  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I'm so bored...

(snipped a lot)
What is surprising is we are basically paying (we'll not me yet) almost $40,000 for the system of an epic M body alone and much more as a system complete. This has to be a huge profit and could be brought to the table way less for sure. If RED sells only 1000 EPICs the total gross is over 40 million for brains/bodies alone. I believe they are close to selling that now if they haven't already gone over that. And think about how many RED One's have been sold.

I can't imagine the development of RED has cost anywhere near that amount so they must be doing great. With all that profit I don't see how they can't pump out things just a tad bit faster. In a free market economy things are priced based on supply and demand. Red seems to have a very good way of keeping things in high demand. I just hope the price point of the scarlet is where we all anticipate.

The launch of the new Canon, I was hoping would be closer to RED so Red and others would have to level the playing field on camera body price. I hope to see the Scarlet much more realistic than the EPIC in terms of pricing.

All that being said, based on the pricing of other cameras, Alexa, etc, RED is still much less expensive and a higher resolution system.

A computer case comparable to that of a Mac Pro costs only about $100 to make. A Mac Pro costs $2,500 plus. The vast majority of that is in the electronics and R&D, not the metalworking.

I don't think you fully appreciate the enormous amount of R&D that went into creating EPIC, nor the cost and sophistication of the electronics.

There are not many RED employees, but I'm betting most of them involved in R&D are extremely well compensated, as they should be.

D

David,

I totally appreciate the enormous amount of effort, R&D, etc. The platform is now done and the components of the electronics are not super expensive once that process takes place and manufacturing continues in high numbers. Perhaps the pricing will reduce once they recoup some money back on the expense side.

The RED ONE only got more expensive as time went on because there wasn't that much competition and perhaps they needed to invest in the development of the EPIC. I've read even sensor manufacturers have vastly discounted their chips, including Sony, etc. The framework is expensive for sure and I am not saying that the vast majority of the profit from the Epics go into the electronics and that type of engineering, etc. I am just stating that RED seems to be selling the M as a higher end option or elite custom EPIC from a marketing standpoint and has claimed that the slow process of getting them out has been because each is hand machined. Machining, once the tooling and jigs are set, is easy to pump out over and over and over quickly.

Either way, I was just passing time. RED knows their shit and is doing great. Hey I'm here and ready to buy whatever the price.

Tick tack tick tack - its almost 5pm in Croatia. A long way to go until 6pm PST. deep btreaths.... it will come :-)

Today in history: On November 3, 1957 a young stray dog from Moscow became the first living creature to have orbited space. Laika was one of three dogs trained for the flight. Hurray for hero dogs! BTW, Laika is Russian for scarlet.

I like watching how the Recon and Scarlet board viewership is steadily growing. You usually see about 1,800 viewers for the Recon board and 250 on the Scarlet board on average. Right now we're seeing 3,300 and 1,200 respectively! I wonder how many of you out there are refreshing these pages every 10 minutes or so like me, hahaha.

I am excited for RED and their annoucement.. My excitemend lies more in the annoucement of when we will be out of back-order.. I have a very nice Epic on my desk that sits here waiting for all it's pieces. This is tough... I can only hope all the cool stuff will arrive shortly.

That sucks Jay! Hopefully the log jam will loosen up for you. I'm curious as to when Lindenwood will receive there Stage 2 Epic-X as well. If I end up buying a Scarlet today I can only hope I will see it sometime in 2012...but it is a risk I'm willing to take! :yesnod:

I know how you could liven it up...

Post a close-up picture of a button or something. That should get everyone fired up. ;)

We haven't seen one of Jarred's illumination-challenged product shots in a while. Just sayin'...

I thought that was pretty funny,

You mean the black button on the black body with a black background and three measly highlights where you can just about make out half a profile?

I guess it leaves more for the imagination (if that’s a good thing around here)?
