  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Interchangable OLPFs

I love this option.

Are we to assume that the standard wil lose a stop in the highlights but gain a stop in the darks? This makes sense, and sounds great.

Why can't these be used with the Red Epic MX?

The Mysterium-X OLPF area is of an entirely different design. Additionally these OLPFs are "tuned" to Dragon's pixel pitch, base sensor sensitivity, and color. Which is pretty different than Mysterium-X.

Why can't these be used with the Red Epic MX?

The OLPF is matched to the pixel pitch of the sensor. The OLPF on the MX is, for all intents and purposes, a fixed component of the optical path. Even if you did go swappable (assuming the physical space could accommodate it) the mismatch between an OLPF engineered for the Dragon's pixel layout and MX could create some odd and inconsistent artifacts. While it might be fun to try for a trippy look, overall performance would be seriously compromised.

I am absolutely freaked out that at 10:01 AM Blair and I were thinking the same thing!

Also no response. They never seem to register 'ticketing' stuff like this.

That...or if you go back to read old posts in this very thread from RED team, you see you should not be expecting an email until your number is up on queue.

I do recommend before you ask a question or make a comment, do take the time to read the prior RED team posts within the thread.

Hmm… Brent. I think these threads could be a lot shorter if you guys had some sort of "order confirmed" kind of auto reply for these kind of things. And when this thread started the email address was wrong, it was dragonupgrades@red.com instead of dragonupgrade@red.com so possibly some guys here sent their request to the wrong address so a little auto reply would be great. saying "Yes we got your email and we will contact you later" or such would be great.

This is not confirming an order. This is placing a request to get an RMA when available. This is a live email address, not an autoreply one, as every DRAGON upgrade communication goes through it as well.

And to note, the original email was never wrong in Jarred's post, that an incorrect statement. I had it wrong for 35 minutes in a much later post and corrected it.

As you can imagine, having to repeat yourself when you answered the question many posts ago can be frustrating. Note we also have an FAQ on this whole process on RED.com.

Sweet!
The interchangeable OLPFs for Dragon begin shipping at the end of the month.

Each OLPF module is $195. We will begin with shipping the "Low Light Optimized" and the "Skin Tone-Highlight"

"Low Light Optimized" is the original Dragon OLPF tuned for shooting higher ASA shooting, and similar to the OLPF used in the Epic MX.

"Skin Tone - Highlight" is the current OLPF shipping with Dragon that offers a stop of extra highlight protection, the most incredibly accurate skin-tones and color science as well as additional flare control, with the expense of a stop of light sensitivity.

We are working on an array of OLPF Modules including:

Underwater : Tuned for underwater shooting
IR Monochrome : Tuned for shooting B&W IR images.
IR Color: Tuned for shooting Color IR images
Dragon Standard : In the middle of the "Low Light Optimized" and the " Skin Tone - Highlight " .
Monochrome: Standard Monochrome OLPF

For customers that have taken delivery of a camera with the previous OLPF system we will convert your cameras to the new system for free at any RED Certified Service Centers.
If you are not able to send to a service center, contact dragonupgrade@red.com to get a modification kit sent to you for $100. Need to send back your old OLPF to get a credit of $100 to net free modification. Will need to do one-off firmware update to have camera moved from “fixed OLPF” status to “swappable”.

Brent,

I paid for my dragon upgrade in June, but I am still not able to get an answer as to when and how I can get the Dragon upgrade with either OLPF v1 or the swappable OLPF system?

If you want OLPF v1 tell your Bomb Squad rep. The swappable system won't be available until next month. At that point all Dragon cameras they make/upgrade will use it.

Brandon,
Its cool you want to answer on behalf of Brent, but... OLPF V1 has been unavailable for months and RED has not been able to give a date as to when they will receive spare parts, according to my Rep...

It's based on experience. I have a Scarlet Dragon with a V1 OLPF en route to me...

Id like RED to tell me that- because the only answer I got was :
" V1 DRAGON OLPF will still work with the current firmware and calibration settings

However we are currently low on parts so there will be a delay if the V1 OLPF is choosen, however once the modular OLPF solution is available, customers with the new V2 OLPF will be able to swtich between OLPF'S and its recommended to go with V2 because of this.

You can wait for the V1 OLPF to become avaliable however there will be some wait and we cannot give a rough eta on when it will become avaliable at this stage.

I´m very interested in getting my dragon upgrade with the "dragon standard" OLPF, I think I might stick to that one for the time being, will it be available before the dragon upgrade price goes up?
