  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I found a monster....

This guy makes custom FD to EF conversion kits, and you can still use the manual iris ring! Not sure he can do it on this lens, but it might be worth a shot. It also only works with the newer FD mount known as FDn. The older FD mount had a silver mounting ring that makes this conversion incompatible. Which mount do you have?

Picked up one of these on eBay last week and got it today. It's in ex+ condition with original manual, case and the plastic wrapping is even still on the lens and adapter..which is crazy. Waiting for the m42-EF adpter to put it to work. Got it for $250, not bad at all :). Hope it's everything you guys say it is!

Damn, you got a great deal Dustin. I paid $450 for my mint m42 version with adaptor just a few months ago.

Used it on a Sony Commerical:

Just picked one up on eBay for $219. Thanks Tim.

Now to figure out how to mount it to EOS as it's wasn't clear to me combing through this thread.

Small question... I'm pretty sure it should be fine. Does anyone know for sure if the Tokina 90mm 2.5 macro would be compatible with the 1:1 Vivitar Extender? Say if they're both FD mounts?

Should be, it's just a tube, no optical elements.

I've got a Vivtar FD with extender if that's any use to you Josef. I'm not using it.

The 1:1 extension for the bokina actually does have optical elements to cancel out chromatic aberration. The Vivitar and Tokina versions should be optically identical aside from the coatings, though.

Beautiful shot. Was this done with the 1:1 extension? How necessary is the 1:1 extension tube?
If I had to guess, I'd say that shot was somewhere around 2:1 or 3:1. The 1:1 extension is designed primarily for situations where your subject is not moving, you can set up your camera extremely close to it and you have enough light to stop way down (or if you're taking multiple exposures for focus-stacking). For shooting people and wildlife outside of a studio environment, I find that 2:1 is more than enough magnification.

This was at roughly 3:1

Thank you Alan.

I have a Tamron SP 90mm F2.5 lens coming my way. A few people mentioned it in this thread. I did some research and really love the look of the lens. It looks to be close to par with the "Bokina" though not as trendy and thus more affordable. It comes with an Adaptall lens mount so you can use it with everything from a Nikon mount to a modern Canon EOS mount. The lens can also be converted to PL mount. What I have to decide now is if I want to do the PL mount conversion, which would make using the stock extension tube impossible, or get a Canon mount for my camera. I'm not sure which way to go right now.

Here's the lens I have coming (exactly this lens):

Great shots Ben! Do you use the 1:1 extension tube often/at all?

Thank you Alan.
