This new info on the upgrade clarifies things a lot.

Bit off-topic but a crucial question for wildlife shooter: How much power Weapon MG requires compared to Epic-X Dragon?

From the sounds of it (at least what I was told on the show floor) Weapon is using approximately the same draw as Epic Dragon. So a 60Wh battery should get you about 1 hour of run time still.

That said, we are in the early days of Weapon and if you remember Epic went through a smidge of power tuning at some point. So maybe there's a change to squeeze more run time out of those batteries.

I do think however there's a good chance that the Weapon Dragon 8K CF body might draw a bit more power. Bigger sensor and all that. Time will tell.

Hey guys let us put together a little chart with everything tomorrow.. I think a visual map on how everything works is going to be the best way to clarify things for alot of people.

It's not your fault for being confused, there are so many different upgrade paths from so many different starting points and so many time sensitive discounts that it is very easy to get lost.

Jarred did you guys get chance to do this. I'm ready to pull the trigger on my upgrade but i'm not sure on the final figures. Many thanks.

Jay, does not matter what Side SSD Module is on your EPIC/SCARLET when you send it in. You will be getting a WEAPON with the WEAPON MINI-MAG media bay back either way...

So... for us on MiniMag already, the side module is pretty much useless to RED? Can't we just send in our brain for the Weapon upgrade.. and take our chances on the Side SSD MiniMag resale separately? Or am I missing something here... I don't see any benefit to us having already switched to MiniMag versus Weapon upgraders still on 1.8" ?


Brent and Jarred's posts seem to indicate whatever Epic Dragon side SSD module you currently have, is kind of irrelevant...?

After your WEAPON order is paid for and invoiced (note, invoiced means shipping within one business day), the $5000 accessory credit is applied to your account to use on future purchases.



Three reasons (which also applied back with Stages RED ONE-to-EPIC program).

One, to meet our shipping estimates, we needed to order parts long before NAB started. By offering a bundle, we can more safely predict demand than having everything a la carte - with chance of overstock on some items and not enough of others.

Two, the more RED buys of certain products, the better our cost. Which, in turn, we pass along to you.

Three, understand the goal of the WEAPON bundles. After you send in your EPIC/SCARLET brain + Side SSD Module, we are trying to return a functioning package back to. Meaning, when you combine your WEAPON bundle with our existing EPIC/SCARLET accessories (displays, media, rail parts, REDVOLT XL batteries, etc), you have a functional package out of the box. Plus, the I/Os of the Base Expander are comparable to the I/Os on the brain you are sending back.

How about letting Users that order the Upgrade having to make the Choice on the Accessories with the Worth of 5000$ now ? that way you can order Parts, still have the a big Volume of Accessories and still everybody gets what they really need? Everyone can be self responsible for making a Package that works for them with the Functionality that works for them.

Unknown at the moment, but I would suspect not forever. There hasn't been any trade-in program for the Side Handle or other AKS. I don't think would should expect one either.

Thanks, Phil. What about this: I have two 128gb cards and one 256gb card currently, if I wanted to trade them in for value towards two 512 gb cards, would I only get value for two of my cards or all three (since I'm only buying two cards in return instead of three)?

Never said the module is useless to RED. You are getting a brain with a media bay, therefore we need a brain back with one.

Ah if you had to make the preorders a long time ago of course then it makes sense that it is now kind of fixed in the bundle.

wow... that is really precise and complete, i think everybody should be able to pull their Info from that... well done!

One technical question that comes to my mind when seeing the MG/CF Comparison, if that even can be answered at this point already though:
will Carbon CF with its higher /advanced LUT Power be more precise when Recording ProRes with e.g. baked in LUT and/or when Recodring REDLogfilm + DragonColor as ProRes Setting?

Since the Rest is pretty much self explaining...now you really could get some Rest

alexjentz, good question. I am not aware of any difference, but I will certainly ask.

EDIT: If you are encoding in LUT-processed footage, CF will be better with the 33-cube 3D LUTs (as compared to 17-cubed in MG).
