I can think of a lot of unconventional creative uses for hires AND hi frame rates.

I can better understand the viability of an ultra-high resolution still camera, but I just don't know how more resolution at this stage of viewing is going to justify the extra expense for having that higher resolution moving image. 5k sounds pretty cutting edge to me. Do we really WANT to see the edge of a pore on an actor's skin?
Hey Jim - to confirm, the RED ONE can be upgraded to the Mysterium X, too, yes? I assume there will be an upgrade cost for that?
Congrats on everything again and again! Exciting times.![]()
Yes. There is an upgrade path for RED ONE to Mysterium-X for a cost (TBD). There is also an upgrade path to Mysterium-Monstro for a cost.
Jim
The idea of on camera compressed RAW for motion was a RED invention... and turning out to be one of our best.
Jim
The primary advantage to RED is REDCODE. Compressed RAW at over 23.976 fps. This is a core invention of RED that's full effects have not been seen yet.
The secondary advantage of RED is our sensor program. Some could argue that this is number one.
Mysterium "Monstro" is a sensor program that pushes the envelope past anything on the horizon. It will go into Epic, and another camera aimed squarely at the DSLR market. Epic ships with Mysterium-X and has a free upgrade to Monstro.
Scarlet has been talked about extensively. It is a 3K, 120fps camera with a built-in 8X zoom that starts at 28mm (full frame still 35mm) wide angle. The T-stop will be "at least" as published.
We have a couple of other "tricks up our sleeves". The important message is that we are just getting started.
Jim
Hats off to the guys that work out the algorithms for that stuff. We used to have a master bitslinger on staff that wrote code for scalers and flat screen display drivers in a previous incarnation. Incredibly complex, but probably simple by comparison to what your team has achieved with Red.
Future cameras will shoot ultra-high resolution stills and motion...

I bet the DSLR will shoot motion at a max resolution of 1080p, otherwise it would compete with Scarlet. No?
