  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I have seen the future of RED GLASS....

As soon as I am allowed to officially say something I will happily do so. In the meantime please know that there will be some new optics shown at NAB. Optics in the Abel booth and at least a couple others that I know of. There are numerous reasons why I cannot be more specific with one of them being that we do not know what will be done in time.

Your saying that the same optics that will be at your booth will also be at some other booths, correct? There seems like there will be good optics coming out for sub $35,000/set in the next few months.

No, I'm saying that there will be optics at our booth that will not be anywhere else. There will also be optics at other booths.

I have to agree with Obin about the new RED primes. I was at the RED/Adobe event as well. And despite holding a decked out Scarlet in my hands, I think I was more impressed by the prime attached to it. It feels like a really nice lens. Mechanics were quite smooth. Can't wait to use it at some point.

I heard from a birdie that there will be 4 new major lens manufacturers releasing new optics because of the huge demand that Red has put on glass. Now whether or not these optics will be shipping right away, time will tell.

Wasnt the Red prime set on target to be a nickel under $20k?

I wonder if with other vendors on the market that'd get lowered. I'd love to see a prime set (5 lenses) more in the $12-$15k range

But Shawn, you can't ask for anything more than for them to hit these ridicolously low targets. I just hope they come close...

I am guessing now that the wider end could just be under wraps, maybe something they decided to withhold to keep the competition in the dark? Then kablam, 18mm 14mm and 11mm full frame or something like that. Anyone think it might be the case?

So red prime can be actually pre-order ?

Yeah, the RED primes are supposed to be $20k. But without a wide angle lens, I think they are somewhat useless for a lot of work (at least for me)

There was also this post (http://www.reduser.net/forum/showpost.php?p=374314&postcount=36) Even if he was talking about euros and not USD, that's only $2500 to $3500 per lens, or $12,500 to $17,500 for a set of 5. Heck, if they could do 18, 25, 35, 50, 85, & 100 for $17,500 I would be very happy. I am wondering if this isn't the IBE optics though. He says they are made in Germany and IBE is out of there.... Very exciting time. With the delay of the Epic I might be able to do the purchase of a set of primes and the Epic at two different times...which would be wonderful!

I dont know i'm more excited over the lens as compare to the other announcements. I will be looking forward to the result. Obin..could u upload any pic of the test shoot ?

I've been getting a lot of calls & emails so I want to be perfectly clear here.

Abel will be showing some new optics.
At other booths there will likely also be some new optics shown.
As far as I know, NO ONE will have complete sets of new lenses ready for sale at the show or immediately after. No one.
No one has said that these new lenses will outperform the current offerings from Arri or Cooke or will be available for a fraction of the price. Well, alright, RED has kinda said their lenses will, but other than that it is all conjecture and wishful thinking on the part of members of this forum.
If you buy Cooke or Arri lenses today you will not be disappointed, and you will not regret this purchase. And you will get your lenses sooner than these other options.

- Panavision wide range of lenses

- Arri/Zeiss Master Primes

- Cooke S4s

- Angeineux Optimo zooms

there are the lenses that high budget films in Hollywood

and Europe mostly choose in their productions.

All other brands and types of lenses are chosen just because of

a certain (budget, technical or artistic) compromise in the production.

Mitch,
Thanks for setting the record straight. Someone needed to. The froth was rising....
