  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

HYDROGEN preorders...

Arthur C Clark came up with the idea of communications satellites, and the Russians launched the first satellite. NASA used to get science fiction writers together to give them ideas. REALLY Cool! Lots of great ideas forwards (or/and sideways, depends). People are funny. I saw an electronic kit in a store once, it had this big ring, and I joked to the sales woman, it looks like a star gate. Then she enthusiastically started telling the other ashes men hey look this guy is going to make a Stargate out of it. How embarrassing. She wasn't dumb (which made it even more dumb founding she would misinterpret and think that) but people are easily impressed when they want.

So awkward afternoon and night last night. But things have picked up.

What they are getting up to. I don't care. I mean if it is technical and to the benefit of society, I do, or putting somebodies ashes up.

Now, Eric. What did I get right? I can't remember.

The phone satellite network you mentioned, has been up since 1997.

But seriously, that full coverage image satellite network thing so mentioned can be used to track the patterns of wild life and nature conservation, and pests for hunting. You could make it recognise different species, automatically, there behaviours and interaction with other species and form theories of their behaviour. You can find unknown sources and interactions between species etc etc.

Maybe something for the Hydrogen network?

^^^Check out Jarred's IG page.

Seems something special on board... Did someone light this candle yet?

Maybe they did... No footage?

^^^Launch manifest.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

So IRIDIUM 5 satellite phone communications satellite was just launched from Vandenberg AFB. Launched 3/30/2018

So Iridium have launched several satellites already...

Who is IRIDIUM ?

___

When you start googling about...

https://satellitephonestore.com/catalog/phones-terminals/iridium

Satellite phone systems... Or a mobile phone that communicates to satellites... Presumably when you are in extreme remote locations ...

Can the H1 do that ;-) Or is there a Satellite module for H1 ?

This could be really incredible. Imagine a live 3D stream of our glorious planet with part of the satellite in the foreground for perspective. It will be just like being there. It's that life changing view that has been seen by so few, suddenly available to everyone ...with a Hydrogen One. Brilliant.

HMMMM!

L-Band is the 1-2 GHz spectrum, but I have no idea what it is used for. I'm an old C-Band guy.

Very interesting:

"Incorporation of Earth imaging and other secondary payloads - thereby providing additional functionality to further utilise the satellites."

If one were to put a RED camera in space, it would also make sense to use one with the least amount of power requirements. But what's the advantage of a 3D camera from that distance, apart from having some part of the "bird" in the frame?

In Photogrammetry and Ariel photogrammetry and satellite imaging that sequences of stereograms are taken... I.e. overlapping photos from a single camera. The overlap between neighboring left and right photos in a sequence create a stereogram. There is a flight path and not sure on the exact orbit and altitude but the satellite is probably moving about 17 Km/s so successive stereograms are possible from a monoscopic camera with a single lens . (Very simple / crude explanation). Using photogrammetric techniques as well a camera calibration methods, it is possible to determine the position and orientation and perspective center for each frame and then in the overlap for corresponding points determine the three dimensional position of each corresponding point pair. From that you can build 3d models or re-sample the stereograms (for better viewing) or use the model to create what is called an Othrophoto... Or register it to different types of projections or UTM coordinates or the "Word Geoid" depending on what you are doing.

A lot of people are not aware that photographs are not planimetrically(sp) correct... I.e. a photo is not a map as photographs suffer from what is called 'Relief displacement" I.e. recorded features radially displace outwards from the "centre " of the photograph . Imagine shooting New York skyscrapers shooting directly downwards... The tops of the sky scrapers are radially displace outwards with reference to the base or street level of the skyscrapers. So there are a number of ways to correct photographs so they "Behave" like cartographic maps.

This is a huge subject, but Earths Atmosphere is very three dimensional and so are the borealis effects and even shadows cast on the land by clouds etc... AND even lightening sprites (forks of glowing lightening forks that project upwards above the clouds with weird effects above the clouds in opposition to lightening strikes below the clouds). Various effects in the ocean should also be visible with interaction with various atmospheric layers too.

I have never been up to space but one day I hope to (probably when I am very old). So I'm not sure how 3d and depth like the view from space is but I know from AERIAL and satellite imagery there is certainly a fair amount of 3d data to be had.

One of the things I love about 3d and metrically accurate data is that ALL such data types can be integrated into massive cohesive data set or data base. One that can be view or interrogated. This is much like GIS and digital photogrammetric systems or even flavors of Google Earth.

________________________________________________________________________

Footnote: Satellites don't actually fly in the ways people think in terms of position and attitude. Ground control points of opne sort or another can also be helpful for adjusting "Blocks" and strips of stereographic sequences.

