  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hyundai Hybrid TVC behind the scenes with the Toias

Nice to see Joseph Hutson in the mix.

Can not wait to see the actual film. So cool to see Mark kicking it with little EF lenses and no filters on the ronin. That does not leave much of excuses for the little guys :)

As for filters, Mark has been a pro-variableND-guy for a long time and I think I spotted a motion mount in the gear...

Hi guys,

Didn't realise Jarred posted the video. Was nice of him, My son Jordan is super stoked to have his work shared. !

Regarding tools for the job, Yes... I'm a minimalist these days.
I've gone through many stages over the last 20 years of having huge camera setups breaking the backs of many a grip, The biggest cranes, the heaviest dollies, the mountains of gear we used to drag around the world for shoots was ridiculous.

However this particular project was a bit of a weird one as the budget was smaller than what we are used to when shooting Global car gigs, but we still needed to make it work, And I still wanted the big pictures.
However I didn't compromise on top level pilots, Helicopters, Edge arms , Russian arms, Scorpio heads and safety etc.. you just need that stuff when you want a lot of great stable pictures when shooting at fast highway speeds.

My days of building up big cameras to "LOOK PRO" are long gone. I'm all about the final image and it took me years to figure out that my client didn't give a shit about having huge amount of gear on set either , Because they were also frustrated with how slow heavy sets move. And how much everything cost.
In down sizing on gear and crew in some areas we could then afford to shoot in 4 different countries not 2 and still accomplish the same big shots using small camera setups.

And yes... most of my normal crew laughed at me for looking like a amateur when I pulled out the toy lens on the toy Ronan., because they normally see me with all the big toys.... but they always look with amazement when they see the final image play back.

Everyone wins. :)

On the Shotover , edge arm, Scorpio heads I use normal IR filtration.

When I shoot in Mini mode... Yes I use VND's but never push past 6 stops with them as ugly things start happening.
I use stills glass sometimes.. Only when moving really quick. But mostly PL glass.

Did I spot Joseph Hutson in there?

HA, my first thought too after, "Here he goes again" about Toia. Great work, Mark, and Jordan. Everything you said too about going lighter resonates with us all. Your comment about still vs PL also resonates. While everyone is falling all over themselves about the Raven and its price point, still lenses do have their limitations.

Have to ask a newb question, what were the stickers on the car used for? CGI?

Mark have you tested the motion mount? It´s really nice together with fool control when the camera sits mounted in hard to reach gimbals and light levels are all over the place. And also for the kind of work you do, with all the action going on, the sine wave motion blur function of the motion mount would actually make a difference.

was great to see you both in NYC, stuff looks top notch as always :) !!
I'm with you on the small, tight rigs. if the client likes what they see thats all that matters. We like to move fast as well and theres no way to do that with the big iron unless it's absolutely necessary.

Is there a link to see the final product? Couldn't find anything on the youtube.

I love the idea of the motion mount, (and yes have tested it thoroughly) I would have it fixed on a camera permanently if I could, but because I like to shoot wide open a lot.. It has issues when the aperture is wide open.

It's great for Heli or can and rig work for when getting to an ND is somewhat time consuming the motion mount is perfect in those cases.
Its mentioned in the documents when you purchase it.

Sadly the lawyers, suites and research groups ended up directing the final edit and commercial.. It's not great.

Usually I have full control of the edits and post, but when working in the US as a director, the moment you say thats a WARP, you get paid and pretty much pushed out of the final creative process.
Strange system compared to the rest of the world where the client demands you stay and finish your vision... but that's how the US advertising industry rolls. Thats life in the big city. :)

There was only one finished car in the world at the time and the client didn't want us taking it anywhere... So we shot a plug (the car with the markers on it) and then dropped our 3d car over the top of it.

Did not know that, what happens wide open?
