If Jim Jannard goes what would happen to Red?

Best wishes to Paul!

I assume if anything were to ever happen to Jim, they would just use RedUndead...

But I'm betting that Jim outlives most of us anyway.

Best wishes Paul.. Wish you a speedy recovery so you can continue pursuing your amazing dreams. !

I'm thinking of investing in an Epic, but I was wandering what would happen to Red Digital Cinema in the unfortunate event of J.J. retiring?

I know this is a pretty indelicate question to pose, but nevertheless legittimate if the there is the danger of investing in a technology that could disappear from one day to another if it's charismatic founder/owner was to go.

Anyway, many more prosperous and successful years to Jim, whatever the answer might be.

an epic last for about 2 years or so i think jim will stay longer...

Good Luck to you Paul!

We've made a documentary ("Testimony" or "Lebens(W)ende", quite successful and international recognized) some while back in 2008 with a fellow film maker who has actually an inoperable tumor in his brain and he is still with us. I got the impression he lives everday like it being a gift, for his family and himself. Totally mind changing, keeps everyone so much to the bottom of live, to the essential things in live. So I can imagine your feelings. It should help you that so many aorund the globe feel with you. Thats a good sign!

About that silly Jim and retiring question:

The few times I spoke to Jim I learned him to be extremely passionate about what he is doing. Cameras are his hobby. So in my perspective he will never retire, or he has already retired (from Oakley...) to follow his dream.
As long as no "better" dream hits him, we can be sure he is dedicating all of his passion into this, driving our industry to new courses. And his influence is addictive to the poeple surrounding him or following him. Us and you included.

Jim ones wrote the EPIC is ready, time to retire. Thats a real joke.

But even when we imagine that this would be true, the EPIC has enough potential to drive our industry for decades, as film did before. Clearly some day something better than an EPIC will be there - thats Moore's law - but what is already in our hands now is soooo exciting and "beyond" that we have reason to worry about anything.

To put an end to this "What if?" debate... did Apple go away when Steve Jobs took a sabbatical a few years back... or even after he finally succumbed to that illness?

Red, I feel, is also positioned for any such contingency. If that were to happen to Jim, as a customer I would have a hole in my heart, but knowing that the company would continue on in much the same fashion as before, the hole would be less painful.

Thanks again, guys. Don't think for a second I don't value everything. I have known for a little about this but wanted to make sure in case something did happen that I stuck around long enough to tie everything up. That said, the Doctor is very hopeful and so am I.

Every day is a gift for all of us nothing is certain.

But the love from the community is heartfelt and appreciated. Thank you.

@Bob on his last post, there are a lot of personalities on reduser not only fanaticboys as same as happens with a company like RED. Jim is only one of the founders and their principal mentor like Ford when invented the T-model, democratizing the technology of his time.

@Paul, best wishes to you, hope you get well. May God be with you, we all know He/She will :-)

...I don't know, I really like the Epic, it's a great camera in the right hands and at that price it burns every kind of competition, but the cultish aura surrounding Red might have been a good marketing tool at the beginning, but now it's only turning seasoned professionals away. I've heard countless times over set-break-talk, and I'm paraphrasing...leave reduser, it's just a bunch of fanatics patting eachother on the shoulder.

No one's making anyone show up here. That's an extremely hurtful insult to an amazing community of real people helping each other grow in their arts and crafts and pushing our technology. The people here are very special to me. Anyone that doesn't appreciate this forum can move along, I'll be here.

btw, this is jim's legacy (or a fraction of it) - so i'm guessing it's in his interests that it lives on.

Apple is a corporation owned by stockholders, like Oakley was. Red on the other hand -at least to my knowledge- is solely owned by Jim Jannard. I don't know of any other big technology company which is in the same situation (ie. privetely owned).

Yeah, but look how Apple roared back when Steve Jobs retook the helm after he was dismissed by the board of directors a few years earlier. My point being that Jim Jannard has been the driving force in getting RDC where it is today, but the OP wanted to know if he would be taken care of as a customer if Jim should retire, as Jobs was forced to do. My response was to reassure him that IMO, Red will continue on even if he does "retire" because Jannard thinks a few years ahead of the rest of us. Would we get the great loyalty deals we've received in the past? I doubt it. But I do think the customers would be well served and I think there is enough product/product ideas in the pipeline to fulfill our needs as avant-garde movie makers and exhibitors to last well into the next decade.

I personally keep coming back, because of these couple of people who are kind enough to actually share some useful information... but, yhea, you need to dig a lot, under tons of Cool, Great, Fantastic... and I confess, I did my share, but ehey, on the long run, it's rather boring.

I'm digressing here... so, is there anyone out there who can give me some sound advice, based on rational thinking, to the question that is the title to this thread?

Most people here are kind and very helpful. There will always be a couple bag eggs. I have heard this word cultish thrown around a lot. It's not a cult, it's the best cinema camera in the world so it will have fans. If you like someone else's rigs better then shoot on that nobody is forcing you to shoot RED, but I believe that the amount of stuff RED does in R&D, for it's fans is second to none, and that after your clear the fog, realize you are dealing with a master strategist in Jim Jannard, with his #1 helping shape what RED will become. Though they say they might now have a plan, there is a plan. Graeme Nattress is a genius. RED is roling like never before. The hating on RED has to stop, they are always trying to reward their loyal customers, which means no dramatic-purple-pro-se' complaining.

I am sure if you have two people you like and the rest distract you, and time is money, set up a time every couple of days to check in with them. Honest, friendly advice. This is a special place where we like to meet. Be happy and you have a chance to be part of it, if not what's the use if you aren't having fun? Breaking new ground on and off set for the betterment of filmmaking and the world really.

My best to you and yours.

I drive a 37 year old truck that they only made about half a million of. There are 3 different companies that make body panels for it. All parts are available. I can go buy brand new reproduction parts. As I said earlier in the thread, there are enough cameras out there, and enough of the industry uses them, that even if the federal government came in and shut down Red and melted down all the remaining stock, people would service them, and poeple would figure out how to make new boards for them, and life would continue. They are a part of the film industry now. Just like people put new electronics in old cameras (look at P&S technic SR and BL upgrades). So have no fear. In 20 years you will probably have guys making custom boards for the epic in their garages, printing them out on 3d printers, to get retro 5k looks.

Yeah, I have a large benign tumor resting against both of my optic nerves and one of my main arteries leading right into the brain. I don't get much sleep these days. -- Thank you.

Bastard.

I only just caught up with this thread (because the title sounded dumb).

I'm in New York, I do rescues. Anything I can do, let me know. I mean that.

Here's some sound advice ... in One hundred and Twenty Years there might be over Twelve Million people on the planet, but everyone alive now will be dead! The only thing left from our little group (reduser.net) may be the films we make and the stories we tell with our RED Equipment. You could be dead in Ten years or less. Relax, be happy, enjoy the ride! Jim Jannard has made it a better world for all who stumbled onto RED.com.

Thank you Fireman!

All my best, take it easy on my boys at RED they are working overtime for us. Truly appreciate the love -- thank you!

This is really just a Fan Boy thread in disguise. Everyone appreciates all the talent at Red, but we all truly
appreciate what Jim's brought to the table.
