Hey guys,

Does anyone remember the old-oooollddd road map showing a medium format red? somewhere between 2015-2018?
Arri announced a 65mm Alexa, I wonder when Red will drop the gauntlet ;)

Simple answer to that:

Why not just shoot medium format?!?

The experience is still there if you really want it.

I see Bronicas On Ebay with a viewfinder & a lens for less than the price of a used 64GB redmag on reduser lol!

So nice on tranny film!

Film will never die. Just will be harder & harder to find the film. I hoard tranny film in my fridge like you wouldn't believe (much to my wife's disgust).

Which reminds me, about time I shot something with it again.

Wonder how much a Mamiya 6x7 goes on ebay for these days?

: )

That is a good price on that camera.. however, shooting medium format in motion is something different all together, and would be awesome for the right projects.

Hi Craig,
Totally, I shoot with a mamiya 645 when ever I have time.
More specifically, I was talking about a motion medium format camera, essentially a slightly bigger epic "IMAX".
Would love to play with such a thing.

Oddly when I started in the industry I was taught a weird short hand. We referred to 70mm for 15-perf IMAX jobs and 65mm for 5-perf and the extremely rare 8 and 10-perf gigs.

We had some fun CRT based Solitaire recorders that took a couple minutes per IMAX frame to film out. The gate had a vacuum function to keep the negatime flat for an even field. Heh. We even used those for high resolution 5x7" publicity stills for print media before the Internet became so sexy and common. I got a few envelopes of those that I rather cherish.

It was fairly common around the studio to use 1 or 2 65mm cans for monitor risers.

Yes sorry Ryan, motion would be great too.

There's certainly a plethora of medium format glass in the world as well. If Red introduced Mamiya, Hblad & Bronica mounts for such a camera, I can see this camera having tonnes of applications other than movies, from fashion photography to nature shooting.

Would a 65 sensor and lens mount fit in the existing epic body or redesign to the brain be required? Hopefully the former!

Ketch, current digital "65" cameras are based on film format dimensions, they aren't even close to actually having 65mm or 70mm wide sensors. "65" is just a label referring to the film format.

The Alexa 65 has a sensor that is 54.12mm x 25.58mm, the Phantom 65 has a sensor that is 51.2mm x 30.5mm, and 5-perf 65mm film is 52.48mm x 23.01mm. "65mm" and "70mm" are just referring to the outer dimensions of the strip of film.

So it's silly to say that Red should make a 70mm camera instead of a 65mm camera when both are the same size, unless you want them to actually make a sensor that is 70mm wide, in which case lenses made for "65mm" cameras wouldn't work on it.

Even a 70mm Hasselblad doesn't use a 70mm wide area and neither does any 645 cameras, not even the digital ones. "65" and "70" have always been a reference to film formats.

i also have a hunch that jim didn't go like this when the epic dragon was ready:

hey, boys and girls, let's celebrate! Epic Dragon is the best digital cinema cam conceivable, and thus we've decided to ship these bastard and then close shop! have a cigar!

OK. So... While we are in dreaming mode...
Imagine.....

"65" format camera in a new body.

With a new Mount system, wide enough to accomodate the sensor. Keep similar pixel density as Dragon (maybe even a bit less for light gulping bigger pixels), and have the new mounts as follows:

"PL" Standard PL that can work with all PL lenses, using a cropped S35 center, thats still at least 5K.

"EF, LeicaR and Nikon" wich uses a FF sized piece of the chip, potentially 8K?

Medium Format That uses the full breath and gives you all the goods. God knows how many K's.... Probably only 23.98P if that....

IMAX 65mm neg moving through the gate horizontally = 71.09mm x 52.63mm

65mm neg moving through the gate vertically = 50mm x 27mm (aspect ratio 1.85:1)

The alexa XL is three flipped amira sensors standing on the side next to each other. For red to do the same they would need to sort out the rolling shutter. But as they managed to make the dragon sensor I'm positive that they had larger sensors in mind as well. So I assume that they would have to make a new sensor all together. And even if dragon has taken a bit longer than what I think RED expected I would guess that they show something bigger quite soon. Even though I think (sadly) that they got a bit burned on showing off their work in progress stuff a bit early, possibly thats why we seen nothing yet.

Yes, though we tend to call something with a 70mm wide frame as "IMAX" or "6x7", not "70mm".

I think if Red made a sensor that was 70mm wide, they wouldn't call it "Dragon 70" for example, not if everyone else was calling sensors that were 54mm wide "65" lest people think the Dragon 70 was only 5mm wider than the sensor in an Alexa 65!

This is why either you take the stance that digital "65" and "70" are more or less the same thing, not that 70 is "bigger" than 65, or you start labeling things by the actual size, or you come up with another name than "70" if you really are going to make something much bigger than what current digital 65mm cameras are using. Because saying that Red should make a 70mm camera instead of a 65mm camera doesn't make sense. What does that actually mean??? Make a sensor that is 59mm wide instead of 54mm wide and call it "70mm" because it's 5mm wider than the sensor in a 65mm digital camera? Talk about confusing the market!

The 65mm and 70mm labels are just that, labels. They more or less mean the same thing for all practical purposes.
