  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Introducing Epic-W 8K

Holy crackerjack! These are amazing!!! WOW!! 8K! WOW!

Red has done an amazing job. Very anxious to see the true Helium color science. I will upload some motion, hopefully in the morning. Traveling all day to Atlanta today set me back on some of my non-camera client projects. Maybe I can capture some nice morning light.

Can someone who has the camera, or someone from RED, confirm the frame rates at 6.5K? FF, 2:1, WS?

Someone asked about 6.5K 2:1 earlier that got answered but it was especially for 12:1 which was only around 46. So maybe by lowering the quality bit more, it can go faster than that. For me the magic number at any resolution would be 50p. (Still wishing Red could figure out a way to squeeze that out on higher resolutions than 6K)

EDIT: Ok, I see this kinda got answered while I was writing this post

Have been following REDUSER since the early days and now really excited about the Helium 8K sensor and EPIC-W

I have two quick questions (for Brent or Jarred) regarding what the EPIC-W brain can support:

1. Will 4K/UHD live monitoring (at least HDMI 1.4 or 6G SDI) be POSSIBLE with just a new I/O module?

2. Will it be POSSIBLE for future I/O modules to include 2.5/5 or 10 Gig-Ethernet for tethering?

Been waiting to invest in a RED camera for 5-6 years now and these are the two final pieces missing for me personally of an amazing puzzle.

Thanks in advance!

Interesting that there's no FPS bump at all from 8K FF to 7K FF but then a very large one from 7K FF to 6K FF. I wonder what governs that?

I asked that question that Jarred and you'll notice it is the same for Weapon Helium. His answer was that above 6K things get very intense, as it is not linear. 8K is nearly twice the pixels as 6K.

For stills work, you can shoot 8K FF in these FPS / Redcode settings:
up to 8 FPS - 2:1
up to 12 FPS - 3:1
up to 16 FPS - 4:1

Spent the whole day emailing and calling my rep, but didn't manage to get anything ordered by the end of the day... Only got one sample quote that had my address wrong. Curious if others had a similar experience today?

I can't seem to find this answer, so if anyone knows, let me know. The recording format says: Full frame on all the resolutions. Does it mean, it will not punch into sensor anymore when you go down on the resolution? That is huge. Also, when you record 4K or 2K proress, are they going to be the full sensor viewing angle? Or does 2k get punched in?

From my understanding any reduction in resolution has an associated sensor crop when recording R3D. However, when recording ProRes I believe the camera takes the RAW recording resolution (8k, 7k etc) and scales it down to the ProRes size - 4k or 2k. Therefore ProRes is not a sensor crop unless the project/sensor resolution is set to less than 8K. It would be a nice option to have 8k scaled to 6k, 5k, or 4k R3D recorded files. That way we would get the benefit of the full Helium sensor color, oversampling, RAW workflow, and focus/depth feel without the file size penalty of 8k that many productions just don't need. RED has always disagreed with this philosophy and the feature has never been offered in one of their cameras, although I believe at one time it MAY have been on a feature list (I'm thinking around the Epic introduction but am not certain).

Are saying you got crappy customer service from your rep on a day when each rep got 200+ emails plus calls? Please clarify if you are asking others if they got crappy service or if they also had trouble getting ahold of their rep on one of the busiest days every at RED? After I have posted a ton of times to be prepared for delayed replies. We are only human.

That being said, I won't tolerate a rep giving crappy service. Being busy as f*ck today? To be expected. Please clarify, via PM, if you prefer.

My understanding is that RAW by its very nature cannot be scaled. It is cropped.

Personally I found service today absolutely exceptional. Got through to my rep on the phone within minutes of the announcement, promptly received an accurate sales order and when I later requested a change to the payment method I had another reply within minutes. Thanks Tommy for your time today and congrats to all at RED for a miracle day where you clearly made dreams come true!

I was merely trying to see if others were also unable to get their Epic-Ws ordered today... Not complaining at all... I sent you a PM.
