  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

HP 820 Tower - RED EDITION

Not a dongle.. It is a usb key with the drivers on it .

I refuse to use anything with a Dongle... I wont do it. refuse. I passionately am opposed to even the concept. If for some reason I am not paying attention and RED ever releases something that requires a dongle.. feel free to drive to the studio and shoot me in the back of the head :)

Fair enough! Hehehe

Yeah those dongles drove me nuts when I used to work as an Inferno artist. It would expire during the worst times and take forever to show up. Im pretty sure if I ever showed up with a gun Jarred, you would be praying it had an expired dongle. Ha ha.

Gravy, is the Fusion ioFX something that would theoretically work with a 2 slot Thunderbolt enclosure/chassis (with a Rocket)? The firepower of these HP's sound nice but I'm stuck with a rigged up Macbook Pro for now.

It could work but it wouldn't work as well as it would inside a desktop machine and the heat with both cards inside the enclosure would probably fry your Rocket at the very least. Two years from now, you will likely have exactly what you want, but definitely not today.

I like the dongle. I'm moving from ScratchLAB to Resolve because of the dongle (well, one of the reasons). ScratchLAB=$5000+$1000/yr service contract. If I want to use it on my desktop in my home office as well as my on-set system I have to double the cost of the software and double the cost of the service contract. With Resolve I just take my dongle with me and plug it into any machine I want to work from.

1. HP does break SSDs and other things through BIOS whitelisting on their computers so that you can only use their parts and it protects their profits. From a support standpoint it does make some sense even though it sucks donkey balls. Don't ask me for any specifics about this machine because they keep stuff to themselves but this is how they choose to do things now (they have been doing it for the past several years) and the only way around it is to break down the BIOS and compile a new one that does not restrict your choice of hardware components.

Just wanted to address this one again. Some of the HP guys are reading these posts and they assured me this is completely false. I think it struck a nerve too. Not to mention that in all the HP products I've owned and/or worked on, I've never seen evidence of any such practice. Given my issues and the similar behavior across the non-working SSD's, I can see where it would be easy for people to jump to such conclusions rather than vigilantly seeking a solution.

That said, some progress is being made in regards to the SSD issue. I'll have a report once I feel it's fully resolved. The response from HP thus far has been great!

Thanks for the update Jeff.

There are way better ways to deal with that now.

SSD update...

Turned out to be far less drama than expected. All appears to be well now. HP guys were very responsive, but in the end they were a bit stumped as to what the problem could have been without getting their hands on the hardware for diagnosis -- something I was planning to do in the next few days. However, as luck falls, they released the v1.08 firmware update for the Z820 and clearing the CMOS along with flashing the new BIOS cured the issue. I was up and running with the Samsung 830 SSD immediately after that and I spent the better part of yesterday morning testing it. I then did a fresh system install onto the OCZ Vertex 4 and it works great as well. I'm sticking with the OCZ... Same read times between the two, the OCZ is about 100MB/s faster on writes. The Samsung has proven reliability, the OCZ is newer, but I'm going for it.

IN the midst of the firmware update and everything else I did hear back regarding some of the info I sent to OCZ. It seems that one of the predominant theories there, and where they have seen the same behavior before, is with SATA power management, or a problem with the power management. I'm going to suggest it to the guys at HP tomorrow when I talk to them again, but it's possible that the release firmware from April for the Z820 has a bug in the SATA power management. Having it enabled or disabled didn't seem to make a difference and it seems that the log file from the Vertex4 was showing improper or missing wake or status instructions. The issue may be moot as it seems to be completely resolved with the updated firmware.

Glad to hear that, Jeff.
Keep up the great work!!

BTW, the release notes of BIOS v1.08 don't mention anything relating to SATA power in AHCI/RAID mode.

Yeah, I know... Not sure if it has anything to do with power or not. Could be something screwy with the system or one of those fluke things. I had pulled all the extra stuff, including drives, disabled the SAS controller, etc.. cleared the CMOS, re-flashed the BIOS, etc.. all more than once and to no avail. First time I load the new v1.08 firmware it all worked again. :)

I want to flash back to the v1.02 BIOS and see if things work or if they're broken again with the old firmware. OTOH, I'm not sure if I want to tempt disaster and probably best to just be glad it works and move on.

Sounds like Epic isn't the only Big Macheen that relies on firmware updates to make it howl. '-)

Heh heh heh the Fusion is pretty quick. I put it in a 4x slot just because that was the slot that was readily available.. and its reading just below a GB/s.

Hi Jarred,

Just curious what the benefits of the Fusion are, compared to a setup like this?

Just a Raid card with 8 SSDs, and you can get 3GB/s, and yet even more capacity. (Although perhaps bulkier)

I am using a cheap Highpoint 2720, and with 2 SSD's get about 900mb/s.

I don't see it, but want to understand.

what ssd are you using?

thanks,

If you were asking me, I'm simply running 2 x Vertex3's. As their SEQ read/write speeds, i thought, were more important, than say spending extra for Vertex 4.

But I'm getting more soon.
