  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I just want a shot

No no no guys. I didn't take offense to Nicks comment at all. Not in the least. Notice the winky face after what he said.

It's ok if he or anyone feels that way. It's America. You have the right to say what you think. I'm fascinated with architecture and those large homes are a lot easier to film because they have so much character.

No effete taken whatsoever.

One other thought - I'm not sure how you bill for those real estate pieces, but if you could figure out how to upsell them on a Plus package or whatever, and offer them say the same cost that they are paying now plus whatever a cheap dragon rental would cost, you come out making the same money, and you get to shoot with the Red. Hell, find a drone guy, do like three drone shots in for the delux package and you are all set. Figure out something that would make it worth their while to pay you a few extra bucks and then give it to them.

Cheers,

Nick

PS - I'm just ignoring all the insane shit in this thread ;-)

Thanks Michael. I have a lot of family in Houston (Spring, Katy, Magnolia, Tomball) I'd drive down just for the fun of it.

Nick it's like pulling teeth to get these guys just to buy what I'm offering.

You know, be it financial hardship or whatever the reason is that you can't shoot on a red... It is what it is.. and I dont think that should discourage you from asking for some help out of curiosity alone. I think for someone to say "shoot on something you can afford until you're ready" is great advice... however... "Being ready" is one of the most subjective statements a person can make. I applaud you for taking this approach. You went knocking on doors with this approach and to me that's admirable. Humility and humbleness to ask is what I commend. Your reason to want to shoot on a RED is the same as anyone else's reason to shoot on a RED. If it provided the same look then there would be no point to the cameras evolution so I discard that claim entirely. I think your curiosity to explore what the environments you regularly shoot in and how they would benefit from a RAW workflow with RED's color science, DR and resolution is a reasonable curiosity. The only reason why I've ever gotten better is from asking questions and really asking to be a part of something that was out of my reach... I think we all have. While I can sense some frustration in your responses Adam, I dont blame you considering you were given the same answer from multiple people over and over only to draw the same conclusion each and every time "shoot what you have access to..." when that in and of itself defeats the purpose of your request. If people don't want to extend themselves to you, then that's their prerogative. However to just keep telling you over and over to shoot what you have and only work within your means anymore than than one or two posts... is just plain redundant and unnecessary and quite honestly discouraging. It might discourage you from asking someone for help again and I'm not a fan of that approach. Much like Michael Ou, if you were ever in LA and wanted to just go shooting to see how the camera works in different situations to have a better understanding of the tool then I would say call me whenever you're around. I find it to be a very relaxing experience just taking the camera out and shooting on the streets to see what the camera can capture. And some people might enjoy the company, so you never know. After shooting, taking that RAW data home and playing around with it just adds to the experience 10 fold and makes you realize what you're really getting to play with. So with that said, I think if you just wanted to accompany someone who's just going to go out and shoot random stuff and walk you through the process and how the camera works while they're just recreationally shooting, then I think you should go for it. I'ts a great way to learn and also make a new friend. So ask away! I hope you're well Adam!

Adam, you've got a good eye. The real estate films look very nice but I can see exactly why you want to try a RED. I see some of the common DSLR issues. Of course, a lot of people won't notice it but you do and we all strive to do better with each project. If I were in Dallas, I would go hang out for a day and let you experiment with a Red. I thought your request was reasonable, especially since you said you weren't looking to drive away with the gear, just wanted someone to hang out with and get a chance to shoot with a RED.

Hopefully you get the chance soon. Cameras are tools, but tools do have impact on how we make things so it's normal to want to experiment with various cameras and see what you like and what you don't like.

Best of luck!

Wow. John. That's one of the best responses I've had all day. Thank you for that, really. You summed up exactly what I've been trying to articulate.

Honestly it kinda, sucked when I was told to just go shoot what you have. For the first time ever on this forum I was made to feel like I wasn't good enough to be here and how dare I have the audacity to request such a thing from a lowly DSLR user. I know that wasn't said but man that's how it came across to me.
It was a little shocking because I read how excited you guys get over your images and how thrilled you are with your cameras. I just want to experience that thrill.

And Michael I will certainly give you a shout the next time I'm coming to Houston. Thank you for that.

Thank you, Steve. Thank you for the kind words.

Brandon you made me laugh out loud. That 911 was freakin' sweet!!

Hi Adam, I think many of use have that desire. I've on occasion let some guys use my camera. It's good fun, and made a few friends in the process. It was nice at the Reduser group here in Toronto last year to two of the guys with a short that blew me away.

