  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

HP 820 Tower - RED EDITION

I am starting to realize that Apple has a new place.. a very good place, handeling the majority of our non-professional daily tasks like email etc. That is the market they have switched over to go after, and there is no problem with that. I still use apple stuff for the light stuff.. it is much, much better at that than windows. But the heavy stuff.. you can't even compare the 2 anymore.

I know what you mean... I just installed new 'intelligent' thermostats designed by an ex-Apple guy, the guy who designed the iPod and iPhone... the only thing missing is an Apple logo!

Now if this thing starts calling me 'Dave' it gets ripped out by the roots!

As for the HP box... played with it at Reducation NYC... waiting to see if anyone makes a Hackintosh of it :-)

if it makes you feel better for the future... these 820's that Jim and I are using in our office right now we are using in resolutions above anything that Apple even supports.. so as of right now, Apple is not even an option on the table, purely because Apple can not drive single screens with the kind of resolution that we are using.

OK now I'm intrigued... would this be the prototype RED 4K display? ;-)

Mike, the comment wasn't aimed at anyone, just an observation about the status quo in computerville. There are two camps, or if you will, the Red states and the Blue states. Then there are the Tea Party folks, lauding the Linux. Seems like we should have come farther along than we are at present. "Can't we all just get along?"

Fair enough. There again, "status quo in computerville" is a very tenuous commodity. Hopefully, if PCs run away with the pro market, Apple will wake up. I'd hate to lose their competition as it's good for everyone. In that sense, I hope we don't all "get along" and that we maintain the competitive one-upmanship that gives us great advances in computing power. The problem with Apple is they appear to be letting their pro market fester.

Is there any chance for internal redmag-readers in RED's store? They would fit nicely into my workstation. :)

This is great. I love to see this type of thing.

Question: How does the Nvidia Quadro 5000 card compare to something like the new EVGA GTX 680 4G FTW card?

I agree... this tower would be best if it has at least 2 eSATA ports, or more.

But won't this remove some of the very advantages the PC OS offers with the GPUs..? (Just a question; I'm no Hankintosh expert.)

You need professional tools like Nvidia Mosaic... which kicks ass and is included with every PC Nvidia Quadro card, but Apple cares not to support, even in the Apple Quadro for Mac card.

Yes, agreed. Apple's posture is really odd, very big company-ish. Not fleet of foot, but bloated and slow to respond.

That's just drool-worthy!... but I have too many RED accessories to buy before this one becomes priority. But I'll certainly keep thinking about the time when it reaches top priority.

EDIT: Stick a PCIe drive or two in this baby and you're talking pico seconds rather than nanoseconds transfer speeds! (Well, euphemistically speaking)

Yeah, towers have often been updated/announced in January. I have a feeling January will be it. But honestly, I'm working on a MP1.1 from 2006 and doing just fine. Yeah I don't get real time bla bla, but I still get the job done. I roll my eyes at the guys rocking a 2010 and screaming they NEED a new MacPro to function. Excuses excuses...

What about the guys with a 2008 Mac Pro? Should they pay top dollar for what is basically a 2+ year old Mac Pro that Apple sells as new?

Always nice to be back with friends

Always nice to be back with friends

Been busy which is always good. Nice to come back and catch up with everything and everybody.... and some topics never change!
Jarred as always thanks for the latest and greatest info and products. It is nice to be away for a while to gain perspective to some degree. We have approximately ten maxed-out Mac desktops in our facility three servers and three laps. We too have been part of the wait and see crowd with Mac. Speed used to be a priority for us and I admit that BUT we are a clever bunch and we try to make do by being sure our processes are efficient and that includes our administration. As we are in a corporate enviroment our enterprize systems are all Windows based so we live in both worlds. I would have bet that by now there would have been only one true OS left but who knew that Mac would go big on gadgets. How could anyone fault Mac for following the money and not listening to the town cryer's? I find it humorous that Mac folks feel that Mac is obligated to continue with a product that they are clearly signaling is done for Apple. (note: "for Apple").

Jarred thanks for "not waiting" and also providing the reasoning behind Red's direction on this. When it comes to our five year bussiness plan I always take into consideration where you are taking us with your product offering. This is not a low cost venture and sometimes seems more like an adventure but the journey is much less troublesome when you have a strong vocal leader with a solid track record, a love for the industry, and of course one who actually takes the time to communicate with us. As for our corporate Windows enterprize systems.... it is all HP so the tech support team will be happy now when we migrate : )

Cheers!

Everyone keeps saying Apple is abandoning pros. Yes, they screwed up big time with FCPX, but they've been adding almost only pro features ever since and more pro features that pros have been asking for are still to come.

And look at what's available for Apple to do with the Mac Pro. Not much. The current crop of new Mac Pro-eligible processors aren't that much better than what Apple is offering. The right processors will come out early next year. This HP tower doesn't have Thunderbolt. That's huge when you have to work with external storage. Twice as fast as USB3 and daisy-chainable. Apple will come out with a new concept for the Mac Pro next year. It will be smaller, have the latest processors that come out at that time, USB3, Thunderbolt, etc. The only thing we really need Apple to do is start supporting more and better graphics cards, and they seem to be on the right track with bringing Nvidia GPU's back on the new Macbook Pros. Just be patient.

Apple will first release a thunderbolt retina display before a major upgrade of the mac pro lands. Retina production is picking up speed and the larger screens will be updated in due time. Imagine a 27" thunderbolt retina display with a native resolution of 5120 x 2880. And by then 4k GPU cards will have had more time to evolve.

I would expect Retina Thunderbolt Cinema Displays to come with the new Mac Pros, not before. Not much other reason to release them before since they'll need new graphics cards with GPUs that can output the resolution, and with Mini Display Ports or Thunderbolt Ports on those graphics cards.

I don't think the PC world (remember, Mac is from one company who now makes computers as their secondary or even tertiary business... PC is many large companies who make computers as their primary business) will be setting on their hands. There could be more innovations in putting together top-rated machines from the very competitive PC market. Apple allows no competitors in its version of the computer, so isn't as hard-pressed to guard its niche, which spreads to a much wider audience than Mac users on Reduser.

The partnership between Red, HP, and Adobe may just be the first shot fired in an upcoming burst of extreme performance... at a very nice price.

...First Final Cut X now the Pro Mac
Apple must get the message soon or else they will loose a complete market segment.
My 2 Cents..
Sadly it is about 2 Cents, so you get the picture :)

I have been such a big Mac supporter for the last decade of my life but the writing on the wall is so obvious. They just do not care about the professional market. I have been running Linux on my Mac as of late and I would love to see Adobe and some other some applications run on it as well. So much already exists on Linux like Smoke, Flame and Resolve already. I'm interested to see what Lightworks will be like if it ever comes out on Linux. I'm also tempted to drop my iPhone when my contract is up.

Jarred you have stoked the fires of making me want to start an Apple-bashing flamewar. I will be strong. For now.

I dont know why, but I laughed at this post lol.

This HP does look awesome, and it is good to see RED teaming up with the likes of HP to tailor make some NLEs.

I love Apple, but they are focusing hardcore on the consumer side, and with 100 billion + in cash, its hard to argue against from a business standpoint lol

Looks pretty cool but, Jarred, you've clearly joined the corporate masses on the Window/PC side. :-( Hopefully you're not lost forever.

JIM, YOU'RE A MAC GUY, PLEASE COME TO OUR RESCUE - CALL TIM COOK, NOW!! :yesnod:
