  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Interesting information...

"pixels in the RED 617 Mysterium Monstro sensor (261,352,000)"

The implications of this for space surveilance and high altitude UAVs and derigibles is no doubt being studied. I think we have reached the point where we are downlink data rate limited. I am trying to imagine the coverage at half a meter per pixel projected onto the ground. 14 kilometer long patches every 30th of a second. Only the widest laser comm pipe could handle the fire hose of data at any reasonable compression ratio.

No.

All these stuff, sensors, etc. are a consequence of military tech being de-classified.

There are probably some voodoo stuff floating around that we don't know of.

Military always control the tech first. Whatever tech [military appliable].

And when something comes out for civil use, you can bet that they got something ten times more badass for their own needs.

it used to be that way. not sure about that anymore. I think tech is advancing/evolving so rapidly now (and in so many diverse ways), that no one really has a handle on all the possible applications for current tech.

Pawel, according to our research - You don't want to. The best and most "watchable" 3D I have seen was shot parallel and infinity DOF... :)

As a photogrammetrist I definitely concur; I would add low distortion wide angle lens (of a really hot Biogon design). Convergence can be used in special circumstances if the background is well controlled or green screen. It is very interesting as the types of lenses and approach to shooting for good stereo are completely different from standard cinematography practice.

My question is, will cinematographers give up their usual methods to shoot stereo or will stereo techniques and choice of lenses have to conform to standard cinematic techniques?

[For example the best lens for shooting stereo is a wide angle Biogon lens that can have about ) 0.05% radial distortion. A standard retro-focal prime will have about 2 to 4 % distortion range for lenses between 50 to 24mm. Radial distortion causes unwanted differential Y parallax out from the centre of the lens. Y parallax causes stereo viewing fatigue and head aches. The other solution is to carry out radial distortion correction on every frame in post, (bi-cubic convolution), very time consuming. Best solution, shoot with lenses that don’t have radial distortion in first place, such as new generation Biogon design such as the new Schneider digitar lenses. However custom mechanics required to get them to pull focus etc. ]

Will there be a new breed of stereo cinematographers?

I tend to loose quite a bit of sleep over this one.

I agree.

We get approached by the DOD all the time, I think you are right the military and government really don’t have it all, and are increasing dependant on off the shelf technology, in fact now they are mandated to use so called COTS. This is partly because compute power is and software is so powerful now that today a handfull of people have the power of 300 hundred design engineering personnel of 35 years ago. This is how RED has gotten into the game due to good backing, design software, CAD/CAM and modern IC development. There is no denying that what we are able to accomplish now (in the private sector) is really a legacy of space and DOD research of 50 years ago. I work in New Mexico and deal with folks from Los Alamos and Sandia national laboratories all the time, and I can tell you that there is a very even flux back and fourth between government and private sector.

And yes the military does occasionally have something “badass” that no one else has, as our Bulgarian friend has pointed out, but you wouldn’t want to shoot a movie with it!

There's some UAV's i wouldn't mind strapping a red to... GPS: arial motion control.

There are more pixels in the RED 617 Mysterium Monstro sensor (261,352,000) than there are rods and cones in both your eyes (126,000,000 x 2 eyes = 252,000,000).

Just in case you were wondering... :-)

Jim

I just realized something....

Well I guess you are right, RED technology doesn’t come from the military it actually comes from mechatronic killer robots from the future.

I am sure Jim could easily create the team needed to build those mechatronic killer robots, but I hope he stays focused on the RED Scarlet and Epic systems.

There are many possibilities with a sensor that large. The cannon 3d lens was not sucessful because there was no workflow to support it (yes Stuart, workflow, workflow, workflow!). Now that the tools exist to deal with the stereo content, stereoscopic production is alive.

Imagine animorphic left-right pairs on the 617...

Imagine juicy offset metadata following the image data to sceens of all sizes and automatic cropping and offset at playback in any 3d theater.

The Red guys are opening a very large door, and the movie industry will never be the same...

NAB 2012... the date when RED releases the first camera models that eventually become self-aware....

That is the end game when the Kurzweil Singularity is upon us, isn't it? The cameras will be part of, or controlled by, self aware robots that will be able to download programs with the artistic sense of any of the great directors. Editing and augmentation with CGI will be highly automated and integrated into the acquisition process, capturing geometry and surfaces along with the images, to allow walk-through and even interaction. Just hang on until ~2035 and see for yourself.

It will be interesting to find out what these self aware robots think is interesting enough to make into a film. But I suspect most of us born before the Singularity will still be drawn to human-robot collaborations with a human sensibility.

On the 617 there’s enough room to put 3 lenses abreast like the old 35 mm stereo cameras.

It’s hard to believe that they could develop and sell such an instrument (617) at the suggested $50k mark. Its hard to imagine such a thing for less than $150k, are Hasselblad, Leaf Phase one or SONY ripping us all off?

I can't wait for a new, stereoscopic remake of 8 1/2 ("Seventeen") ! :w00t:

next year you will see a musical of the making of 8 1/2 called Nine.
