  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I give up

Can some one please build and release a software that actually works with r3d's. Forget all the damn bells and whistles. Quit releasing new whizz-bangs. I want the basic function of cutting and color grading. Without spending days on end trying to make a software do these basic functions. Is this too much to ask?

Assimilate Scratch. It's not cheap but I've been running it for a few weeks now and it hasn't crashed once. Rock solid. Can use my MC Color surface, Wacom tablet (with mouse). No problem and their support is amazing. Received e-mail and phone calls on the weekend to make sure I'm up and running. Awesome stuff.

A quote that Michael Cioni said during the RED Post course earlier this year was "Most problems you encounter are not technological problems, they are personal problems that are results of poor administrative decisions." To this I ask, WHAT IS your current workflow? I'm not having any problems with Raw R3D or Color anywhere in my workflow.

RCX doesn't work with 1080 25p on a mac in AVID DNX. I still have to use RCX 487 as all of the current version of PRO do not work. This has gone on for ages now and i have 2 epics and have spend a shit load of money with Red and no one cares.

The error is timecode too long. If you render the r3d's without sound they work. Its when you render the r3d's with sound you get this error.

Red claim its an Avid problem, I have contacted Avid and they say they how could it be our problem when the RED software doesn't work.

Hopefully someone doesn't ignore this post as every time I make a thread it gets ignored.

...the RED software doesn't work.

Not sure about anyone else, but, to me, these statements seem obtuse enough as to need more explanation before someone could help...

perhaps you should try to contact the support guys? i am sure they can help solve this....

I did say that the error i get from using the files is "time code is too long" and i have contacted support and they blame AViD by saying their SDK is faulty. Avid claim that is untrue.

There are many posts and threads about this

I think it may help if you elaborate on your current workflow. What software/hardware are you currently using?

Does it matter? Is anything really running smoothly? I've been on the Red bandwagon since it's inception. I've been shooting and cutting nothing but Red since. I'm glad it's been ground-breaking, I'm glad new inventions are hitting the market every day, as a result of Red. But what I really want is something solid and reliable. I was cutting FCP and Eld'ing through Clipfinder to AE fro grading. Bugs, headaches and all - but stunning results in the end. I keep trying Adobe, Premiere and After Effects, but the reinstalls, pain of porting to AE, no speed changes being carried over, slow response, and constant errors - well enough of this. I can't stand in any more.

Do I go Avid, is there a sane way of going FCP then over to Resolve, perhaps assimilate scratch, but I don't want to go offline and then online (if I have to and the transition is smooth, without all the typical hell involved with things not conforming). Is anyone really getting good results.

Why invent another handle to attach to the Epic. Someone invent something that works for post - please.

The Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Media Encoder pipeline has been working exceptionally well for me for some time now. I tend to do first light work in RedCine-X Pro. Sometimes toss timelines back and forth to export DPX or EXR. Sometimes going to Baselight, Resolve, etc... Depends on what I'm doing and who the material goes to. Most of those packages natively support .R3D these days.

I've been working with Red material for years now and things are drastically better than a few years ago. There were growing pains, but things are rather smooth for me.

What errors are you experiencing?

I am with Dale on this one.
Understand his frustration.
Up to today there is no one friendly self-contain workflow with r3d.
It's one constant workaround and going beta workflow, unless you go for the old times route, which is offline to online one.
Its 2012...
Adobe is on the right track, but Adobe is adobe and always gets high in aspirations, forgetting the basics.
I have been doing a lot of post work in the past, including public seminars for adobe products, being certified and all, setting up Technicolor with the first RED workflows, was fun back in 2008.
I don't blame Red, but ONE good solution at comfortable price point would be a blessing.
Today it still feels like 2008, nothing really works out of the box.
Redicne is great, but its only one light offline to many.
Based on lets say 1 hour project:
Avid doesn't cut it in reality, it is still proprietary system.
Final cut X is a joke ( I did try it multiple times)
Adobe lucks PRO features (really basics).
I am my self finding doing all my work back in FC 7...

We've been running R3Ds in, through, and out of the Adobe Pipeline for nearly 4 years, and it works better than almost any edit system I've ever used. Our latest PBS doc was a mix of 2K, 3K, and 4K footage, from Red One, Red One MX, and Epic, sound sync and silent, fast and slow speed, and often 3 camera multicam, and the project contained nearly 6TB of Raw footage. The entire project was cut and posted (easily and with great enjoyment) within the Adobe product line. If you aren't yet working with PPro and AE, I really feel for you.

Just looking for some clarification here as I'm confused and have used Avid, FCP, and Premiere Pro. What "PRO" features are missing in Premiere Pro? If there's something really missing, have you tried contacting them?

I'm with CK here. Nothing but good experiences here on that front.

Audio export to protools, have you tried it on a larger project?

Round trips from other finishing solutions.
timeline flow, and direct output to ref.monitor.

I did send the request.
It's not about Addobe, they are doing great things, and they are perhaps the only ones going in the right direction as far as the r3d goes.

I don't have a problem editing. I have an average pc with the adobe suite.

That's pretty much it, really, I don't see the fuss. As far as back as 2009 (Vegas Pro 9 / Premiere CS4) it was absolutely simple. There is no "workflow", there is only drag R3D on to timeline, edit, period. Export AAF/XML for finishing app (most of which support R3D just as well), OMF for sound, that's all there is to it.

Nothing has changed, hardware has become so powerful that an average mainstream PC can now handle 5K at 1/2 res, and you don't need more as the monitors max out at 2.5K.

My only complaint is the RED SDK, particularly the decompression, it simply does not scale across multiple threads very well and there seems to be some major bottleneck going past 1/2 res. Not only does it fail to use CPU cycles completely, the GPU goes to waste completely.

I am aware that GTX 285 was considered, but failed to offer significant benefits, but that was eons ago. That was a 240 CC GPU from 2008, we are now at 1536 CUDA cores with GTX 680 and a much more compute oriented architecture. GTX 780 will take that even further in half a years' time.

Subhdip,

Have you tried AMA linking from Media Composer directly to the R3D's?

Also, I suggest PMing Michael Phillips on this. If that doesn't help. I believe I know someone who can get you a definitive answer on the Avid side of this problem. But I suggest talking to Michael first.

The only workflow that works for me is RED CINE X 487. Transcode everything to DNX36 or 185x (im 25p pal) and edit on my AVID.

Then once i have the sign off I send an EDL from the AVID into Davinci and re conform there.

I then render a flat DNX-185x or 1:1RGB (Depending on output) and dump that into my Symphony for output.

This works fine, but I just get frustrated that I am using such an old version of REDCINE X and i cannot use any of the new bells an whistles in RCXPRO.

Under no circumstance should anyone try to edit using AVID AMA and R3d's. It is so slow an cumbersome and really impossible to edit.
