Hey whats up guys,

So recently I came across Timur Civan's blogpost http://timurcivan.blogspot.com/search?q=hyperdeck about the BlackMagic HyperDeck shuttle and decided that for the price, I would pick it up.
Timur also mentioned that it might be possible to record the 5k sensor with look-around enabled but, since he has the epic now he couldn't confirm.

Well I'm pleased to confirm that you can record a clean 1080p Pro Res HQ file from the full 5K sensor with look-around enabled. You also have the option to record that signal with either RC3/RG3 or RC3/REDLOGfilm.

To enable look-around in firmware V3.3.14 go to "Settings --> Setup --> System --> Recording --> Enable Look-Around"
The only downside to having Look Around enabled is that everything on the touch screen gets really small and makes it hard to pull focus and to compose... You'll see what I mean when you enable it. You might want to monitor from a second monitor either through SDI out or HDMI out from the Shuttle to get a full view of what you are recording.

I would also recommend going SDI out from camera to SDI in to the HyperDeck Shuttle... This way you can trigger start/stop record from the camera to the shuttle.

Recording with Look Around enabled will probably be fine if you just want to use the files right out of the shuttle and finish with those files, but not ideal if you want to relink to you're R3D's.

At the the moment the shuttle does not record the pro res files with the RED naming structure. I'm pretty sure this will eventually be a firmware update. If everyone sent an email and complained BlackMagic, they might release this update sonner than later.

So how do we reconnect the files? I was searching for a few programs that would batch re-name the files to match the RED files but couldn't figure out if it was possible with the programs I tried. I came across this youtube video and followed step by step and while it's an initial pain in the ass setting up, you only have to do it once. I tried this process and it definitely works!

**** Please note if you have windows you can probably skip most of this process and just download advanced renamer *****

1. Now that you have the programs installed we need to copy the RED file names... Point to your folder where your R3D's are and press " Command A" to highlight all your .RDC folders and then " Command A" to copy"

2. Next you will need to open " Text Edit " and like the video shows in text edit preferences make sure it's set to "plain text"

3. Now with text edit open hold down " Command + Option + Shift & V " to Paste.

4. Step 3 will paste the .RDC file names to the text editor... Now in the text editor erase the ".RDC" extension

5. File save to the desktop.. name your text file whatever you want.

From here just follow the steps in the video. There might be an easier way to do this but I haven't found it. I tested this way and I know it works.

Well good luck guys... If I come across anything new, I'll update on this thread

sorry, to confirm you are still able to record 4K at 24fps onto REDMAGs but at the same time (with look-around enabled) the external recorder captures the 5K FOV? Just wanted to clarify if you are shooting REDs like normal. What if you go to higher frame rates like 2k 60fps? Does that effect the SDI out or not?

Cheers!

Hey Brad,
Yes you can still record 4k to the reds ssd at the same time. It will not be ideal because your framing will be different on the recorded 4k media since you will be framing with a 5k FOV.

Just to be clear, I tested this with two monitors.. My 5'' touch Lcd and my Marshall monitor via HDMI out of the Hyperdeck... Framing with the marshall. When only one monitor is connected the GUI of the camera defaults to the hierarchy monitor path that you have chosen in the settings. If you are only using one monitor, I don't think you can shut the GUI off and like I said earlier in my post it's weird to frame the 5k fov with the black borders of the look around shown on the main monitor.. The black borders are not seen in the second monitoring path if you choose a clean display setting.

Keep in mind this is only with look around enabled. If you are recording the 4k downscaled image you will have no worries. Just set your SDI or HDMI to clean... frame and record as usual.

As far as recording higher frame rates with the shuttle, it can only record the 23.98 signal that you are feeding it. To record higher frame rates you will need to record the vari speed footage on the Red SSD's then play it back on the camera and record the playback to the hyperdeck shuttle.. no other way around that unfortunately.

Can't you use SDI to BMS for clean feed / look around enabled for 5/4K ProRes HQ recording and then use RED HDMI set to clean feed to second monitor for 2nd monitor with no look around enabled and see in PREVIEW mode?

