Been thinking about the Dragon sensor all night, specifically how to get this camera in the hands of people shooting projects.
RED proabably has this already locked down for highlight projects, what about the mainstream TV and commercial work? Indy features, student projects?
How many rental houses have Dragon sensors in Los Angeles?

I know Phil Holland has one and he's been working like a madman!
Looks like Evin Grant too.

It's been an interesting release from my perspective. The buzz out here started as a low hum likely due to the wait, but once some footage arrived around mid/late December it was a very audible rattle. Since the prototype testing I've been getting fairly regular calls, emails, and PMs about Dragon.

Evin just got his Dragon and he literally went straight to work on shooting a piece. He posted a few images. Peter I think is all wrapped on his last film shot on Dragon and haven't heard much after that, though he deserves a break :)

There's certainly a few Epic Dragons out here now and they have been in demand at rental houses and rental houses have been trying to get their MXs upgraded for sure. Don't know exactly how many have landed where, but I do know they are in demand because I've received calls for mine because other Dragons were out working. I know a few higher end commercials that have been shot this month on them. I've been to and from Red Studios Hollywood a few times while Gone Girl has been filming, which has been informative from my passing observations. Don't know of any mainstream broadcast/episodic work being done with them yet (weird time of the year really for that to happen), but I know there's been more interest using them on large features as I've shown the cameras to a couple folks shooting big monsters this year and next year. They have been and will be used on Game of Thrones, which is rad and fitting though not the main camera as their pipeline is already well in motion.

The new side of this to me is I'm renting out my gear without me, which is different than how I've been running "my game" for the last few years. A couple of trusted folks have used my cameras on gigs now. I did turn down an Indy because it was far to sketchy, but I'm open to whatever as long as it makes sense. The rental side of this has been a learning experience, especially in such a saturated market like Los Angeles. More or less though it's actually been rather nice because people know I have the Dragon and I can facilitate most of their needs or answer any questions they have regarding the whole Red system.

I'm primarily a shooter though and I do wonder what will happen if I land a month or two long rental without a camera body, but I haven't had that happen just yet. Though I just submitted a bid for a job that does exactly that. My "OG" plan was to pick up two Dragons, but I need to pace myself. I geared up crazy hard in the last few months and see where this takes me, now much of my moolah is set to beef up my post side a bit. At the moment I'm shooting a small piece that I'll share soon. Should have it visible by February on something "new". I am shooting a feature this year, but it got pushed twice in the last month, so I'm stir crazy right now. Should have some of my normal VFX related shoots coming in fairly soon as I've heard whispers in the walls.

That's all happening while trying to get a couple projects off the ground on my own. Pitch meetings out here are adventures themselves. I have two lined up for February. Hoping one of these properties gets picked up and we can get going on it sooner than later.

It's a real hustle out here.

I'd say with much confidence most if not all of my professional work this year will be shot on Dragon.

In terms of how to get the Dragons into the hands of people shooting various projects? They just have to ask :)

is there any truth to this rumour i have heard, that, the "MAN OF STEEL" sequel featuring Ben affleck as "BATMAN", directed by Zack Snyder will be shot on Dragons. It will begin production in detroit sometime in february.......
 
I think getting it into houses asap makes the most sense for getting a lot of people to use it, but surely that will happen naturally since houses will want it now enough to go for carbons? I'm not sure how many places in ny or la are currently renting to the public. I see owner ops on here mostly, and one rental outfit not in my area had it i know, but things seem to be changing on a day to day basis. It'd be cool to see some rental houses promoting they got it, I haven't seen that outside of the PM I got on here..

Digital Film Studios has two dragons available for rental.
my wife and I recently directed a music video that we used both of them on. I will have some images to post soon.
 
I got my Carbon Fiber DRAGON in early January and it went out on a Chevrolet Superbowl commercial for 2 weeks, then out for a 1 day job :)
It's been making money and making the clients happy for sure :)

No, the movie is shooting on 35mm film, which is the preference for Snyder and DP Larry Fong. It's not being released until May of 2016, so they have a long time to shoot it and handle all the post work.

I don't think the choice of camera will one make iota of difference in the way it looks, how good the movie is, or how well it does at the box office. I also think more and more, cinematographers are losing the ability to demand a certain camera because producers and directors sometimes insist on certain format for other reasons (including cost and personal preference). This is particularly true in television.
 
I have a small Dragon package for rent in San Francisco, though renting quite a bit to LA lately (and willing to rent anywhere). Usually sub-renting out to DP's and crew who I know who want the dragon instead of scarlet/epic or as 2nd/3rd camera.

It is the RED DSMC shoulder pad with chrosziel 15mm grips on the front. Its a good setup because the whole rig slips on a tripod dovetail and when you need to go handheld just pop the camera off its ready to go. Very ergonomic, Balanced, and keeps the lens a little lower than other rigs as well.
