  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DROBO....

Its funny, I have had a drobo for non critical (mainly media straming stuff) usage for a little over a year and had no problems. Then I read this thread and since then I've had a ton of outages where the drobo is on but is not accessible at all. I blame it on you guys!

Had great success with Promise Pegasus 6 bay so far, Thunderbolt rocks and tried each RAID config it allows, smooth operation all around. The expansion possibilities roped me in, SSD drive compatible and upwards of 18TB in near future.

If RED started mass storage I'd never look back though.

One the topic of Thunderbolt, saw a video shot overseas of Thunderbolt RED Rocket, as a primarily MBP editor can't help myself to ask: any loose timeframe?

That thing does look awesome! I'm waiting to see what G-Tech offers in terms of Thunderbolt before I think about buying one though.

There are PCI-E extender units that should be on the market pretty soon - Magma and Sonnet had theirs on display at the Intel Developer Forum recently. Apparently Sonnet's is shipping this fall.
 
I'm glad I came across this thread! Im at the point where i have 4+ TB of video data that needs to be backed up, and I haven't really enjoyed my experiences with DROBO's for clients. I am planning a move so getting a pelican case and backing up everything will be crucial!
 
Never understood why everyone loved the Drobo's.

I have a DS1511+ with 2 DX510 expansions for a total of 30TB of storage. I accidently unplugged the array from the UPS thinking it was my PC....Ha. I remember feeling bummed because the Array would take a week to rebuild. If only that were true. The array came back up asking to initialize all disks. Everything disappeared. I'm still dealing with the trouble ticket. Moral of the story...I needed a backup for my backup.
 
Absolutely you need a backup for your backup. That's pretty much the case with anything. The key for me is how easy can you make that backup process, how fool-proof is it and and frequently can you backup. The thing I like is how I can automate the DiskStations to do that and they just get on with the task and email me when they're done.

I've heard a few other suggestions, but what's another good RAID storage system brand that's also a good deal (not crazy expensive)?
