  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I want to tell you...

Guess again :)

Lytro is great. Lots of Fun. What they are doing is definitely cool, But in all reality their product is not really meant for anyone over 12 years old. We took a different route, and figured out how to do it without all the massive compromises.

Ouch

If that isn't a hint...

OTOH THIS might not be ready for nov 3rd.
As to the "Shipping" statement...

How anyone can not love this company for how it keeps changing the industry is beyond me...
I can't wait to see what people will be able to do with those light fields! Ah, the possibilities!

Clearly however I had the price wrong. It will be $11311 for everything.

What about the people who use the date by putting the day before the month?
03/11/11 = $31,111
Theory is wrong! (well I hope so anyway).

We should really stop guessing.. I think it's because we're just THAT excited that we can't control ourselves talking about it.

When you consider other alternatives, $11K for a full RED cinema grade system would be awesome. I'm just hoping that all this hype doesn't let anyone down on Nov 3rd due to price, availability or specs. I've been dreaming of owning a RED for a couple of years now, and have been doing 2K HDSLR videos since. I'm ready to make the move to the big leagues, so I'm hoping I can afford it and meets my needs as a photog as well.

Promise you …this 3d (ish) plenoptic “high res” camera is a TOTAL Red Herring… (do you say that in the USA?). Absolutely classic. It gives you an idea of how smart and how FUNNY the guys at RED really are.

They (RED) must be absolutely pissing themselves with laughter….(especially on a “scarlet oriented thread”.) Honestly re-read the “tone” if you are unsure from a “technical standpoint”. Someone at RED is taking bets…

My money is on a totally homogenized platform, Scarlet 3k(ish), (new form factor) Redone 4k? (don’t know about MX) and Epic 5k. See Deanen’s very funny quip, and YouTube video.

This thread is very funny because it’s not absolutely clear who is really messing with who(m)?

He, he, he, (cough..splutter), he ….he.

The days are just going to fly by…

Cheers,

Eric

Footnote:

Where else can you find a page devoted to the concept and etymology of “red herring”.

Quote from Wikki

"Red herring is an idiomatic expression referring to the rhetorical or literary tactic of diverting attention away from an item of significance."

The whole 3d plenoptic Lytros camera “thingy” was thrown in there DELIBERATELY to “divert attention away from an item of significance."

Jim says.. hint hint I paraphrase [“…and that’s the least important thing we are doing right now..”]

The thing that’s really funny is about ¾ of the posts on this thread are all crazy enthusiastic about a RED Herring. Even if THEY were playing with this stuff, they are using this literary “device” to play with us…

Jim's Web magic special

Jim : "Hey guys ! "

Us : "OMG you're Jim from RED !"

Jim : "You wanna see some magic ?"

Us : "Uh, yeah ! Of course !"

Jim (looking at the cam, with a mysterious eye) : "You'll have to wait for 3rd november."

Us : :banghead:

OK more Looney tunes,

Is it simpler than all that, all three are the same…

I.e. they use the same EPIC (ish) body.

REDONE has its guts upgraded or updated,

EPIC is still EPIC and Scarlet is in the EPIC(ish) Body.

So in terms of hardware,

Scarlet 3k, NEW Redone 4k and 5k EPIC are all in the same body(ish), same code, same accessories (and if need be same lens mount) and so on. So you can upgrade from a Scarlet to a NEW REDONE and upgrade from a NEW REDONE to an EPIC.

Is that too stupid, too simple, too wrong?

In other words the entire line up is completely consolidated onto one EPIC idea…

Give it a good kicking...

Eric

This sounds the most plausible so far.

I wonder also if there is some upgrade or trade in option for the original RED ONEs to a new (form factor EPIC style) REDONE. They are saying that EVERYTHING is upgradeable… including Hardware. From a commercial standpoint I think the EPIC form factor is amazing (It’s form factor has been a huge hit, and is one of the most distinctive RED elements) and I think it would definitely make sense to try and take out of circulation the original REDONES’s?

It also proves the whole “Obsolescence obsolete “ idea, if you can trade in your REDOne for an EPIC styled camera then that means that RED has got your back and does as much as any company can in terms of protecting your initial investment. None of the “other guys” can do that. With Hi-Tech and the rate at which it becomes obsolete, that is a powerful game changer, as the others are still running with “expensive and disposable/obsolescence built in” model for their product offerings. So for RED this also underscores the high value built in the USA/Quality idea.

What does the invite look like?

That's what I wanted to know, I guess there's their sign up for the party?.., or its the simple one liners they have been repeating over and over and over again????

