  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I just want a shot

So how did you go from this guy, upset with someone wanting something they hadn't earned, but felt they expected it based on their own criteria....

Dude, I have been on this forum for years... anyone on here that knows me or have read some of my posts know that I don't own a Red. Circumstances have occurred in my life that prevents me from getting one right now. But I'm not going to rant about not being able to afford the price. The price is what it is. And if I want to join the Red family I have to come up with a different plan. Or in my case I we had a family situation come up and I need to pay off some things first before I can do it. Nobody here gets a hand out. You work hard for what you get. I am working hard and need to be patient and take care of some responsibilities first. Other people are in different situations.

I drool every day and live vicariously through other people here. It fuels the fire in me to do what I have to do, to one day, be able to join the Red family. It's a dream... a passion... one of the greatest desires I've had for anything in my life. But I certainly would never expect Red to bend over backwards for me or give me special pricing. I haven't earned that right yet.

And, correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't this all boil down to someone getting upset because they haven't earned it? Instead they expect it based on whatever criteria you think you're entitled to?
.

To this guy.....

What? Guys come on... it's a simple request. Why do you see it as something that has gotten out of hand or thinking that I feel this is the be-all, end-all of cameras and I HAVE TO HAVE ONE RIGHT NOW. It's not what I'm feeling. I am intrigued with this camera, yes. I want to shoot on it just to get some experience shooting with it. Why all this push-back?

Let's pretend it is gear lust or I've worked myself up to a frenzy.. so what? What do you care what my reasons are for wanting to shoot something with this camera? I have my reasons. I'm not a newbie. I've been filming and honing my craft for years. I know what I want to see and I know what I want to test and I know why I want to do it. It's that simple.

Either you live in the Dallas area and are generous enough to help me out or you're don't. I'm not trying to test MY skills. I want to test the equipment.

Do you guys have Reds? Do you feel there is soothing flawed with them? Why are you trying to steer me away from this?

Just asking?

Cmon guys

Don't turn it ugly

Life is too short

If I were in your area I would go shoot with you

Someone hook up with Adam and shoot

Remember love of the craft in all

First off David I never said I deserved it or expected it. Plus that response in that other thread was about something completely different.
I've already said that if someone was generous enough to do this it would be a HUGE favor. And I know that. I know I don't deserve it. I just wanted to put it out there and see if anyone would take me up on it.
Gosh how did this spin out of control like this? Not what I wanted at all.

I know I'm no where near the caliber of most of you guys here which is why I never posted my website but if you guys need to see stuff I've shot here ya go.

Impressive!

Especially the endorsments.

Adam, you asked if you are out of line. You are.
If you don't have money to rent a camera I am sure you have something else (like time) for trade and you should have started with some kind of offering.
The way you have responded to people is a little stroppy too.

What's good about this thread?

Adam reached out and a few people gave constructive criticism and general advice on how to potentially make this happen. Adam's desires are not unlike many. When I'm out and abroad shooting, hell when I'm on the NAB show floor even, people see the camera and have so much desire to work with the best cameras out there. It's what it is. Some of it is gear lust, some of it is creative potential lust. All good. Most of us had that lust that led to insanity before we jumped in, though some of us are very realistic about our lustful desires :)

Business-wise for those of us who are owner/operators or rental focused we are seeing time, risk, and dollar signs. Which is very real. Especially if you are focused on ROI and making a living. And there's so many different realities on that front it blows my mind. I've learned many lessons on that front these past few years. People are voicing their criticism from that perspective, which is fine.

A couple things relating to your location Adam. If you can make it to SxSW in Austin RED had a presence there, likely will again. There's also rental houses, schools, and individuals in Dallas who have cameras. Reach out, open the conversation with them. See what can be worked out. There might be an opportunity to make a deal on your next real estate shoot even. Just have to explore options. You likely won't be shooting on say Weapon perhaps, but there's likely a Scarlet Dragon nearby or something. If you are ever in LA, NY, or Miami there are the RED Stores who not only have cameras on site for you to poke around and get familiar with, but also RED Store Crew/Bomb Squad Reps who can usually answer any questions you have. To me that would be a better first step if it was possible. Soon, when Raven is released, you'll see those in more places than you'd expect as well.

