of the follow focus, and act as a chunky extension but also offer some added benefits.

Adjustable drag for those lenses that have none (CANON) This could be magnetic or friction based like the Chrosziel zoom drag (fluid) units. It would also be great to have a hard stop system built into it, again maximizing it's usefulness for those poor people asked to shoot on POS still cameras.

Just thinking

So with this additional module, you would have a $300 lens, a $2000 camera, and a $5000 follow focus?

Th idea is a rental house (or person) would only have to buy one follow focus for all their jobs. Not one $4300 studio, and one $1500 DSLR one. Any way price point of the tools has never kept people from doing stupid stuff with gear in this industry. Just look at Hurlbut shooting with Panavision zooms on the 7D.

A good follow focus is going to far outlive the lifetime of any cameras coming out today. Hell I still use a ff-2 from time to time. It came out when the Arri-III was new. The point is Oconnor has done an amazing job researching and designing this unit, why not create the optional functionality to make it viable to a larger market share. I see this as being the "GO-TO" FF for a lot of LA AC's soon, give em the tools they want I say.

BTW, the CFF-1 can clear a lens with a 182mm diameter. That's super-fat! Maybe there's some Russian bazooka out there that's this tubby, but I've never seen it.