E 

Sorry if this comes as a disappointment to anyone, but the 11th letter of the english alphabet is K. 3 November = 3K

You can thank my Captain Satellite decoder ring for that one.

D'oh...!!!

I was wondering about the numbers to letters thing too.

So exactly as you say K is the 11th letter of the alphabet..

K3k...?

Or $11,000.00 gets you 3k BUT it’s a larger sensor that you can use PL glass on?

So is it 3k for $3k, (not very likely…?)

I am starting to chill out about the idea of a 3k sensor but hoping the sensor is not too small…

11 does a lot weird stuff (mathematically).

It fits the simple consolidated line up 3k Scarlet, 4K (new RedONE) and 5K Epic,

Jim say there are THREE others soooooooo....

3k Scarlet, 4k New RED One, 5k Epic, 6K Dragon. All more or less physically all the same.

That’s about as simple and elegant as you can get right? Seems to make sense (maybe) :) ?

That’s a super massive release/announcement…

So I want to know can I get a Dragon or EPIC badge for my Scarlet…(pose about all beasty boys style, like broken off Mercedes hood ornament around my neck)..?

So seriously could you upgrade from scarlet to Dragon (he, he..)?, I bought a Scarlet but then I won the lottery… so I’m going to upgrade…I'm no fool...

It’s funny if you convert “Bill Gates” to ascii code and add up all the digits you get 666 (purportedly)

I've written a 2.5D renderer before (and used it on national spots) but even with a depth map you aren't going to be using it in place of a key or to fully light your shot.

In the case of lighting you have to take into account that not only are you calculating lighting you also have to calculate how that light interacts with a surface. A depth map won't supply that, you need full blown shaders. Which isn't to say that it wouldn't be really useful for isolating and grading particular lights. The largest problem with depth maps alone is that they generally aren't deep pixel. In this instance if RED is working on something similar to lytro then it actually isn't a problem for DOF but it'll still be a problem for something like keying where you need to key subpixel semi-transparency.

You'll need a very very high resolution sensor to handle whispy hair for instance... Then again with moores law 'very high resolution isn't terribly far off... But not like 4k or 6k... More like the 617's 28k+. The trick is that a 3D sample can either be of the hair for instance... or of the background. If you get a semi-transparent sample (optical low-pass or motion blur) you have a sample that's partly foreground and partly background which necessitates a key once again to figure out that transparency.

If though you sample high FPS (like 240+fps) and high spatial resolution (8-16 samples per deliverable pixel) then you can just average out the samples and get your transparency (which is how a 3D renderer works). You wouldn't need to store all of that information though, with smart binning of samples you could still break up each depth layer separately at a certain cutoff for efficiency. But the sensor still needs quite a bit of evolution before it's up to the task of eliminating keying.

I work on your typical summer blockbuster doing lighting, specifically 3d lighting. No amount of processor power is going to allow you to light this synthetically. The problem is, even if you where able to match everything perfectly automatically, it would look wrong, why? Well, simply because it can be changed. Directors and vfx sups. just can't help themselves from fiddling with things. In my 15 year carreer we've gone through this before, ray-tracing, occlusion, global ilumination, now HDRI, etc, etc. From the moment they first see the composited image, no matter how perfect, they have to mess with it, just because they can. But I'm sure it will help for other things that we probably can't even think about right now.

I always thought, "if the Red One R1 was upgradable to MX, why can't the scarlet be upgradable from 2/3 to s35?"
Hope this is the case.

One thing I will say is that we are working on multiple focus and depth map (think Lytros) but with wicked high resolution... The prototype is incredible. Don't tell Gizmodo or Engadget. :-)

Jim

AHA! I *KNEW* RED was going to make glass obsolete!

Chris

Could this high-res enhancement of the "Lytros effect" that the RED army is working on enable a 2/3" Scarlet to replicate the bokeh of S35 sized sensors, and other high end cinema cameras? Possibly another tool in our kit to steer our lensing towards ultimate professionalism.

Truly can't wait for my Scarlet!

Lots of new stuff... but Jarred won't let me. :-)

Jim

Jannard, you slay me. The other night at dinner with family, the conversation turned to economics, politics, and the virtues of a capitalist system. I made the point that, in a world still 99.999999999999% dominated by ego consciousness, capitalism, with its monetary and prestige rewards for the individual innovator/entrepreneur, is still by far the best game in town for everyone involved. With your frequent metaphors of "fist fights" and "war" and your childlike (in the best sense of the term) ebullience and enthusiasm for what your company is doing, it's quite clear that RED could never, ever, EVER have happened in a non-capitalist environment. You are a poster child for the best of what it has to offer to the world.
