How to Transfer only the XML Related R3D Raw files to New Storage?

Recently I was given a project of approximately 500GB worth of R3D files which was edited into a music video by FCP via ProRes444. I have the r3D files, the ProRes444 Transcodes, the XML and EDLl. What I want to do is transfer over to my hard drive all the R3D files that are used for the music video. However, there are something like 300 clips, when all I want are the clips that are actually used in the music video, which comes to only 75.

Is there a way by using the metadata within the XML or EDL to transfer only the R3D selects to my hard drive via DaVinci Resolve or FCP/FCPX or Premiere Pro? I don't even mind if they're trimmed or not, I would rather only transfer over 75 clips, which is about 200GB worth of footage, than 500GB of footage, as opposed to having to manual sort through each individual file to find the right source for each individual clip.

What is the workflow for this?

bring XML to red cine x p and then use the "trim r3d" in export and export all clips in timeline. that will leave you with only the offline used footage in a folder, goes quite rapidly. You can also set how much tails on each clip you want.

I tried this yesterday and found that Resolve did in fact generate new R3D files. However it seemed that Resolve would look at the clips used and start to generate the new clip from the in point of the first clip used and end at the out of the last section of that clip in the cut. Meaning if I used shot A four times in the cut (music video type shoot with long takes and many different shots) it would start at the first clip used from shot A and end with the last clip of shot A. So instead of a 20gb file it would be 9gb lets say.

What I am looking for is a way to trim the R3D files so that all the clips are discreet when I bring them into Resolve 9. Was able to get halfway there with Redcine-X, however I am unable to find the FCP XML that should be generated from the trim function, relinking to the new trimmed files. When I select a clip in the sequence that was trimmed it is still pointing back to the original R3D. Anyone know how I can find the FCP XML form Redcine :)

I could be totally misreading your intended goal, but it sounds like you're just needing the media clips to be discreet in mediapool.

You don't necessarily need trimmed, separate media for that:

Instead of 'add to media pool', use 'split and add to media pool'. Resolve will prompt you for an EDL, and then uses the selected EDL to cut up all the r3d files 'virtually' in the media pool so you when you conform for grade they're not all linked together in the master sequence.

Thanks John that sounds good. Do you know if it works with FCP XML as well? Will have to give that a try.

Tried the trim R3D again and then brought in the original XML (aka the same XML used in Redcine) into Resolve 9 and it linked up to the new media once I had all the new media loaded into media pool. I guess I was trying to make it too complicated !!

Unless I'm misunderstanding, you can use XML, AAF or EDL to conform in Resolve 9, export trimmed R3Ds to a new folder and tell Resolve to re-conform from that new folder using newly exported trimmed R3D files. Done.
Oh yeah, if you want a new XML, Resolve does that too. Just select "Export XML".
Not sure why people insist on using RC-X. What if your timeline has some other types of files? What then?

Thanks, Jake.

I definitely would like to simplify my workflow and eliminate RCX from it altogether. Nothing against RCX, it's great, but I want simplicity.

I neglected to mention in my original post that the whole point of this is to be able to work from my 500GB internal SSD, which is much faster than using the external drives I usually receive my projects on.

So I just transfer the files to my internal SSD drive and grade from there, but it's impossible to do when you have 500-800GB worth of footage.

Not sure about CS5, but if you're in CS6 and cutting R3Ds it's super easy to gather your clips. Simply open (select) your sequence and then go to project manager. It'll give you the option to export selects or entire R3D clips from your edl to a discreet folder (in your resolve folder). Export the EDL as normal. Everything imports as normal from there. Pretty easy.

So is it possible to trim R3D's after grading and not lose one's grade? I was able to get it to work, but would rather not colortrace (too many versions).
