I think a good number of us "budget conscious" buyers are considering the bang-for-buck Global Media Pro batteries ($200 for 95wh with RED chip) But on paper, according to the dimensions, it won't fit on the v-lock expander. I reached out to a sales associate with GMP and they told me it will fit because of the shape of the battery. Sounds skeptical, but if he's right, I would save alot of money buying multiple GMP batteries. I previously made a post with more detail and pictures about our convo here, but no one was able to give a definite answer: http://www.reduser.net/forum/showth...dable-V-mount-batteries&p=1603830#post1603830

If you are going to NAB this week, can someone make an effort to place one of these GMP batteries on one of the demo model Ravens that RED will have displayed and see if it fits without blocking any ports?

3rd party batteries void your warranty I believe. Read it before going that route

I don't know if this is true or not, but if it is, that's ridiculous. Almost every cinema camera utilizes third-party batteries.

http://www.red.com/warranties

"RED products are compatible with RED software, RED parts, and RED products only. Use of any software, parts, or products other than RED or RED approved software, parts, and products voids any and all warranties."

If they are not RED Approved then using any gear on your camera voids your warranty it would appear. I would check your proposed battery with RED's approved 3rd Party equipment list

Lol, wait what? If they damage the camera than yes. But simply putting one on doesn't void the warranty haha. Maybe just read it wrong.

Edit: Just read the last post. Well, damn. haha

I've been shooting with RED cameras for years with everything BUT red brick batteries. I've used a red brick maybe once. I've never encountered any problems. It's to my understanding that with the wave these new DSMC2 cameras, RED is now embracing third party accessories.

Then they might update their official Warranty Statement to reflect those recent wedding vows ;-). As it is written now: if you attach any non-RED component to your camera you instantly void your warranty. Seems a bit xtreme me thinks

Would be great if 3rd parties were given long-term, binding assurances that they can invest in RED accessory tooling and R&D with confidence. In the past RED, like Apple, has been a very closed / controlled platform - which has it's up and downsides. Third party companies go where the quantity of installed base is and with manufacturers who embrace the ecosystem concept by sharing SDK and pre-release protos to allow for parallel releases of Product and Accessory.

I love Elon Musk's approach of "here's all our Patents . . . have at it bitches!!"

Not true. And they never asked what battery was on the camera after a problem. If it's a faulty bat that causes the problem and burn the board they will see it rapidly.

Yes True. By the T&C's of the current Warranty . . . they reserve the right to void your warranty for using non-RED batteries or any component. Just saying, if you are embracing the 3rd Party business model then update the related docs to reflect that new approach. Simple

True.

It's a way to protect their business but it's not in their interest to burn the business of 3rd party as we can see how thing evoluated with so many 3rd party manufacturers ebraced by RED.

I'll do it if you research and tell me where I can grab a GMP battery here on the floor of NAB.

Or compile a list of RED approved 3rd party AKS.

Well, this needs to be adressed by Red asap. If my WC V-lock mount is voiding my armor warranty just by putting it on then that isn't ok. Not if Red is opening up to third party gear. Even the OMOD and Latitude would void the warranty based on that info. Seriously.

Phil, next time you run into Brent, it would be great if you could hint this to him. I think with all the 3rd party gear popping up now, I would say this needs to be cleared up and addressed officially. An official "RED approved 3rd party" list and sticker for 3rd party gear should be a good solution. Of course they need to clear themselves from damages that were inflicted by faulty 3rd party gear and batteries.

WARNING: While third-party batteries may be mechanically compatible with the camera system, the manufacturer is responsible for the performance and stability of third-party options, not RED. Damage to the camera system or third-party devices caused by using third-party power options is not covered under warranty. The camera may be unable to determine and display the voltage or remaining battery capacity of third-party power options.

"RED approved 3rd party" list can aslo be bothering for us REDuser as it gives RED another tool to segregate wich accessory is valid or not. But I think RED wouldn't play with us that hard. They allways have been good with me regarding warranty. They even covered my LCD sun burn once.

So should we regulate something that allready works well?

I asked my rep about the WC mount before I got it and he said that all third party gear is being "approved" by Red. So I would guess that warranty will be valid if using such third party gear. However, it would be wildly insane if Red is focusing so hard on marketing that they are so open to third party gear at this years NAB if the warranty would be void when using them.

My first guess would be to see if GMP has a tent at NAB? If not, I guess you would have to see if you can spot one on the floor amongst all the gear-heads walking around. (not ideal I know) They all look pretty similar. GMP batteries have the same HxW but the depth is different depending on the wh. They mostly look like this

This is the impression I get as well. Like many legal binders, they are there to exercise in extreme cases of misconduct or neglect.