Side note yet on topic, business-wise it just makes better sense to save up and rent the camera for a day or two or three. It protects everybody involved and when you have a significant investment in gear it's very hard to "let it go for free". Especially if we are talking $25,000-$250,000 in equipment. Time is the additional expense for people. For some professionals their day rates are more than their camera packages, theirs reasons for that however. Compensation for gear, time, work, and experience is part of this industry. I think if you investigate you'll be able to find something in the realm of a Scarlet and perhaps even an Epic package that is realistically rentable for you.

Thanks man. Sorry if I've come across that way. Not my entention at all.

Thanks for that Phil.
Sorry guys. I certainly didn't mean for this to spin out of control like it did. Sorry if I lashed out. I felt some were giving advice on an unrelated topic. If I've erred on that front I apologize. I know time is valuable for everyone and it was risk to ask for such a grand favor but I took a shot and boy did it fail miserably.
I do hope one day I can become a more valued member of this forum but until then I'll continue to enjoy all your posts and images.
I wish you guys all the best and please know I did have good ententions. Lots of great advice here and I don't take it lightly.
Sorry if I pissed any of you guys off with this. But you miss 100% of the shots you don't take. I have to eat dinner now. I'll delete this post after.
Have a good evening everyone.

Adam, nice work. Shooting any of that stuff on red will look almost exactly like all that stuff. What are you shooting on now? If I were you, and you wanted to up your game, or see what different tools look like, I'd start playing with glass. There are a lot of different lenses out there, and depending on what camera you are shooting on, it may be adaptable to a whole lot of them. Also, stills glass is cheap to buy and cheap to rent. Get a couple old FD lenses on ebay. Get some funky russian lenses in m42 mount. The Mir 37mm, and the Helios 44-2 can be had for under 50 bucks and lend a totally different look to your images. Experiment with nets in front of and behind the lens. Put hairspray on a clear filter and then clean a pattern out of the center. Doing all of those things will educate you as to what different optics do and how different effects look. Shooting on a red is going to look just like what you showed here, with maybe a little more detail in the clouds.

I do pity your immortal soul for what you will suffer in the after life for helping to sell those types of homes. They are what's wrong with America ;-)

Keep shooting,

Nick

Thanks for the advice, Nick.

Dynamic range is something I fight every day. Here in Texas builders like dark floors and large windows. It's a beast to try to control. That's why I try to do most of my shooting around dawn. Mixed lighting is horrible too.

I'm shooting on a 7D right now as flat as I can using the Technicolor picture profile. It's frustrating coloring those images because of the compression. I can't push them very far at all. Of course not nearly as far as I can push an R3D.

I'm using a Tokina 11-16mm and I like that lens. It's the sharpest lens I have next to my Canon 24-70. I am anxious to explore more glass.

I feel people's responses to Adam's ask is pathetic. Redusers use to bend over backwards to help each other out. The way Adam's character is being judged solely on the content of his work. PATHETIC!

If you're referring to Nick's comment, he was definitely joking about the subject matter. Pretty much everyone in this thread is here to help Adam out, in their own capacity.

Adam.... I do feel a bit sad you are not in the U.K.... I would have spent a day shooting with you.... I'm sure there is someone on this forum in Dallas that can help Adam out..... someone here who has had someone do something for them without asking for anything in return.... Redusers are generally really nice people.... be patient Adam I'm sure someone will respond positively.

Please do not feel odd Adam.... this is not an unusual request.... people may not want to help.... or they may be a bit weary...it is the world we live in today. But I'm sure there is someone in Dallas who is on here willing to help.

To everyone here with a negative comment... just remember we all need help sometimes.
