Hello, this is my first post here, I actually just made my account for this, while iv looked around for some time, I hadnt signed up believing that I needed to shoot red,
Though im sure its just fine for this post.
I saw someone share Jim's last post, and after reading it wanted to let him know from my heart how I feel.
Can I just start by saying that I hope this isn't annoying, or in the wrong place, or getting in anyones way, and if I get something wrong, im sorry.
You may want to skip to the end where I get to the point, but I wanted to back it up with some story that expresses my power for my message.
This is a really long story, and it's the first time I told anyone in the world this, but I felt I needed to let Jim know exactly how important he is.
My name is Jesse Crowley, I'm 19, I live in a small town near Sydney, Australia, and have just finished Highschool.
My life has been a very challenging, difficult, and complicated one.
My first memories are as a child, around 5-6, running around the house with my mum and dad, and my baby sister, from then on I don't remember much, for I have blocked it out.
When I was 6 or 7 we moved to a new house, shortly after, My mum kicked my dad out, and told him not to come back.
I ended up not seeing my dad for 5 years, forgetting what he looked like.
Meanwhile, I had just started school, and loved it, but at the same time hated it, I was constantly picked on. Every day, I never had friends and I never had anyone to play with.
I was the smart kid, I from a young age read books, watched documentaries about absolutely everything, and movies, I loved movies.
As I got older, I continued to be picked on, everyone else at school would be at the beach all day, or at each others house, while I was at home.
When I was 6 or 7 just after my dad left, I remember my mum getting sick, very sick. She was always at the doctors, and one day she was admitted to hospital.
When she got out I had to stay home most days to look after her, at 6 or 7 years old, and my then 3 or 4 year old sister, I don't remember a lot, the doctors say I've blocked out most of my life.
I vaguely remember taking my sister to her first day of school, scared that something would happen to mum in that 5 minute period.
I ended up staying home at one point for 8 months, resuscitating my mum 4 times in the period and having less than an hour sleep each night. I missed my year 6 farewell party.
I started high school, and found (when 4 schools merged into one for year 7-10) that I was unlikely to ever be popular, I was bashed and picked on for years.
Meanwhile, one Christmas, my dad came back into our life, it was brilliant, while he wasn't able to help much, I at least had another human in my life.
I don't remember high school from year 7-9 is, my most recent memory of it was when I walked into class one day in year 10, and had no idea who anyone was, at all.
I didn't realize I blocked out this whole period of my life. Almost on autopilot.
My next memory was my mum, I couldn't sleep, and came into the lounge room to find her, on the floor, gasping for air. I called the ambulance for what must have been the 50th time in my young life,
And watched them carry my lifeless mother off, I then had to go and wake up my little sister to tell her what happened, and we sat there waiting for our dad to come over.
Turns out her body was shutting down, we prepared to lose her, but after 6 months in the hospital she came home.
I was tired, very tired, I was about 15, Had not a single friend, and my mum was at home on life support basically, I had enough.
Just after completing year 10, and just after Christmas, I found myself sitting in my room, getting ready to kill myself, I just couldn't go on.
I looked back on my life and what a mess it was, I hated it, every part, I thought mum would die any day, and if I killed myself, my sister would go to my dad and her life would be better.
I was sitting at my computer, looking through ways to kill myself, when I noticed an add for some camera hire store, and I started wondering how much cameras cost.
I had always loved movies, they got me through the worst times, made my escape, made me but for a moment think I had friends and was happy.
Id always wanted to be apart of making movies, but never gave it much thought, because we are fairly poor from mums sickness, and dads work isnt the best.
So id never even looked in a store to see how much a digital camera costs, because what's the point.
Anyway, I ended up sitting at my computer by mums bed, for over 24 hours reading, watching videos and learning about cameras and movie making, I was stuck.
I sat there for days, Then mum got bad again and went back to the hospital, we were told to come say goodbye, I went to my room.
I started to cry, I had my laptop, found the way I was going to do it and got ready to, I started typing a goodbye note. But then, something steped in.
RED.
There was a video on your site that I had started to load to learn about what the big deal with the 4k thing was and red cameras, it had just at the right time started to load.
It played for a couple of seconds after spending 20 mins loading on our crap internet.
I looked for the tab that had the video so I could close it, but instead I watched, I believe it was the red one reel.
I fell asleep watching videos on your site and other red videos, and woke up to my sister telling me mum was doing better, and i looked over at my laptop and decided,
I'm going to make movies.
From that day I have done everything I could to learn, and work my way to getting a camera, and making movies (not as easy as i thought)
In 2010 my dad bought a $500 ish nikon dslr, I then started using it, constantly.
I always used manual, I made geto video rigs, and some aweful short films, but then I started getting told I was good.
I mainly put photos online, by now I had 3-5 friends, and made a facebook, they loved my photos, their friends loved my photos, and people started seeing who i was.
After a year or so, I had a group of friends, and at school, instead of being bashed and bullied people said hi to me, and things looked up.
Mum was still sick, dad was still away alot, but it got a little better.
I had made posters of red ones and then the epic and your lenses, everything red, all over my bedroom, I had frames from my favorite movies with all the camera info and exif that I could find all over my wall.
And I quickly knew more about cinema than my film and photography teacher in year 11, I even made a bet in late 2010 with my dad that
"in 3-4 years your going to see a thing called "4k tv" its 4x normal HD tv, Its going to be awesome."
I would even go see movies I wouldnt have liked, just because they were shot on RED.
I started to make a little money selling photos (like $200-$300 over a year) and my dad saved up and bought me a better camera, (it was crap, an obsolete nikon from like 2007)
But it was a start.
It didnt shoot video so I settled for photos, then starting to shoot time lapse as something better than nothing, and thought it was so cool I could shoot something and make it 4K !!
Sadly both my Nikons died, and still being a carer for my mum 24-7 (she's waiting for a double lung and heart transplant) I don't earn any money, I can't get a job.
So for now, and the for seeable future, I'm without a camera.
I recently saw my first 4K projection (tech is slow to adopt in Australia) and my first 4k display (though f*cking Sony was just showing upscale 1080 content)
I can not wait to see the future you have opened.
So tonight I sat here, Reading Jim's last post, and found myself at the end crying.
Here was the guy who I credit with saving my life, just as tired as I have been, when he should be atop a throne, with every movie go-er praising him for the next 1000 years.
This is a guy who changed the face of cinema, today, and into the future, Imagine 10 years from now how far back we would be without RED. ew 1080p.
Jim, I would just like to say to you, as personally as I can, Thank you. You saved my life, and probably my family.
I know I will never be able to express to you my thanks, or my feelings of gratitude, all I can say is Thank you. For everything you have done.
I promise to continue to annoy my dad and sister with the tech specs of the dragon and how awesome it is,
I promise to tell them at the start of every "shot on red" movie trailer "THIS WAS SHOT ON RED!
"
And most of all, This I don't know how, but I will make movies, either small online shorts, or a feature film, I hope I can make you proud you saved my life.
And if the day ever comes that I can Have a feature film, It shall be dedicated to you, with a 5 second " Thank you, Jim Jannard."
Thank you.
(I thought I would post the first photo I took, And a couple others to give you something to look at, hopefully you didn't waste your time reading that)
First time I got to use a flash
If you managed to read this, thank you
Though im sure its just fine for this post.
