  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How do I hook up an External HDMI Monitor to the Scarlet ??

George, how is everything with your Monitor situation? Care to send a quick phone picture of what you're seeing or you gonna wait and give RED a quick call tomorrow to have them walk you through it?

Wow, you are something Patrick. Here it is only 5:00AM my time, and you are up and ready to help me already.

It's a little too early for me to get into it yet, but later I'm going to try yet another monitor and screw with the settings some more. I'll let you know then, if you want me to.

May I ask you this, does changing the "frequency" effect the camera itself any? In other words, I certainly don't want to change things where the camera will not "function" properly because I messed with the frequency it is supposed to be running with.

Thanks again and again for all you help and kindness.

George

Hehehe. I'm in Germany so it's 14.00 over here. I have a slow Sunday today and I just saw your post and checked on you :)

You can't mess anything up with the Hz / frequency settings. If you ever feel your camera is all messed up you always have the option to reset to factory settings. Just make sure to save your presets, looks and calibration files, if you have any, to a SSD before resetting the camera.

What I would do is hook the monitor up, and change the HDMI frequency settings while the monitor is on and see if anything changes. Wait in between the changes. It sometimes takes the monitor a while to "see" there have been changes in signal.

I did a video to remember my settings.

Might be useful. I did have restart once I got the settings. In the second video I move the menus to the LCD. I had two but one would work.

Hi Alonzo,

Thanks for your video. It did help. I'm anxious to try those settings and see what happens.

May I ask you about your Ikam? What model is it? Where did you get it? How much did it cost ?

Thanks,

George

What firmware are you on, George?

It should be on the latest Patrick.

I bought the camera used, and so it just went through Red's diagnostic check with a few minor repairs, and the Ownership Transfer. They told me they always upgrade and install the latest firmware when they do that. I think it's v4.1

Why?

Bob said it :)

I'm sorry, but I don't see it under System Status. I'm looking right at it. Everything else is there, but not Firmware. ???

BTW - I finally got an external HD monitor to work. Yesterday, it must have been either the monitor I was using or the cable. This time, I used a different monitor and a different cable.

Now, I have to figure a way to get my little 7" cheapy on-camera monitor to work.

Go Settings/Maintenance/System Info/ there it reads "Version: x.x.x" that's the firmware version

I was just wondering about firmware because the video showed a 3.x firmware if I'm not mistaken (didn't fully look at it) and a lot has happened since then. But it's good to hear that you have one monitor going. :)

Well, everybody!

I'm absolutely flabbergasted, but it's ALL working this morning. Don't ask me how, but it is. I have no idea what I did, or why it's working, but it is.

Not only does the large PC HD monitor work, but so does the little cheapy 7" HD monitor I have. In fact, unlike when I used it on the Red-One, the little monitor actually even shows all the settings and camera info. It's great. Just what I wanted.

Now, that I've got that stuff solved, I need to start a new thread about the SSD Side Module.

Thanks for everyone's help. You guys are the best, and I'm MOST grateful. I don't know what I'd do without nice people like you, who are willing to help those of us that are not up on all this digital technology like we should be. I've been shooting film for over 40 years, but digital is still new to me and it's going to take awhile for me to really learn it so that I'm as comfortable as I was with film cameras.

Take care,

George

Hi George,

Meant to get back sooner. Glad you got it working. It was the same way with me. Suddenly it started working but I'm sure restarting had a lot to do with it, once I got the setting correct. Also, much kudos to your decades of experience in film. Wow. I got my RED last year when it came out and also new to pro camera work so you have a lot of me. I generally am from a animation background.

So to answer your questions. I'm using an Ikan V5600. I paid a lot for it. Probably about $700. I got it when I first got my Canon7D. I was just learning HD video a few years ago. More than likely I got it from B&H Photo. I had been getting most of my stuff from them, even Cranes and SteadyCam. I'm only now starting to get 3rd party stuff. I probably would go with something much cheaper like a Lilliput.

Continued Success.

Hi Alonzo,

Thanks for the compliment. Yes, I have been in "the business" for a long time and have worked on many Hollywood feature films, but my greatest love was, and is, wildlife cinematography. Nothing satisfies me like that does.

I have been using a cheapy 7" monitor. I've had it for awhile and can't even find a brand name on it. I think it's a Lilliput, but not sure. Anyway, it cost me about $150.oo and works fine, but just for framing while shooting in the field. It does have an HDMI connection and works even better on our Scarlet than it did on our Red-One. I'm also using the Original Red EVF for focus and menu controls, and it works great.

Since we are a VERY small production company, consisting of just two people, we MUST keep our expenses down, or we won't survive.

Thanks again for your help.

Be good,

George
