Introducing the New OConnor O-Box WM Mattebox

Any plans for a swing away option?

We've gotten this question from a few people. The answer is maybe... the handgrip mounts must be able to take very high mechanical load, and this might result in the swingaway bracket being very heavy and unfamiliar in operation, this last because it will probably need to have solid anchor points on both sides of the mattebox. (A "normal" swingaway design anchors the mattebox on one side, which among other things means you only need one catch to release it... you can take it from there as to what two anchors might mean.)

So we'll see what we can come up with, but can't make any promises yet.

Jim, I have had good luck with a Chrosziel DSW 500 swing away bracket attached to my Chrosziel 450. I use a 15mm to 19mm adapter to fit the 19mm rods. You might take a look at the DSW 500 design and fine tune from there.

Granted, I haven't operated the camera by holding the matte box, but it does seem pretty solid.

Can I buy one yet?

swing away design will make this truly complete in all ways.

Hmmm... I kinda agree on the swing-away option, but then again, this is a compact mattebox design more in line with the ARRI MMB-1, etc.. Personally, I would only want a swing-away option if it is rugged enough to work with the grip handles and all the forces associated with holding onto the mattebox. It would have to be a rather beefy swing-away bracket, probably more of a frame that can secure the mattebox on both sides to start with.

I just saw this mattebox at HD Expo... pretty sweet.

I didn't notice mounts for side flags - did I just miss something? Will they be available when the matteboxes ship?

Top, bottom, and side flags...along with a universal mask set!

is there an accessory for top rails? comes in handy for mounting follow focus from the top...

We use the Arri MB-19 all the time, and operate from the mattebox, and not gently either.
A single side swing away is fine as long as it's O'Connor tough.

I've seen smaller swingaway matteboxes (meaning ones not too big for handholding) after some time in "non-gentle" use and the swingaway mechanisms have loosened up considerably. There's a difference between "it still works" and "it's still just as tight as the day I bought it," and I assume our customers are going to insist on the latter.

So Evin's right about the "OConnor tough," and that would definitely be a design priority... but even if it turns out to be feasible in a single-side mount, it may very well end up being more massive than folks are used to, as Jeff points out.

Won't write it off yet though.

got to play with it at the HD expo in nyc. I think it's the little details in it that truly break it brilliant. the material feels so solid, it would take a hammer to make a slight dent in it. the top where the flag slides in has threaded holes for different accessories to attach right to the front.

the flag on top has a riveted design so when you fold it forward 90 degrees it actually caps the matte box almost completely to cover the lens.

it's not just the toughness that's so great about it, the fact that O'Connor just "gets it" and knows what AC's and CAM OPS do day in and day out with their rigs and applying these tiny details that really make is shine.

It was simple but brilliant.

It's a clever design, but due to the bellows-ring round filter option we offer and intend to expand on, we would definitely need a relief mechanism allowing the mattebox to move forward before swinging... so ours would have to be more technically traditional.

I love all these accessories great job. It's nice to see a company only deliver top notch well thought out gear at affordable prices that would be welcomed on any set. Keep em coming!
