  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

iMac Pro Build

The whole point of taking a 1080ti (or any other GPU) is acceleration.

I have a 1080TI in High Sierra because it's faster than any GPU options that work in Mojave right now... PERIOD! End of story. Stop arguing to the contrary because any argument is false.

Probably. And there's also a rumor that Nvidia and Apple are currently working together on drivers for Mojave. If that's true then the 2080TI would still be faster than anything AMD is putting out right now. NAVI is still a ways off so there's really no point in comparing unreleased hardware to current hardware.

I have to agree with you that 20 fps in 8k is more than 25 fps in 8k ;)

Kind of cherry picking, but whatever.

2080TI is a great card for upto 5k in 95% of the cases, but what if RED decides to release an 8k camera, the chances that you run out of memory during post are substantial and the RTX titan or RTX Quadro 5000 might be the better option when you love spending your money on NVidia.

Within a couple of weeks resolve will run with the new Nvidia / r3d SDK. Think that will change that list quite a bit.

10-core is the sweet spot with these systems. I have 10 core systems here along with an 18 and a 14. The 14 core is actually the one on my desk in my home office. To put it right out there, I should have went 10 core for all of them. The 14 under-performs compared to the 10-core in most situations and only beats it under heavy multithreading when cores are loaded, yet can't compare to the 18-core in that situation. Like you mention, Premiere doesn't scale well after a certain point. Really, it falls off noticeably after 12 threads and can't seem to figure out how to use more than 16 threads anyway. Resolve does way better, but you'll find the GPU to become the bottleneck before the 10-core CPU.

I'm glad to hear this. Ended up pulling trigger on the 10 core system. I'm really hoping to use this as a stopgap until the Mac Pro gets released, if that ever happens...

That list is for de-bayer only, the cpu they used is powerful enough to decode R3D in real-time on windows 10(and that without CorePrio), try linux when you need more speed.

Decoding and de-bayering is more workload than just de-bayering.
(I hope the decoding doesn't need GPU memory).

Uh, so comparing GPU performance in Windows is comparable to Mac now? This graph is based on Windows benchmarks. The other user was referring to Mojave...
These numbers will also change significantly once RED and nVidia dial in their drivers. I'm all for AMD creating some competition to instill performance gains, but I just don't see that happening any time soon.

It's all in Davinci Resolve and according to Blackmagic tech support it doesn't matter(margin of error) if you run Cuda, OpenCL or Metal. Resolve is programmed on a lower level and makes use of (almost) raw fp32 power and effective memory bandwidth. VEGA 64(standard) has more peak fp32 hence faster in playback 8k.R3D and GTX1080ti(standard) has more effective memory bandwidth(compression) hence faster with effects and NR.

To my understanding the new RED and NVidia software is for decompressing the .R3D's and doesn't speed up the de-bayer.

I have a feeling that 2x VEGA2's will be a lot faster in real work than 1 RTX2080ti for more or less the same price.

The decompressing of 8k.R3D can be handled in realtime by the new matisse cpu on the low end($ <500) and Threadripper and EPYC on the higher end of the cpu spectrum.

And let's not forget that there are also a small percentage of people who use other camera systems who won't benefit from the RED+NVidia collaboration (but will benefit from the AMD efforts).

I don't really know how it works, Saw the Red / Nvidia 8k presentation on YouTube and as I understand the new STK will pretty much only use the GPU and hardly any CPU to play back r3d's and do so far better than ever before. 8k in 1080ti and 2080ti like nothing while leaving the CPU pretty much alone. But maybe resolve and the others does not implement it on thier osx builds as Nvidia and Mojave does not mix. Sad if that's the case. The new STK is implemented in the beta rcxp.
