  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I just want a shot

Hey man, I'm a bit late to this well-meaning yet confusing thread. I can see where people are coming from when they encourage you to hone your skills and that any camera will do, I get that, and IT IS good advice after all... but dang, you just want to mess around with a RED right? And you thought you could maybe find someone here to help you do just that. It's not about skill, it's not about craft, you just want to test something you believe you will really really enjoy and are working towards to, I totally get that too.

I'm in Kansas City, if you want to come over for a few days and go shoot something, you're welcome to visit if my schedule permits it. We can brainstorm a fun simple project for you to get some hands on experience. Or if I happen to be near Dallas sometime soon I'll try to remember to let you know.

Thanks Gunleik that really means a lot to me coming from you! If only you were in Dallas I would love to take you up on that. :)

Ces, you nailed it. That's the reason I want to shoot one. Hands-on experience. Also to see what I can do with it in the environments I primarily shoot.
Thank you for the offer. If I'm ever in Kansas City I will certainly give you a shout. That sounds like fun.

Adam, It may have been said already, this thread is getting a bit long, but shooting a RED is not as out of your reach as you think. All you've got to do is land a client that you can charge enough for a job that will allow you to rent one. You should never be paying to rent gear...always charge to client. Then the question on the forum can be "I've got client and money...anyone in the Dallas area renting for a bit under standard rate or flexible rate?" That may get you more of the positive responses. I hope you get a chance to shoot with one...cause that will mean you are charging healthy rates for top notch work.

Dynamic range is something I fight every day. Here in Texas builders like dark floors and large windows. It's a beast to try to control. That's why I try to do most of my shooting around dawn. Mixed lighting is horrible too.

I'm shooting on a 7D right now as flat as I can using the Technicolor picture profile. It's frustrating coloring those images because of the compression. I can't push them very far at all. Of course not nearly as far as I can push an R3D.

I can relate to you on this. I shot automotive interiors and exteriors for about four years using that exact same combination. Even just going from the standard profile to the CineStyle profile is a huge leap for the 7D. It feels like the equivalent of RG4 with a 1.0 contrast setting to RedLogFilm. It transformed that 7D into a workable tool.

You will feel that same expansion of capability when you shoot on RED. I didn't doubt for a second that you would find someone on this forum willing to give you the hands on experience. Seven pages later, I think I better understand why you want to shoot on RED.

Your request is simple. It's not gear lust. It's RED lust. Shit man, we ALL have that. And I think 7 pages have shown how we all feel about you wanting to jump in and drink the kool aid.

If you end up in the Bay Area, I'd be more than happy to shoot on RED with you. If you're at NAB, I'll buy you a beer. This thread shouldn't have started so hostile. We are literally all on the same team. I don't think any of us have a problem with bringing another shooter into the RED community.

Sorry for being a butt earlier, Adam.

PS: Everyone on this forum is the 1%. The 1% that can tell RED and ARRI footage apart on YouTube. ;)

No apology necessary man. Sometimes lines get crossed and intentions get blurred. I know I wasn't articulating my request well at first and it took a few posts to understand where I was coming from. Thank you for extending the invitation to shoot. If I'm in the Bay Area I'll certainly let you know.

Through all of this I'm glad you're feeling supported Adam! Sometimes we do more when we know we have the support of people we respect. Thats such a huge idea to embrace and I hope that it's sitting well with you. To have people like Bjorn, Gunleik and Ketch as well as all of these other fantastic shooters chime in should speak volumes to the support you have. Nothing is out of your reach when you have friends to help you get there. Now it might just take some leg work on your end to go after and seek some of these people out. However, I'm sure all of these gestures are genuine so I would say go for it if the rental houses turn out to not be as forthcoming as a bunch of the people here are. I'm glad to see that your asking is paying off.

Best,

-J

Thank you, John. I can't begin to adequately express the love I have felt here. I mean I have looked up to you guys for years and to have this caliber of people reach out and offer support is a bit overwhelming. It will take some leg work to make it happen but I'm grateful for the opportunity. I have a new level of respect and admiration for all you guys and the wonderful character of the people on Reduser. When I'm able to become a full-fledged member of the Red family I hope to return the favors and to show someone else the joy of shooting a Red. God knows my wife gets tired of me talking about Red imagine what will happen after I shoot with one or own one.

I've had a few guys PM me with the same offers but none in Dallas yet. So I want to give a shout out to you all. Looks like I might be trying to plan a couple road trips in the near future.

I'd let you lend my Epic but i'm in Europe. ;)

Just curious; what do you plan on doing AFTER having played with an Epic?

Have you looked @ the Black Magic RAW 4K cameras? They're a big step up from DSLR in terms of image quality and come pretty close to Red. Especially their latest 4.6k sensor. Most people have a hard time telling the difference unless they know what they're looking for.
And to get yourself familiar with the R3D workflow; you can download a bunch of free R3D files here:

Thank you for that, Milano.

I have a tons of R3dD files I've downloaded over the years and i love how well they play with my set up. Or at least well enough to work with them.

But I'm always happy to download more. Thank you for the links! :)

I'm hoping to get some footage of a typical shoot so I can see how it all works. I want to get my feet wet with using a Red from start to finish. I want to walk through the entire workflow from set up to black shade to exposure to framing to shooting, offloading, editing, coloring and finishing. Mainly I want to experience the technical side of the whole ecosystem.

I also think a Red will help you resolve some of the finer details in brick without aliasing or moire. You will also be able to push those colours more as well in your work.... just editing a commercial at the moment and 6k just saved my bum.... it will possibly be quite useful in the kind of work you do

I completely agree. And those are some of the things I want to see first hand.

Hey Adam,
if one day you get here in the little Switzerland, call me;)
you can play with the Dragon and the room color grading in Davinci 4k;)
so you can push R3d in top of their beauty.
And then we go to drink a beer;)

Well I guess I better book a flight. :) Thank you Luigi for the invitation. That sounds amazing. Gosh I would love to do that.

Hey. Epic dragon owner. In Dallas. Email me maybe we can work something out.

Yeah this is pretty awesome. I hope things work out.

Thank you to everyone who offered. I really appreciate you guys. You all are top-notch.

I'm going to skip 8 pages of comments (which I very rarely do, BTW) and cut to the chase: if I lived near you, and if I owned a RED, I'd loan you my camera. No problem.

To everyone else: you can either help or not (or even encourage someone else to help). Quit with the lectures.
