Its been a challenge to get the audio under control with the EPIC.

Does anybody have extensive experience with the audio on the EPIC?
IF you do can you please give me a hand.
Ive tired the usual suspects, made lots of calls, visited the RED store, visited Location Sound, Visited a friends house and ive made some progress. It was working but damn I need some real help.

Things like Unbalanced and balanced issues,
I have mics, a sound devices mixer, cables all laid out and im ready to get this working great before my shoot tomorrow.

Thanks for any help in advanced.

Dude, screw the audio -- you got 4 EPIC-M's??? Right on, the Flores' hermanos be coming up in the world! :)

Hope you get it worked out, wish I could help, but I bet someone will chime in. Props again my friend ....

Hi,

From your post I am not very clear what you want.....

Thanks

1 can you select balanced in your menus
2 in unbalanced mode in my menus im not getting any levels.
It used to work but no longer gives me any kind of level input

im going from an MHK 416 into a 2 ch sound devices mixer powering the mic. The SD mixer gives me levels i can read its working and monitor from that. out of that im going into an XLR to 1/8th mini jack.

Thanks

The epic will only take in MIC level. You need a proper mixer that can output mic level instead of line level.

Send tone to the EPIC and you will set the level of the epic via the sliders so you just get 1 yellow bar after the green and you will be set.
If you dont have a wooden camera A box, then you need to make some cables up from your snake cable to fit the 1/8inch stereo jack.
I am sure Panavision in the USA would have them pre made and on the shelf like they do in Australia.

Forgot to mention.. The EPIC does not have 48volt phantom power but a proper mixer like an SQN, Sound devices, WENDT or something similar wont need it.
You cannot plug a 416 directly into the camera without a proper mixer.

Thank you
I am sending the 416 threw a mixer it used to work but doesnt anymore and im baffeled
i suppose thats not much to go on im gonna keep trying things

thanks

Have you verified audio signal at the XLR output of your mixer?

If yes, then...

Have you verified your audio cable is passing a signal? There could be a short, or a bad solder joint at the connector. If the + and - conductors were to touch it would throw your signal out-of-phase.

In this day and age ALL cam ops and DIT's should own a basic audio tester. Best one out there IMO is the Whirlwind Q-Box. Location Sound sells them.

Or you can just avoid all this drama and hire me as your engineer on your next shoot :blush5:. (hablo español tambien!)

Thank you all.

Alex great call, it was something as simple as that the solder in my XLR went bad.

Solution:
I had the guys from Wooden camera overnight me an A-box after hours.
I have to give it to them, he went out of his way to overnight me the item and came threw.
Its pretty cool and it works nicely, im very happy I gave them a call.

Thanks to Travis's quick thinking and suggestion.

Thanks guys.

Yes for now it appears the only thing that I have found to truly work is the Wooden Camera A-Box. Great innovation and they should sell several -at least until the Pro I/O comes out...and perhaps even more after that due to the cost of that sucker. But it will do a lot more than just allow for audio in I am told.

So will the Epic eventually have +48 enabled on the brain? Or is that something they can't do?

If unbalanced works and balanced does not, it suggests that you are using a mono XLR to TRS adaptor cable i.e. either the + or - leg of the balanced audio signal is being shorted to ground. We are aware that there are some adaptor cables out there marketed as "balanced", but on inspection they are not. Best look for a "stereo" cable.

At this time RED does not offer our own XLR to TRS adaptor cable for sale, but we are considering that.

And for similar misleading adaptor cable wiring reasons, at this time + 48v phantom power is disabled.

Wow, Stuart, that's a little scary. Disabling a function because people aren't using the right cables. Making cables ain't rocket science, and there's a wiring diagram in the manual, so off-the-shelf cables could be tested pretty easily with a voltmeter. What's the worst damage that could occur if phantom power was on and the wrong cable was attached?

Prudent rather than scary. If you use the an unbalanced adaptor cable and enable 48v phantom power you will probably damage your Mic. So 48v phantom power output has been temporarily disabled, use an alternative mic power source.

One of the main reasons we made the A-Box was because the lack of mini 3.5mm to XLR cables with the correct wiring. Almost all web searches return unbalanced wired cables.

Ours of course is wired correctly ;)
