  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Introducing Epic-W 8K

Just bought a RED Dragon CF for an extremely decent price. Should I be worried these things gonna drop in value?

I would think the drop in price has mostly occurred already due to the WEAPON release. Drop in value is something totally different.

I guess I'm talking price = value. It's still very viable camera I get that but im questioning resale.

I guess the big question is, what did you buy it for? To use it, or to resell it?

Resale value is a good protection in case things go south, but that's not what I bought mine for... I plan on shooting with it until I'm forced to upgrade to something better because I'm losing too much money on rentals. I don't see that happening anytime soon though; both of my first two gigs using the Epic-W were in 2K ProRes. :)

Re: Epic-W Lomo Scopes / Helium Colours

As promised, here are some r3d stills on my Epic-W & my lomo scopes. Lowlight OLPF, 8K 6:5 ANA.

Wide one is the 50mm RoundFront. Tighter one is with my 80mm SquareFront.

Really dig the helium colours, you can push them all over the place. Even more so than the Dragon it feels like to me.

Though I wish the 4.7 Touch could be turned around 180 degrees for self-shooting like this. Hard enough focussing scope lenses as it is ; )

Exposing feels different too on Helium. No need to ETTR like I've got used to shooting reds. I did that with these quick shots: 2500ISO and then dropped to 1600 when I could have just closed down the lens half a stop or so. This feels like a good thing for shooting anamorphic. I'm going to shoot some more bits over the next few days if the weather holds off.

I think we should only be worried about recovering the investment fast. If you can recover the amount paid by shooting with the camera (or renting), then there is no point in worrying if the price goes down or not. Every equipment price will reduce over time.

I am wondering what are people shooting with the 8K weapon.

Both. :-)

I don't wanna be without a camera and from what I heard from both the dealer and red rep is they're not sure when I'll get my epic-w. Really I was just curious as to what others think.

But yes I will shoot the hell outta this cam.

Yeah, it seems like they're in high demand... from why my rep said, it sounds like they're shipping them about as quickly as they're making them, which probably has a lot to do with the fact that they're worth the regular price.

Still, if you have a dragon, at least you have a great camera to work with while you're waiting. A lot of Scarlet-W and Raven folks have been waiting for quite a while for their first Red cameras, after all. Some are still waiting, though hopefully not for much longer.

Helium color

Helium color

I'm loving the images I'm getting from my Epic-W. Much better in low light, great DR, and a more creamy look.

I can't help but wonder what would be possible with new color science. Do we have any sense of what the difference might be between Dragon color and "Helium color?" Any hints on when we can expect it? If I recall correctly Helium raw files will be compatible with the new color science, so the data is there - just not accessible yet.

Epic-W just landed in the Bay Area. Hit me up if you want to do some tests!

Where did you hear this?

I am pretty sure this is correct. My Dragon is in line to go to Helium, and my rep said that if it wasn't complete by December 31st that it will get done next year, however he indicated (I think.....hmmmm) He also said it was the deadline for essentially getting in line.

I believe that was part of the major Oct announcement. Dec 31st is the deadline for all upgrades of older non-DSMC2 cameras (ie M, MX and Dragon sensors in older bodies).

Whether that effects DSMC2 cameras (Scarlet-W, Raven or Weapon) not sure.
