Indie Features On Red - The List

Viva Kappe

Viva Kappe

The third feature we worked on, entitled "Viva Kappe", is now in theatres here in Japan. You can see the trailer and more info here (in Flash sorry, so not the greatest quality as it seems heavily compressed):

http://www.viva-kappe.jp/ (site is in Japanese)

Shot on Red One at 23.98fps 4K, using a mix of PL (including Red 18-50) and Canon EF stills lenses (with the Birger/Impero system).

More to come

More to come

I just directed my first feature, Amy Alyson Fans, with Josh Sussman (Glee), Lochlyn Munro (Dead Man on Campus, Scary Movie, etc.), Jason-Shane Scott (One Life to Live, Starship Troopers II), and up-and-comers Brendan Bradley (Squatters, Redwoods, Love Conquers Paul) and Cooper Harris (Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus, Meteor Apocalypse, etc.). IMDb link forthcoming -- we just wrapped principal photography June 20, now the editor's assembly is going.

It was shot on the RED One Kiwi, Robin Charter's RED camera. Robin's dad shot 24 and Robin is a rock star, he's amazing. I was very happy with the RED footage and just how amazing it all looks, not only because of our great camera team (Henry Coccetti was our gaffer; he's done Crank, Forbidden Warrior, and tons of amazing projects) but just the look of the footage in general. So cool to finally have done something on the RED!

The footage is out of my hands right now until it is transferred to my own RAID on Monday, but I'd love to post some stills when I have a chance and more information as we progress. Couldn't be happier with the RED experience!

Between Kings and Queens

okay folks - I know there are MORE indie features shot on RED than these 42 - (not that that number is insignificant in less than one year) especially from other countries -

post here and I'll update the list - FEATURE FILMS ONLY - without STUDIO FINANCING please -

Between Kings and Queens, fisrt Nollywood film directed by Joy Dickson. Michael Morlan from Austin Texas D.P. the project using RED camera and lenses. The film was awarded a REMI at the Houston International Film Festival-2010. Link: www.betweenkingsandqueens.com

4k Feature Film shot for under 5k

4k Feature Film shot for under 5k

I just finished this trailer/teaser but have not set us up on IMDB yet.

http://vimeo.com/13875773

This script (I wrote) got into the top 25 for Project Greenlight back in 2001. We've shot (on RED) going between two cameras build 21 and 30 (making post very "interesting" :)

We started shooting 6 months ago (nights and weekends thing). I'm currently finishing the edit, color grading and sound mixing myself. Yes, the writer, director, editor and colorist... ugh. But it is COMPLETELY independent and all of my "hard" costs have been under $5,000. 148 scenes, 36 locations, 34 speaking parts and 200 + extras all under 5k.

UPDATE: MANILA SKIES (Himpapawid) has already screened in 8 international film festivals including Rotterdam, Tokyo, New York Asian American to name a few, and is invited to 8 more festivals across Europe, Asia and the USA 'til the end of the year. RED #675 used for HIMPAPAWID (Manila Skies) wrapped up production in mid 2009, the first full-length film in the Philippines to be shot with RED One and exclusively released on ultra-high def format DCP and HDCAM SR

With way over 1900 shots and way over 500 pure VFX shots this is a hefty and heavy Fusion pipeline job orgy. Simply every single shot went through Fusion and Generation. We still have some way to go, but we already see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Be informed:

This movie was started nearly 15 years ago as an indie film project. Jack Moik had the idea when he was working as model maker for some movies in the late 90's (real models) and thought of this movie to be made. Over years many were involved in model shop and live action shooting (most of the stuff about 10-5 years ago using a Sony VX9000 with interlaced letterboxed PAL, but the recent additional shots have been mostly shot on our RED ONE, so this is why we note the movie here in the forum).

As it turned out it won't be possible to do the required compositing post production and VFX "via Internet", where Jack tried to put together a team. As Jack joined us at Magna Mana he had the project with him and it was in more or less calm stage, frozen in some kind of inability to finish it as expected.

We encouraged each other to try to finish it, so the editing and shooting was mainly finished, additional digital sets and models were began etc. Lucky as we were we got some funding from "Hessen Invest Film" (somewhat less than 200,000 Euros), a local funding bank fond, where the jury members got so excited about that "long term indie production story" that we are now able to finish that indie sci-fi opera in roughly 6 months with local talents and our own staff. As it turned out a small, but very powerful, productive and dynamic team...

So please have these facts in mind when watching the trailer and don't just compare it to the last multi-million dollar features. Watch it and think of your own what you consider the value of this. And have a calm minute for those who had to roto hours of greenscreen DV footage... :) When you compare the DV keying vs. the recent RED ONE green screens - we wished we had been able to shoot everything with RED ONE, 10 years ago... that would have save us many man-months of work.

The trailer is in german, but you can have english subtitles on in youtube.
There is also an HD version online. We hope to have a native english version at some point.

Honestly we need every support for this soon-to-be-released feature.

So if you like it, please forward it to others and spread the word - this is the best help you can give to us. The more see it and like it, the better success the movie will have.

Please subscribe to our mailing list, or follow us on Twitter, Facebook etc.

Look at the website for some more details, and especially the funny behind the scenes diaries.

Any feedback is highly welcome :)

We think this is probably one of the cheapest and possibly at the same time most complex indie features ever made.

Best wishes,

Axel

Hi Mark,

Please add us to the list of movies shot on Red. Our film 'Pseudo - Blood Of Our Own' is currently in post-production. For anyone interested in knowing more about the film, please visit our website:

www.canadianbollywood.com/pseudothemovie

We will upload trailers and other promo material as they become available.

I just wanna add that shooting with Red One was simply awesome. We are so happy with the footage. Thanks to everyone at Red and specially Mr. Jannard for coming out with such a wonderful piece of technology. With some creativity you can really do wonders and look on par with many big budget films.

Thought I'd add it to the list here:
