  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

IBC - Motion Mount ready to ship...

Yep. I'm keeping both my "static" PL and EF Mounts for a variety of reasons. Certain lenses, crazy low light, maybe some 3D stuff.

PL Motion Mount is on it's way. EF Motion Mount in the future, likely after I get to train my Dragon.

I'm betting for a large chunk of what I shoot I'll be able to keep the Motion Mount on the camera most of the time though. Which is exciting. I am somewhat fascinated by this soft shutter and how it will make my footage feel.

I'd say you should keep the standard mount! The loss of light when it's on is not always desirable
 
Also make sure to treat the display in the mount just like your sensor! You probably want to have this piece of your kit to be long lasting... There's a back cap if its not on and have a rubber ball dust blower next to you at all times :)
 
Remember folks. When your Motion Mounts arrive to black shade.

I'm guessing, while not in the manual just yet, that switching between static mounts and the Motion Mount modes (soft and square) black shading is going to be recommended.

Don't think that's the case for regular ND mode from what I can tell. I'll know more tomorrow.
 
Will there be a cheaper version of the motion mount like with AL instead of TI?

Looking forward to read about your tests. :)

When using the motion mount modes a new calibration would make sense, as the MM does the shutter and the sensor works with 360degree (right?).

But i don't see why there should be a difference between the two modes and why there could be a re-calibration needed when you switch between them. I also don't see the need for a new blackshade if you switch mounts and just use the ND-only mode. It doesn't change the way the sensor gets its data, you just add a ND in front of it.

Well there's 3 modes in reality.

- Normal ND, which gives you 1.6-8 stop range and I believe leaves the shutter alone.
- Motion Mount Square, which gives you 1.6-4 stop range and takes over the shutter operation by setting it at 360 degrees.
- Motion Mount Soft, which gives you 1.6-4 stop range and takes over the shutter operation by setting it at 360 degrees.

That's what I think based off of what I know about this technology. I'll know a lot more very, very soon. So basically if you're shooting with one of the Soft or Square modes a black shade would be appropriate.

A black shade isn't necessary with a mount change unless you are drastically changing the exposure time. The process only corrects based off of the dark images captured. However, it is good practice to black shade whenever installing new firmware.

I'm curious too, Axel.

RED, any chance there is an aluminum version in the works?
For those of us that prefer smaller compact primes, an AL version would rock (and fly off the shelves even faster then the TIs) :gnorsi:

Okay. - Here's a possibly witless comment from a cheeky fella sticking his oar in and maybe asking for trouble either from RED or P+S or both. Has anyone contemplated a scheme where the motion mount is made available and workable for the non-powered flavour of the IMS-Mount system. Drivers of Blackmagic, SI2K, Ikonoskop, X35, might be interested.

Thanks Matthew. I had thought since the Motion Mount takes over the shutter control of the camera you might need to black shade, although I don't know exactly how it's implemented just yet.

So far I'm very impressed by the device itself and it's implementation. All on board, in camera, and controllable through the GUI or custom keys.

PL AL never, there's a reason why there isn't even a standard PL mount in AL.
And for a Canon AL MM mount i think Jarred already said that it wouldn't make a big enough price difference to justify it. I guess you can't just take the difference between a standard AL and Ti mount and assume it would be the same for Motion Mounts.
 
Thanks Maik, I was suspecting that might be the case. An amazing little device that solves so many issues and speeds up the exposure process, I'll definitely pick one up one down the Road after Dragon.
