  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Yeah, I was charting my performance with some desktop widgets, and even that export was just barely using my Titan, maybe it topped out at 39% usage for a bit of the export.
Thats interesting. There's probably more CPU-power needed to give the Titan enough data to process.

Thanks for posting the benchmark, impressive results.
 
And to think some said GPU acceleration wasn't possible with R3Ds only a few months back. Pfffff! ;-)
 
This is fantastic! Just tested and played 5K 25 fps in FULL quality easy! Using a Z820 2x8 core w Titan 6GB.
A little buggy and some crashes when I tried to render out, but this is great!!!! Thank you! :)

I can't believe RED would release something that could (to some extend) cannibalize the Rocket.
Very few companies would do that :laugh:

EDIT: This is all with a 3770K overclocked to 4.4GHz, 32GB RAM at 2400MHz, Titan running a monitor at 2560x1080, and HD4000 running a monitor at 2560x1080. R3D was 5K (5120x2700) @ 8:1. For realtime playback without Rocket I get 5K at 1/4 and 4KHD at 1/2.

I'm getting similar results but with an i7 970 and GTX580 3GB. So I'm guessing I won't get much better performance with a Titan unless I get a bigger CPU?

I don't know, looks like GPU is where to be with the new beta rcx. Don't get me wrong, cpu will probably give a nice boost, say i7 3930k to start. What about 2x 580gtx, or a 580gtx and a K(quadro) series card? :)

Maybe, I just find it odd that I get the same speed using a GTX580 vs a much bigger Titan
 
Ok, just in case anyone else was trying to get a GTX 780 going with this on a Mac. Dave from MacVidCards just let me know that the current OS doesn't have any OpenCL support for the Kepler GK110 based cards (ala 700 series). Mavericks does, so everything should be golden by the next OS.

Big big thanks to Matt from RED for helping me chase down all the ghosts, on a weekend no less and to Dave for the final piece of the puzzle.

Running it on a i7 hackintosh with GTX 580 I get glitches every second or two if unsharp mask is used. These glitches are also in the exported quicktimes. Otherwise it seems to run fast and steady.

Interesting. The file that was giving me grief has unsharp mask turned on. When I get back to my computer I will test playback with all post processing disabled. Will report back!

Okay, confirmed. When I disable unsharp mask, playback at 1/2 and full res works perfectly (after buffering).

Dr Kilgroe has covered all this pretty extensively, according to him IIRC the 580 firmware is better written for Mac, giving it (currently) the advantage over Mac-flashed Titans. But as stated, Mavericks is supposed to sort this out, meaning the Titans will be the best card pretty soon. And by a wide margin, according to those currently for using them GPU-accelerated RCX on PC's.

BTW, I am getting about 30% faster processing times with open_Cl enabled. Once again, i7 Hackintosh with a GTX680 GPU and 32GB of RAM.

Scratch that! I'm getting 10X increase in transcode times! Christ! 3 minutes instead of 30+ minutes! Can't wait to see what multiple GPUs will accomplish once enabled!

Oh, and no further crashes or hangs. Dunno, guess it was an anomaly. In any case, I'm very happy!

From other posts in this thread, it seems like the Titan isn't being fully utilized. Does anyone have a dual Xeon and a Titan and seeing higher % use out of the Titan?

Is there any way to force it to use more GPU power?

Yes, and I get the same realtime playback debayers and same 1/2 good transcoding on my overclocked Hack and my MBPr. It makes me glad my MBPr is performing so well but disappointed that my generally much more powerful Hack doesn't have better R3D performance. In everything else I do, my Hack trumps the MBPr... even in Resolve rendering (about 2x-3x the performance depending on the task).

Same with the Titan as was mentioned earlier in the thread. 780 and Titan are based off the same Kepler chipset. I have it running very well in Mavericks right now.

I did try installing the kexts and frameworks from Mavericks into Mountain Lion. DP5 kexts actually get OpenCL working in Mountain Lion, but DP7 kexts do not by themselves. It did break OpenGL though and makes it essentially unusable. The OpenCL and OpenGL frameworks got the performance back to an extent, but various things wouldn't function in the OS, so I put everything back to stock.

For those that want to run the current beta but it keeps crashing because of the 780 or Titan, if you have access to Mavericks (DP5 is what worked for me), install all the Geforoce*.kext and NV*.kexts from Mavericks into Mountain Lion (backup the originals!). These are all in System/Library/Extensions. That will let you run RCXP. Disable OpenCL for the 780 or Titan in preferences. Close RCXP. Delete the Mavericks kexts you installed and reinstall the original Mountain Lion kexts. Now RCXP will run without OpenCL and just make sure you don't turn OpenCL back on for the 780 or Titan. Use Kext Wizard to do this, and remember to repair permissions and rebuild the kext cache before you reboot.

It's that easy to install/uninstall drivers in OS X, but you do this at your own risk. I bear no responsibility if you mess up your system. If anyone knows of a similar trick to get Premiere Pro CC (not CS6) to run with a 780 or Titan in Mountain Lion, let me know.
 
Software crashs everytime I try to open r3d file on my macbook pro retina. Is there anyway I can submit bugs logging so you guys can have a look at it?

I'll be looking at the issues people are having with AJA and DeckLink first thing tomorrow morning. And yes, same build as page 1 so far.

Mind sending some system specs along? And which AJA and/or DeckLink cards you're using?