Satellite_frequency_bands_large.jpg

L-Band... used to be used for mainly for data and digital telephony + additional headroom for telemetry. Not sure what Iridium Next is doing specifically.

@John Doyle, When you mean C-Band do you mean Citizen's band or do you mean military C-band / radar etc. like NATO...

Or more generic SPIEE type definition ?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C_band_(IEEE)

What "band" did the nobel prize winners use for discovering the aftershock of the "Big Bang"/ microwave back ground radiation. (I think it was very broadband for microwaves)...

____________________________________________________________________________

I admit my research is pretty cursory and sloppy and more about excitement ! (At this stage) but some of those payloads seemed geared towards air traffic control systems , but who knows maybe drones and flying cars one day... Or different entertainment options for air passengers ? (Shruggging shoulders)

____________________________________________________________________________

There are also micro satellites that may also be part of that payload to hitch a ride too maybe...

But I have always felt there would a HYDROGEN capability where you could be anywhere in the world and still stream and up load one's imagery etc.

This also plugs into Jim Jannard's sentiments of "Time and Space"... Massive georeferenced three dimensional data base for HYDROGEN.

Maybe? :-)

I totally agree... I have always wanted to go "Up there" but to bring it back down would be amazing.

There is a NASA Channel that does have a lot of live feeds from the ISS but UHD or 3d/ H4v could really be something else!

Yup that's the point the HW has value and they have about 60 or 70 satellites up there. They even went out of business once and a new company was formed ... So on Elon Musk's Falcon 9 manifest IRIDIUM 4 was just launched on March 30th 2018... And Jarred lands picture looks like a grubby/ re-used Flacon 9 being launched from Vandenberg Or maybe Cape Canaveral... A bit of photo research would yield an answer to that.

^^^ Totally agree, so maybe the newer IRIDIUM NEXT satellites have way more bandwidth and direct access? (Haven't done my research on that).

I saw an electronic kit in a store once, it had this big ring,

Was that a Tesla coil by any chance :-)

Your not far off though there is weird project at NASA (odd side lab) that has what looks like a Tesla coil on its side and they are doing very subtle experiments on the notion of a Warp Drive... So not too far off... (Who knows if they warped any space at all beyond naturally warped Space-Time as result of "Mass".

Star Gate... 2001 Space Odyssey/ Arthur Clarke (once again)... That Stargate show on TV was kinda fun for a few seasons too, recently watched just for useless binge watching "Time Keepers" (kinda fun premise)...

I wonder if RED dimensionalized the 2001 Star Gate Sequence... Would be perfect for LEIA light effects...

_______________________________________________________________________________________________

Can't believe I have invested so much time planning and future planning and thought on something I have yet to see in person! I hope it IS as good as Jim Jannard says it is... Leap of faith here (fingers crossed it looks mighty fine).

@John Doyle, When you mean C-Band do you mean Citizen's band or do you mean military C-band / radar etc. like NATO...

I think both of those are radio bands. The C-Band satellite spectrum is higher frequency and was used for analog video feeds. I used C as well as Ku satellite for backhauling A/V signals for a live event webcast company I worked with in the early days of streaming video. C-Band has quite a history and there used to be all sorts of unencrypted signals we could pull down for testing but it started to die down as things moved to Ku. In the end it came down to NASA TV and an evangelical preacher out of Los Angeles. Good times! (but Not as cool as Nato)

Eric. I don't remember what that ring was
But the guys at NASA are wasting budget dollars with a Tesla coil I think. The calculations on the energy required to establish a startrek like warp field were done long ago, and astronomical, literally. So you need to figure out how to do warping differently, like I've done.

About the bandwidth for establishing a wildlife mapping satellite network, see my previous post weeks ago. They don't have such a network, but these low earth orbit networks are perfect for putting a camera in to use unused bandwidth for such a thing. The amounts of sstelities needed for continuous live multi angle video feed (in 3D) is a lot (I did the calculations back then). The datasets excessive. If these organisations had enough sense they would piggyback this functionality with low earth orbit communications, and keep partitioned (to stop hacking and unintended use). So say a conservation efforts wanted to do it, but it costs tens of billions of dollars and they dont want to, they could make it into a telecommunications satellite array, and then make it pay its way. Simple enough, but most people don't think like that. Now, let's step back, say your President, Donald Trump, orders a advanced network to be made by the US government, they get global communications, internet, and wild life and ecology mapping as well as standard commercial imaging) in one network, bringing even a trillion dollars annually into the United states and treasury combined. Well, as the rate of money changing hands and getting retaxed
flies around, it might be much more than a trillion. Budget crises overted. All this stuff about private governance of government holds back society and is simply a result of governments too slack and lazt to do it better themselves. A clean out of the swamp of compromised government is needed.

