  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Introducing Epic-W 8K

We did a low light test from ISO 400 up to 12800.
Shot with the Standard, Low Light and also the Skin Tone-Highlight OLPF.

The video is filmed 8K HD at 6:1 with REDWideGamutRGB and REDgamma4.
Uploaded straight to YouTube in 8K and without any Colorgrading.
Update with Helium Color Science will follow!

is there an estimated timeline for when Helium Color Science will be available? I'm just curious because I don't shoot a lot of low light and am loving what I am getting out of my Epic-W.

Last Word was November Carlos. Good news is Phil posted confirmation on updates for premiere pro which is huge because that means things are moving very quickly. It took 3 times as long for adobe to update for RAVEN + SCARLET-W. Things are looking good for HELIUM Users

Edit: I think it is worth sharing Phil's Premiere Pre-sets again Makes getting projects for HELIUM up faster

These presets are awesome, installed them yesterday after I downloaded the Premier Pro CC update. Thanks Matthew!

Had some hawk anamorphics on this yesterday

Scott, that's the first thing I'm doing too when mine arrives on mon / tues too.

Will post some 3200ISO anamorphic stills when I have them. Hopefully it looks pretty clean for T4 anamorphic shooting on Helium.

Hate to say it, but wish I ordered from RED.com instead of my dealer, cause looks like I'll be waiting a while to get my Epic-W.

Nothing is coming from red.com (at least eu.red.com) either I guess. Last week they were waiting for a new batch or something, and then my rep stopped responding :) a bit worried

You will get taken care of. The demand is huge. I received my Forged Weapon a week ago, after being upgraded to Helium. I know the wait sucks, believe me as I waited 11 months for the original RED ONE and I have waited 19 months so far for VV and will be waiting for a while longer. At least Red was gracious enough to tide me over with Helium until VV is ready. I still plan to go VV as it will be a rare camera and I can always buy or rent a Helium.

Totally agree... Red's been really good to me, even before I actually paid for my camera. I put down my deposit on December 13 for a Scarlet-W and Red loaned me a Scarlet-X Dragon in August, which I still have because my Epic-W just arrived today also; I'm going to send it back on Monday. With a little regret, but that will only last until my monitor and v-mount plate and first minimag arrive. :)

It's my first Red, so I'll probably have this Helium dealie for quite a while... and I do plan on renting it out now and then ;)

Make sure you have the proper clause in your insurance to rent. If you don't, handing your camera to someone is not covered under normal insurance. You don't want to learn that lesson the hard way. :)

Which monitor did you order? I am just north of you, in Sammamish, if you ever need anything. We need to get all of the PNW shooters together. Even if it is just to grab a drink and talk shop or watch the Seahawks play. There are several of us up here.

I haven't gotten insurance yet, so that's good to know. I've been listing my gear with CameraLends, which provides its own insurance, and verifies the insurance for renters who are renting big-ticket items like Epics... so I haven't looked into that part yet. But clearly I will have to soon.

For now, I'm starting with a 4.7 inch RedTouch; I'm rigging my Epic up for the smallest and lightest configuration possible to start with, because it's what I'll be trekking with. I'll probably add other stuff later, like one of the OMOD XLR modules, but for now I just want to get up and running with a fieldf-friendly kit -- basically something I can carry on my next snowshoe camping trip and/or mountain climb. And in the Himalayas. I don't want to lug around assloads of extra weight again -- when I climbed Kilimanjaro, I was carrying a 35 pound pack because I had my 4x5... and the guides recommended a ten pound pack. I didn't even get to use it on the summit due to HACE... sigh.

Defiitely up for a drink + chat sometime. And the way things are working out I might need to rent/borrow a minimag and v-mount plate for a shoot next weekend, since I had to sell my Cion to pay for my Epic-W, and don't know if I'll be able to get those bits in time for the shoot at this point. :)

I'll post some too. Lens looked absolutely gorgeous on it

Well then. RED is more popular than even they imagined.

The OLPF filter no longer has the LP portion in it. The LP is now part of the glass on the sensor, so you can't swap it out.

Really? For both Weapon 8K and EpicW 8K - or all new RED sensors? Is that true for the Panavision versions of Weapon - OLPF on the sensor?
I understand that adds greater flexibility to the glass filter for color science to be decoupled from OLPF, but then it shouldn't be labeled as interchangeable OLPF.
Would like very much to see 8K images with and without OLPF.

I believe this happened with the transition to the entire DSMC2 lineup.