SDI to BMS to Full 5K recording and 2nd RED HDMI for monitoring? Maybe not possible...

Thanks !

It looks similar to my way or renaming but I have a script who copy the filenames without the .RDC :

I select all my .RDC folders, then I use this modified script thanks to Stefan Klieme :

https://www.dropbox.com/s/a4jwq20abc50yyx/Get%20multiple%20filename%20-.RDC.scpt?m

then I paste it in the Mac software "Name Mangler" : http://manytricks.com/namemangler/ using the "Apply Terms List" option...

Big Question, could someone point me where can I find a cheap D-Tap/P-Tap cable to power the Shuttle ?
THANKS !

Cheers !

No you can't... once you enable look around, it's enabled for the SDI and for the HDMI unfortunately.

Aweosme Quentin, thank you!.. I'll try it as soon as get a chance.

As far as a cheap D-Tap solution, I have this one here in the link and it works. Please check the voltage from your power source that it does not exceed 16v.

Hey guys,

Just want to udate this thread with some good news. Quentin Devillers posted the script and program below and just wanted to share that it works great. The only downside to the
"name mangler" program is that it's not free. I believe the program costs $19 but they have a introductory sale going on for $10 bucks. I purchased the app and it's
definitely worth it.

For those of you who are downloading the program, there are two versions of the program "ver2 and ver3" version 3 being the updated program. A few things changed as this was there first major update in a few years.

For those of you with version 2

1. First select the ".RDC" folders that you want to rename.

2. With the files selected, run the Script below and in the Script Editor click the "Run" button. You wont really notice anything happen but it has copied the selected ".RDC" file names without the .RDC extension. Awesome Script thanks to Stefan Klieme and to Quentin for posting it!

3. Hop into Name Mangler.. Drag and drop the .mov files created by the HyperDeck shuttle into the drop area.

4. On the top left of Mangler there is a drop down menu.. Choose "Apply Terms List" option

5. on the the right hand side, in the "Terms list" box, Edit & Paste or command V.. The file names will appear.

6. Click on the rename button... voila' All these steps can be done in under 1 minute!

For those of you with version 3

Follow steps 1-3 above.

4. On the right in the drop down menu choose "Sequence"

5. Under sequence there is a drop down menu for "format" in the drop down choose "Arbitrary Terms"

6. In the "Terms" box Edit & Paste or command V.. The file names will appear.

7. At the bottom right click on "Rename"

If you don't want to pay for NameMangler the other program "namechanger" will still work with the Script only it takes a few more steps.

Special thanks to Quentin for being so patient with me and helping me figure this out via PM!

So I just received my HDS and to my disappointment I think I got the wrong cable:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ...ories_PA_BNC_F_DIN_1FH_BNC_FEMALE_to_DIN.html
Should I have gotten a male BNC to DIN cable instead of female? If so, I can't seem to find this version on B&H's website. Do they make these or do I need to get a male BNC to male BNC adapter?
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/134151-REG/Comprehensive_BP_BL_BPBL_Male_BNC_to.html

If someone could clarify this that'd be great.

Mike

Shit you are right.. Looking closer you did get the wrong one.. The last one you linked is the one I have

Yeah that's what I figured. John, I know you said you are mounting your HDS on rods via cheese plate, but how would i mount it vertically on the smart side of the camera without rails? It looks like Timur is doing this based on the second photo in his blog write up.

Im really not sure what mounting bracket Timur is using.. You could get a v-lock kit. Not cheap, but a quick and easy way to take it off and on.

Anyone have any sample footage of 5k look around from Scarlet X recorded at 1080p from the hyperdeck shuttle 2?
Donnie I'll try to shoot a sample shot later with it on and off.

Hey Donnie,

Here's a quick sample screen grab "nothing fancy" The first one is the 4k field of view with an 85mm and the second is the 5k fov with look around enabled 85mm.
Notice how much more of the sensor you are actually capturing with look around enabled
