Tell me please How import R3D files into new Final Cut Pro X?
Is it directly? or via RedCine X? What is the best way?

Thank you

Read the white paper that is with the FCP docs that RED has on their site.....it tells you how to make a prores wrapper of the R3d's.....very easy to do when you have that paper....i cannot recall from pure memory, but the steps are very simple as in 1,2,3.....

All support for formats, other than QT has to be written by the manufacturers, like Red. So, until Red decides to do so, there is no direct R3D support in FCPX.

What I have done successfully is do a one-light in RCX and then output ProRes. Even at 4K that will come into FCPX. Edit with the ProRes. Right now, to my knowledge, there is no way (yet) to bring R3Ds into FCPX... or to reconnect them after the edit. If anyone has done either of these, I'd love to know about it!!

Don't think that will help with FCPX, will it?

There isn't an SDK for FCPX for us to implement R3D support directly into FCPX.

Terry, if you edit with prores files in FCP-X and use After Effects I wrote an applescript that will let you reconnect to R3Ds and bring the whole project in After Effects for FX/finish. you can check out a demo video of my script 'foolcut_AE' on vimeo : http://vimeo.com/28681222

When REDCINE-X PRO lua scripting will allow import of clips on a multi-tracks timeline I'll look into writing an FCP-X to REDCINE-X PRO convert tool.

RED One QT Proxy files do import in FCP-X (and can also be sent to AE) but I'm not really sure it is the best way to edit RED clips in FCP-X...

I have tested the method above with 4.5k material from the RED m or MX sensor, but I have not tested it with EPIC footage.

It works very well. It will even lef you grade in Apple Color.

One thing you could do is one light 4k 4444 red material and export as redgamma 2 redlogfilm. Then import the material into FCP x edit proxy material and then turn off proxy editing and render whatever format you want from the 4k

That is pretty much how you'd interface with Slexa material or SONY F65 4k material.

Thanks David... and yes my script works well with Epic footage too in 5K ('offline' prores of any size in FCPX then AE R3D in 5K).
To grade FCPX RED project in Color you mean you went to AE with foolcut_AE then to Premiere then to an FCP XML into Clipfinder and finally into Color ? I'm sure it works but it is quite a convoluted path !

That is exactly the path.

FCP x to ae
Ae to premier
Premier XML to Clipfinder
Clipfinder fcp7 XML to FCP 7
FCP 7 to send to color.

It actually works perfectly (on the five clip limit)
But that actually means it should easily work in other CC software as well.

So.....If manufacturers are supposed to write their own utility because Apple havn't or cant and theres no SDK.............Is it likely to happen if so how and when ?

Dave,

It's common fir manufactures to write their own compatibility. That is the point of the SDK.

For example, using the RED SDK, many software developers, adobe, apple, Davinci, Baselight, Pablo, Flame, Fire, inferno, Smoke. All had to write r3d support into their software to use R3D.

Apple has released an SDK for camera manufacturers to incorporate their camera formats into FCP X

Well thats good if Apple have provided an SDK then, but I thought Deannan had said on page one of this tread :-

I think the divergence occurs between Apple's idea of "Camera Plugins" and RED/Everyone else's expectations of "Native".

I haven't looked at the Camera Import SDK (Not a Dev) so I can't say for sure, but to me the information available reads as the standard "Import everything into ProRes", like the various Canon DSLR import plugins for FCP7. Which is not the "Edit Natively" that everyone else is looking for. I could be wrong, though.

The easiest way to figure it out would be for someone to download the new XDCAM plugin and look at what it's doing. If all it's doing is *import* (In other words, transcoding everything to ProRes) than I'm guessing RED's not gonna bother.

Ben - I don't think that's what is happening right now. If I bring Canon h.264 footage into FCPX and don't choose to make "optimized media" or "proxy media" I can still edit with the native files. I am not sure what the disconnect is on the SDK but there does seem to be one - maybe it's coming but just not there yet?

I think this while native thing is over rated.

Treat RED like film.

No one ever cut film natively until the neg cut. It's the same here. Just color time the digital jeg cut and edit dallies.

Optimized or proxy media is dailies.

The RED system was never really built to he optimized for full Rez real time. You need hardware power or gpu trickery to do that.

It's still best to edit dallies "offline" and finish films "online". This goes for premier too. I'd still rather edit proxy media or rallies than my originals.

The perfect FCP x plugin would allow me to edit at 1/8 Rez and switch on the r3d to access all the tools like iso, lift gamma gain wb, etc. for a grade before I output.

And that's only for jobs that I don't take to a dedicated coloring system.

David.