Now, however, you don't need that many satellites to get traveling live video feed multi angle 3D. You can simply use 2 or more micro satellites in a polar orbit to cover ground each day in strips. Now the data is covering (I forget my calculations but X hundreds of kilometres strips per day). This also includes wide cibstelkatijbs, but that stuffs up the orbital flight path. Teathering might be possible with the sort of technology they want to use for space cranes (also done current generation maybe).

Now, which ever case, a lot of data. Now, telling the satellite to map out urban areas and waves, you cut down a lot of data. But with that processing technology I'm looking at, you can basically exclude all people from the feed but only include footage of animals and plants and areas you are interested in, illegal acts, or unexpected species and placement. Now, you can maybe get rid of 99% of the data coming back to earth. These are completely viable things. It is a matter of getting the technology together, such as next generation technology from next generation computer area. But these are the things you plan today to launch in 10 years time, even starting in 5 years when done if this tech should be able. But just 2 micro satellites is majorly affordable.

Now, I'll have to leave resolution fur another post.

I think some of us here are picking up different bits of information and making something out of them which doesn't exist!

The SpaceX Falcon 9 is a resupply mission to the ISS. It may very well have RED cameras on board to capture some footage in 8k (or more?) but I doubt it's got anything to do with the H1 project. It would be nice to think maybe they're giving the ISS crew a Hydrogen each to play with, but that's as speculative as I'm going to get with this

Iridium is a network of satellites used for all sorts of things but mainly know for satellite phones, which work on L Band (around 1.6GHz). H1 won't have those capabilities on board. Maybe a module is possible but Sat phones are quite specialised and the per minute cost and bandwidth available would preclude them from the mass market. Comms satellites generally use the K bands for up/down links as they need to haul time-sensitive data on the whole.

L Band is also used for all sorts of ground-based data and video links. I have a couple of digital wireless camera links which work on L Band. You can get better range with them than the more common 2.4GHz links.

C Band in the (4-5 GHz region especially) is being used more now for CCTV and wireless video links as S Band is very crowded with licensed and license-free channels being used for all sorts of consumer and pro video and data links.

I'm watching the Dragon capsule live now as it approaches the ISS. Here's the view right now from the control panel in the ISS used to track it's approach to the robotic arm (bottom of the picture) which will grab it and guide it in to dock.

So we think there's some 'RED' onboard the astronauts will be able to get their hands on very soon?

Getting very close now...

Ok back again. Eric. When Skylab came down, NASA was showing computer enhanced photos of it's rivets, showing the rim around the holes, from nemory. This was from the Hawian observatory. Another special forces friend of mine was involved in a mission decades ago where they had satellite video imagery of the location. My telescope mechanism is meant to be able to do extreme detail. But Earth satellites only need to use a technique called lucky imaging, which is simpler than what I wanted. You just keep taking photos until the atmosphere smooths out to less distortion. So combined with adaptive optics that should be suitable, then you do the Nasa like processing.

@John Chambers... That's beautiful thanks for posting that ... Love that Arm that the Canadians built...

I don't have cable at my Ranch in NM right now maybe I find it on line... [I need to sell this Ranch So I can "finish" our SW lol/not lol !].

I know the ISS is about 200 miles up... And Geostationary is actually very far away (much further than most people suppose) Just wondering what the lowest sustainable orbit would be.

Funny my mum gave me a photographic book of shots of Earth and a composite diary of the British Astronaut's (Tim Peak) extended mission on the ISS (26 weeks and 3 days, 23 hours).

Interesting account of what cameras and lenses they got to use on the ISS.

So you can free view these popcorn emoticons as a dynamic stereogram____ ^^^^ LOL (it works if you scale your magnification for the web page 150% too. ).

So the popcorn eating emoticon appears at a depth into the screen in three dimensions even though our pop corn eating friend is flat him self but at a discernable depth (need more coffee),,,

Are you saying that Astronauts have H1's with Prosumer modules on them ? (maybe? / perhaps)... [Personally regular H1's would be awesome on the ISS , to give a sense of what it's like living and working in space].

We still have to see a shot of an H1 in a mirror showing simultaneously front and back (scratching chin emoticon)...

I agree with you. It would be a nice update/tease to see a shot of the H1 in a mirror showing the back and front of the device. It essentially wouldn't reveal any details that would violate any partnerships of RED. So it would be a harmless update and build anticipation for the month of April.
