  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

HyperDeck Shuttle Shuttle.. Record the 5K sensor Scarlet

Instead of paying $250+ on overpriced mounting plates and brackets, I decided to fabricate my own with my dad in his basement machine shop. Made out of aluminum, this custom bracket mounts into my x Easy Riser via 4, 1/4" bolts. Let me know what you think!

Heads up guys, those SDI connectors that stick out is a bad design. My SDI In is bent and busted now. Not sure if there's a quick fix for this. Is the HDMI quality worse (image-wise) than the SDI connection? I might consider selling my HyperDeck unit at a discounted price if that's the case.

For what it's worth, I'm in exactly the same boat as Jason, interestingly enough with the exact same cable. Not sure whether I'm ready to blame the cable ouright, could certainly just be coincidence, but it's a bummer all the same. Have to take the HyperDeck out of service was a good reminder of how nice and svelte the Scarlet can be without all the pieces hanging off, but that being said, I'm very disappointed that the input connector broke so easily. Has anyone dealt with BlackMagic for repairs before? Price/turn around time?
Thanks,

-Harry

Ultimately the issue is the choice to use DIN connectors rather than full size BNC, but there could be (not saying there is necessarily) something specific about the depth of the Laird DIN connector that makes them more likely to break the connector on the BMD. If someone could manufacture a bolt on breakout from the DIN to full size BNC, we'd be in business.

Thats the biggest complaint. SOme people have gone through a couple of shuttles because of this fault.

It's the SDI input. The shielding is entirely loose. I can push it back in, but it won't permanently hold. On top of that, the thin SDI wire is bent up slightly. When I attach my cable, I no longer get the Video LED indicator on the side and my HyperDeck won't record. Maybe I'll get another cable and test that to see if that'll do the trick. I'll post pictures when I get home tonight.

HDMI and SDI have the same quality. Not sure if the trigger works through the HDMI as I don't have one.

I guess I can live without the trigger working - minor setback. Any other disadvantages I should know about? I can still record audio through HDMI right?

Jason, if I were you I wouldn't settle for only being able to use an HDMI cable and having to manually hit record. You should call BM and direct them to this thread so they are aware that there's any issue with their product.

Im pretty sure there is no triggering for the HDMI... I would stay away from the straight connecter.. Definitely get a right angle DIN connecter

Does mounting the unit incorrectly contribute to this weakness....ie exposed cabling lens side with no shielding.

Is there an optimum mount position Ie back of camera behind battery with ssd port facing upwards ?

I post some pics tomorrow of my config.. I think in the back of the cam with the ssd facing up is the best solution.

This was recorded using lookaround for 5K output to my Samurai.....the difference isn't just field of view....the noise is better (no REDcode compression and any other noise is sub-sampled even more than if it were 4K) and the detail is amazing!

Here's my setup:

@ John, Thankyou for the confirmation...I thought so.

@ Mathew IMO sweet skin colour on the talent. Is that Red gamma 3 straight out of the box or graded?

@ Jason is it just me or is your BNC port really exposed, hence your troubles...not dissing here just trying to understand. As I have a project coming up that may require a cheap pro-rez module. thanx
