  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Interchangable OLPFs

At this price it makes sense to own several "flavors" of OLPF's. This will give you the most "modular" camera for any shooting scenario.

Last question, how difficult/risky is doing the modification DIY style? Will you have the instructions available for us ahead of time so we can see what we're getting ourselves into before we request the kit?

My biggest question, is how fragile is the sensor between swaps? I just worry a renter is going to swap this, and get crud on the sensor, and this will make for a ugly situations.

Is the sensor totally nekkid?

Fantastic. Just sent a message to Red Rep to hold my shipment of Battle tested Dragons till this comes available.

Sensor still has a protective layer of cover glass on it.. so it's not totally nekkid but its the last line of defense so you want to try your best to not mess it up.

Love this.

Would be cool if you could add to the arsenal and include OLPF's with lens characteristics of some older glass. And Pro Mists, etc.

We are already working with 3rd parties to bring a ton of options.

Two important follow up questions:
1. What do I do when a dust chunk gets on that piece of glass? Is it safe to sensor swab?
2. When a renter changes this at the beach (they'll lie to me and do it anyway), and they scratch that piece of glass that's bonded to the sensor, what will that cost to have mailed back to Red and replaced?

Thanks!

Aw, heck yeah! Can't wait for this!

How can we get in line to send one in for the upgrade?

For the modification, email dragonupgrade@red.com. Once we have parts ready to ship, we will assign RMAs in order of request received. Don't expect a reply before then, we are sure to get bombed with requests. So when it is your time, we will contact you : )

The interchangeable OLPFs for Dragon begin shipping at the end of the month.

So damn cool! I'd say that was a pretty quick turn around too!

And, yes, we are making a case for OLPFs. Will hold four of OLPFs in their individual containers.

I dig it. I'm certainly going to have 1 Skin Tone Highlight (STH) and 1 Low Light Optimized (LLO) and when ready I'll grab up that IR Color because that sound freaking amazing as well as the Dragon Standard. I have a feeling there's one or two I'll also want when they are ready for sure.

As much criticism has come from this "overly complicating things" for those who want to unlock more creative and technical possibilities with Dragon this is a welcome piece of kit. Not to mention to help provide different looks and feels to our digital captures.

I don't think it does actually complicate things at all as it's optional and you can kit up with whatever OLPF you want and just roll from there. This is made for people who like options. I am certainly one of those.

Oh. And the $195 dollar question is. What size wrench is needed and are there any other special tools required to pop these in and out?

Awesome! I honestly hope you guys simply integrate this into all cameras going forward too.

For instance, if it was available for MX...could we unlock a bit more highlight room?

i am very curious what the trade-off's for the "standard" olpf are going to be between the lowlight opt and skintone highlight OLPFs. if it ends up like the skintone highlight with a little less headroom in highlights and more in the darks without artifacts... may be lovely.

Thanks for the clarification, Jarred.