Hell I'm a proud owner of a brand new forged weapon. I haven't used it, it's not insured, and I lent to nice chap on this board before I have even rolled a frame. So many people have helped me out over the year and opened their doors to me. It's a great feeling!

Just a question... Anyone else get the desire run naked through those houses???

If I was in Texas and had a camera I would lend it to you Adam. Those interiors of yours where not all that bad, it takes time, talent and patience to shoot such and a red camera would be the perfect tool for it. So fuck these guys and go to the nearest rental place instead, show your work and ask them if they can lend you a camera so you can try it out for a project (and possibly offer them to use the material you shot for their marketing in return, most likley they got some new nice wide angle lens, slider or other stuff you can test for them) It's sad to see how just about everyone in this thread seams to be very over protective about their profession which is really depressing reading if you ask me.

First off Adam:

1) I love your hunger. Thats the most important thing - besides talent. And you seem to have both. Which is great.

2) If you are ever in NYC, reach out. You can shoot with us!

3) You've gotten some good advice on this thread, which is great! Def reach out to Dallas Red owner/ops and rental houses. Maybe offer to AC/help in exchange for time on the camera? The local NYC Red community has been a boon to us. Sure the Dallas scene could be boon to you!

3) Chin up. Ive been in your shoes. Shot on 7D (and worse) for years before moving to RED (and even that step was painful and extraordinary...took everything I had to make the jump).

4) I love your resolve! Never forget, one of biggest keys to success is a resistance to "no". You've had some tough love on this thread. Ignore it. Move on. The best always do!

5) Never forget our greatest critics are often our peers - people just like us (turns our its human nature to be competitive with our own...those we relate to and understand the most). So shrug off the criticism, take it in stride, and stay positive!

6) That rental house idea is super smart! Def see if you can test the camera there!

7) Hang in there. I gaurantee you one day you'll own a Red! If I can do it. You can.

8) Being ambitious, and wanting better tools, is totally understandable. A Raven is a logical step.

9) Not to overwhelm you with advice, but for whatever its worth, financing for gear can be more reasonable than may think. RED has some pretty good solutions they recommend. Maybe look into that?

10) You were brave to ask for help. I could tell it wasn't easy. Especially when you were feeling vulnerable. I give you mad props. That courage is I think what will help you succeed. Hold on to that. Truly.

BONUS: We have an 11-16. And we're shooting on Thurs. An industrial. Tame interiors. If there's anything you want us to get for you, just pm me...and Ill see if my b-unit can knock those out for you, cool? Wont be a Red. But will be a small crew getting you some shots in your style, to tide you over!

Best

I owe you one!

One thing I've learned from this is I should have waited until later in the day to post this. The longer this goes the better the responses. You guys are the ones I'm talking about. You guys in these last couple of pages are the type of Red Users I've come to respect and love. You guys are the reason I'm anxious to shoot on this system and get involved with this community.

Michael Dalton you made me laugh out loud with your comment. I wish I was in Toronto, I'd look you up. It's that sense of good nature that draws me to this community.

Nick Morrison thank you for the great advice. If I'm in NYC I'll take you up on your offer to shoot with you. That's very generous and I'm grateful for the invitation. I'll reach out to the Dallas Red Users and I might just swing by my rental house in the morning to see what they have to say about testing their Epic Dragon. I've thought about financing but until we get this big obligation taken care of that can't happen right now. Maybe some time next year. Thank you again for the kind words.

Björn... dude you've made me laugh so many times on this forum. I was happy to see you chime in. I like your advice also on reaching out to my rental house. I'll try to swing by there today. I think you nailed it with your last sentence. Depressing, yes. But so many more great responses.

Thank you all, really, I'm very grateful. Now I need all of you to visit Dallas this weekend. We'll go make a day of it. :)

Adam,

If you are or I am near at anytime you can have my entire system for an entire day!!

Having said this, I am now shooting a movie in Mauritius and might not be back to the US till next year...

I don't post here as much as I used to... But I am pretty active on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter... Follow up and any time you see a window of opportunity shout out...

Ketch!! WOW!! I am honored. That is a huge invitation and I will definitely take you up on that. I hope to connect with you some day. It would deb great to meet you and play for a day.
Thank you again!

I'll catch up with you on Facebook.

Ketch facebook is telling me you've reached your friend limit. I'd love to add you to my friends list. Will you send me an invitation?

I'd love to lend you my camera. No issues.

And if we didn't somehow see the value of owning a Dragon at some stage, I guess none of us would have had one.

Did we all become better photographers?
For some, yes. Others, nope.

Did we get a more fun toy to play with (which in itself can be a creative asset)
I'd say for most of us: Yes.
