  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

HYDROGEN hands on video from MKBHD

Those YouTube comments are poison. What the hell is wrong with people?

I think I get it, it will look like you are looking through a window at an image inside that is 3-D, like looking through the glass doors to a building and seeing the lobby inside. The 3-D world is deep to the surface of the phone, not projected above it. As you move the phone around, the image changes giving different vantage points of the same structures. Clever!

exactly. that's my theory and i'm stickin' to it. i think it should be fairly easy to generate fully 3d generated imagery at least, and that should lend itself to some cool digital art. virtual reality should be really awesome with this device.

You can generate .h4v (holographic 4-View) by shooting 4 cameras (we are building solutions from consumer to professional), or by converting 3D to .h4v (very easy), or converting 2D to 3D (very hard) and then to .h4v.

Jim,
Will the added modules like the lens options be available at launch or at a later date?

BTW, did I read that it could also serve as a wireless video display for our Helium or was I dreaming?

looking forward to getting my hands on ours!!

thanks, Greg

So is that 2 phones (each with two lenses) or 4 phones required for 4-view shooting? And is it 4 phones for shooting 4-view, or could you just use 4 RED cine cameras?

Thanks!

This is a sentence I never thought I'd read...

(Ordered btw).

I like the idea of the dedicated Record button on the side.
No sarcasm, we need to be able to record the police instantly, without too many button presses and swipes.

Interesting comment. Though maybe the police should have these as their new badge cams. At least they would be more dependable than current..

Red is just bad ass! Cameras now phones and I love to see new things from you guys and I just watched return of the Raven video but now you can buy it from Apple. Crazy stuff =)

Really just hoping this is the ultimate monitor, gyro for stabilization, 3d scanning module, module that leapfrogs the RED even further...

Tried to get friends to order but try telling people a phone takes holograms...

I hope someone is already working on the speedbooster.

Just Amazing, it feels like I will have a red one in my pocket soon! I btw have most my content in 4k top/bottom but I can convert to other 3d formats. If there was a preferred 3D format for .h4v would be nice to know ;)

What Jim is stating is they are coming up with solutions at multiple levels/price points/image quality tiers likely. I suspect there will be a few ways to actually shot .H4V and he's already hinting that 3D can be converted fairly easily, so there are some nuggets in there you can deduce something from.

I also think there will be ways to capture this sort of footage with a single device, but hell, that's just me thinking out loud.

If we can shoot h4v with 4 Hydrogens (for perhaps a better hologram than converting from fewer cameras) I'm curious what the spread will be. I'm thinking a red dot laser on each camera (like used for aiming a gun) to get your focal points.

Third party folk need to be alerted to the possibility of building a frame for an array of Hydrogens to facilitate shooting h4v.

Can't wait to learn how the h4v will display. Will we be able to send the hologram out from our unit to a screen or projector? Will we only be able to see it on a Hydrogen unit? Will RED build a large screen unit that mimics the small Hydrogen screen?

I can see this as useful to use at conventions, fairs, etc. to present a product to passersby as well as for feature content. I just don't ken how exhibition of the hologram side of things will occur.

I know we are probably at ground zero + maybe 10 and the teenage stage won't occur before + 100 (which is less than 4 exponential doublings) but having a futurist roadmap of where this is going would be comforting.

so not sure if this was left out on purpose in an earlier statement someone pointed out to me, that it could be used as a monitor on weapons, scarlets and epics, but no mention of raven?
how would having a raven make a difference or was that just a misspeak somewhere.
i would think the bigger market would be for people with ravens, especially on drones and gimbals...also because i have one :)

i still dont see the phone possibilities, like ive said earlier with android, their OS is so bad, ive now changed even all my home tvs from sony to lg because i would wake up with another error message weekly on my screen, then an update a month later to fix that error, then another error. when i researched and talked to technicians basically they all hate android OS (for TVs). then for phones, for contacts, sharing ical, etc, are the standard in production.
but as well, i dont see how you can use this as a tool on set, a monitor, or an extra camera, and still be getting calls and texts.
im sticking to it as a tool, and hey if i can watch some content on it while traveling, cool!

anyway, better work with a raven!!!

Shit made me laugh.

I know man, its like saying "I hope it can make phone calls."

Cant wait to put Panavision glass on this... Ha ha ha.

About the EF discussion...

Not silly, but consider that the flange focal distance for EF lenses is 44mm.
And we do not yet know exactly what the sensor size will be in Hydrogen.

This also affects ones choice between Al and Ti as weight / stress factors for module/lens attachment.
